“Wonderful stay at this hotel!!”
Reviewed 28 March 2014

My boyfriend and I stayed for two nights at the Edinburgh City Hotel and it was a brilliant experience!!

Upon arriving at the hotel we were greeted by lovely friendly staff. We checked in quickly and easily and went straight to our room. The room was immaculate. We were on the top floor which was quiet and the bed was really comfortable. Décor was very smart with dark wooden furniture.
Bathroom was super clean!

The breakfast was delicious! We had a cooked Scottish breakfast which was superb and freshly cooked to order. The haggis is a must to at least try as it was lovely!

The staff at this hotel were brilliant and couldn't do enough for us! So helpful and welcoming.

The location of this hotel was perfect- we walked everywhere! No need for buses. Lots of lovely restaurants and boutiques just up the road and all major attractions within walking distance.

We had a really great time here and would 100% stay here again!

Dear Katie E,

Thank you for the glowing review and for your choice of title. It seems as though you enjoyed every aspect of your stay and in particular the helpfulness of our team, the delicious breakfast you had each morning and how handy our location was for reaching all the key sites in Edinburgh quickly and easily. Most importantly, it was great to read that you and your boyfriend enjoyed yourselves so much that you would book with us again if you returned to Edinburgh. That is always our aim with each guest and it is nice to know we achieved that with your stay.

Kind regards,

David Clancy

My husband booked a few days away as a surprise for me as an early birthday , knowing I love Edinburgh, and the Edinburgh City Hotel . I was delighted to find out I was returning to this little Hotel of a gem , having stayed I'm many bigger hotels in Edinburgh. The staff from the receptionist to the breakfast team etc are fantastic , what was lovely is how they remember you having been before , when you can only imagine how many people must come through the door. They remember which room we liked to even the chocolates , which may I say I love , so it was lovely to see when we booked in again that I was given the room I love and to see some chocolates on the bed with a card thanking us for returning again . We will certainly be returning again , and Thanks again for a lovely stay , lovely food and lovely hospitality . Well done David Clancy your staff are a credit . See you soon x

Room Tip: Ask for a room off the main road as this can be a little busy

Dear Shirl12,

Thank you for taking time to review our hotel, but more importantly thank you for choosing to stay with us each time you visit Edinburgh. It makes our job more fun when we can welcome back regular guests and try and remember the little things they enjoyed most about their previous stay…such as a particular room or the chocolates in our superior package.

We all look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel again in the future.

Kind regards,

My husband and I booked the Edinburgh City Hotel for Bed and breakfast for 6days and was delighted with everything in the Hotel. We have tried bus tours with various travel agents (which were ALL a disaster due to very poor hotels). For us this is a big part of ones holiday. I did a lot of research on the Internet and we decided on the said hotel. From cleaners, waitresses, reception staff and the manager we could not fault anyone or anything. It appears to be a "Family" run hotel (which it isnt) Nothing was any bother at all and information on anything was there for you. I am not surprised that the hotel was fully booked with all different nationalities. Near bus stops and only downside for us (as my husband has health issues) was the fact it was a bit hilly. Would not be a problem for healthy individuals. As I repeat it is an absolute gem to visit. Dont think we could find anything better. I believe it should be a 4 star.

Room Tip: We were in room 201 Bit noisy with traffic but reception staff would advise you.

Our family gave us a gift of flights to Edinburgh and 3 night stay in this hotel for our Wedding Anniversary. Taxi from airport 20/30 mins depending on traffic -£20.00. No 35 bus passes hotel but takes a while to get there -£1.50. We were greeted by friednly/helpful receptionist on our arrival and were booked in with minimum fuss and in our room 5 mins later. We were rather surprised that we had been give a 'disabled room' as the booking had been made 4 months earlier. We did ask later that night if there was another room available but were told that hotel was full. Lighting in room did not encourage reading ! Not all TV stations worked, we asked twice if this could be fixed but we gave up in the end. Hairdryer only operated on cold air. The bathroom/wet room had a 'dip'in the floor and one tended to forget about it and stumble on entry. We had view of the recycling bins from our window, and the 7.30 am pick didn't aid beauty sleep. I am only 5' 3" so the bed was fine for me, but my husband had his feet hanging out of the end of the bed each night. There is no air conditioning so I don't know how you would cope if there was a heat wave . Room was small and quite dark and as mention lighting was not adequate for reading etc.The food at breakfast was good, although apart from toast there was no other bread. On our second day there must have been a meltdown in the kitchen as we had a 35 min wait ( maybe you shouldn't have that large clock in the restaurant !) On our last morning we had a 25 min wait. The staff were very friendly, hotel was clean, but we were disappointed with our room, it looked nothing like the hotels profile pictures. So request room in advance, we were on the ground floor, rooms 101-103 appear to be 'disabled' rooms.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel could be noisy as it is a busy street. Rooms 101-103 appear to be...

stayed with my wife for 4 nights in March, you get what you pay for, a basic but clean and tidy hotel, accessible for trips into town on the local bus ( Edinburgh ) both the old town and the new, costs £1.50 for each trip , better to buy a day pass for the whole day , can be used on any bus, we used them to to go into town , out to the zoo , Holyrood House, and all around Edinburgh, ocean terminal NOT worth a visit, the Museums are excellent and free, go to the Zoo to see the Pandas, lovely,

Very good staff. Friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is in an old hospital and is in a great location. Just about all the interesting restaurants are within a short walk.

The bathroom was nicely renovated and the room itself had so many electrical outlets - clearly, they were thinking about modern guests. The only reason they get a 4 and not 5 is that I would have preferred a firmer bed.

The breakfast was very good with three interesting and hearty choices. The coffee machine was down in the beginning of the week, but they fixed it the next day. (I drank tea anyway).

My fiancé booked me a trip to Edinburgh for my birthday, we booked this hotel not knowing much about Edinburgh, We decided to walk from the station to the hotel (bad idea) eventually after getting lost and tired of hills and stairs we got a taxi (best option!)

We arrived at the hotel, staff were very helpful. They had a lift which was handy so we didn't have to carry the bags up stairs! The room was bright and modern, it was spotless so no complaints!

It would have got 5 stars but it was a bit out of the way for people who don't know their way about, had to get taxi's everywhere.

I would recommend staying here though, good value for money and lovely rooms!
