“Don't get some of the reviews”
Reviewed 15 January 2014

Stayed at this hotel for 3 nights with my wife and 2 teenagers for twixmas on our way home from Christmas in the highlands.Found the staff helpful and polite from the moment we arrived. The rooms were large, spotlessly clean, tastefully set out and well equipped. In regard to the negative comments about breakfast I struggle to see a problem ... 4kinds of cereal ,cold meats, cheese, fresh fruit, croissants and then the choice of 3 different cooked breakfast. The only thing we had to bring to the attention of the staff was that one of the light bulbs was flickering in the bathroom,we went back to our room and as we went to shut the door David (the manager) was there with a new light bulb. The hotel is just a short stroll from all that the city has to offer. We all loved the hotel and Edinburgh.

We are are going back next year!

Dear Trevor J,

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a very detailed review of our hotel after your stay in December. I was very pleased to read that you and your family enjoyed your 3 day break with us over Christmas and that our team was able to make your stay a very pleasant one. I do think we offer value for money on the many options you listed as part of our breakfast and I am very glad you enjoyed it.

Hopefully we can welcome you and your family back in the near future.

Kind regards,

David Clancy

Do not expect to much from the Edinburgh City Hotel. It is average with nice rooms.
The exterior is not very impressive. By arrival we were told our room was not ready, so we decided to go out and explore. What I found was a big let down was that there was not a refrigerator in the room and that the water smelled of chlorine. The staff is friendly, but does not do anything extra to make your stay more special.

The room itself was nice, beds were clean and the television works fine. Also the shower is one of the best I have seen. Water temperature was regulated very nicely.
Breakfast was a bit expensive for my taste so expect to eat out for breakfast (a fridge would have been handy)
The tea they offered was not very special, and the biscuits were stale, but all the more reason to go the Sellfridges around the corner!

Tip: do not take a taxi because they are HUGELY OVERPRICED, bus 100 takes you to Lauriston road, which is just a 10 min walk to the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street, for the street was quite busy. I was glad I brought my earplugg...

Dear M S,

Thank you for reviewing our hotel after your stay this month. I was pleased to read that you enjoyed your room but naturally disappointed we weren’t able to exceed your expectations in other areas. I think it is always essential that we do our best to manage the expectations of our guests and as such we do not advertise that we have fridges in any of our rooms (we can however offer these on request subject to availability). Additionally we are clear in advertising the history of our hotel: this building was the original Simpson’s Maternity Hospital opened in 1879 and as such the exterior is preserved as a category B listed building. I appreciate that it is a matter of opinion that you did not find this very impressive but I think it offers our hotel character and, more importantly, all interior areas of our hotel are of a modern spec with the whole hotel being renovated within the last 4 years.

I think I should also point out that TripAdvisor is used by millions of travellers who look for knowledgeable advice and tips from other users to base their travel decisions on, so it is key for you to be accurate with details. The number 100 does not stop on Lauriston Road. In fact, there is no Lauriston Road in Edinburgh. Our hotel is on Lauriston Place and the number 35 bus can take potential guests straight from the airport to our hotel for £1.50 single but it does take approximately 70 minutes. The number 100 is the direct airlink bus (30 minutes travel time with an open return ticket priced at £7.00) but travellers would have to alight on Princes Street and then walk down Lothian Road for approximately 10 minutes to make their way to our hotel. With regards to taxi prices in the city: my experience in comparison to other UK cities is that Edinburgh is average in pricing.

Thank you for your feedback and I hope you did enjoy your trip to Edinburgh.

Kind regards,

David Clancy

Myself and my partner recently stayed at the city hotel due to a family wedding not far from the hotel. On arrival the hotel wasn't too impressive but after checking in and getting to our room we began to relax from a long journey and found the hotel very comfortable. Staff very very friendly although we found the person that greeted us to be a little abrupt. We would stay agin should we return to the area.

Me and my girlfriend stayed for four nights on the first floor. THE GOOD: The hotel is in a great location. It's a short walk to the Edinburgh Castle area. Our room was clean on arrival and housekeeping maintained this daily. We could easily control the heating in the room. Some staff members were particularly nice and helpful but a few seemed consistently abrupt (perhaps from being too busy). The manager (we think) was particularly nice and accommodating, and for that we wish we could give the hotel five stars. THE BAD: Stay away from breakfast. We prepaid breakfast for all four days but only ended up eating it twice. It's not awful but it's pretty low quality. They serve a "buffet" which consists of little more than a tiny round table in the centre of the room carrying various unimpressive dishes. It was all stuff you could throw together at home without much effort. You can also order cooked breakfast which is equally unimpressive. They bring out a tray of toast which looks like toast you can make at home. It looked a little burned each time as well. In short, the breakfast is a little corny and cheap. The servers seemed a bit overworked on top of this. Regardless, they tried and we appreciated it.
One last note, with all the talk of ghosts in the town, admittedly, we felt a little spooked at times. On two consecutive nights we heard something fall in the corner of our room and it freaked us both out. The first time, it sounded like a coat falling to the ground. The next night, it sounded like a light pounding on the floor (twice). There was absolutely nothing that could have fallen to make that noise. The only explanation I have is the heating system. The heater does make some noise and undoubtedly affects the wall it is attached to. However, it was hard to imagine the heater making those particular noises. We're not ones to believe in ghosts but it was a little unsettling after coming from the "haunted" south vault tour.
Conclusion: We might stay there again for the price and the generally friendly staff. We'd avoid breakfast and hopefully find a room that didn't make strange, random noises in the middle of the night.

Room Tip: 216 was the room making the creepy noises.

We stayed here for one night in December. The hotel room was lovely and warm, very clean and very comfortable. The bathroom was spotless and there was plenty of hot water for showers. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast the next morning was spot on. The location is great too as we were only 10 mins walk from Princes Street. All in all a great stay, would definitely go back!

We have just returned home after a fantastic Christmas stay at this hotel, From the great welcome to all the staff including Bar and restaurant which were very nice people. We had three breakfast and a Christmas dinner all which were served hot and tasty by Zaneta, Who was the best restaurant waitress that we have ever had!

The room was clean and fresh and kept very tidy. I am a registered blind traveller and felt very safe at this hotel.

On our next trip to Edinburgh we will be staying here again.

Only stayed the one night for a short lesiure break and was very impressed by this hotel. Room (407) was very large with a queen bed and coffee/tea Making facilities, no problems with the cleanliness. Breakfast was superb with a wide range of choices. Although situated on a fairly busy road we didnt experience any traffic noise at all. Good situation for most tourist hot spots either on a short bus ride or walk.
