“Pleasant experience and near the airport”
Reviewed 3 September 2012

I had an early flight and this hotel proved spot on for location, cleanliness, and amenities. The staff were friendly and professional. The breakfast was huge and lots of choices! I'll stay here next time around!

We recently stayed here for 3 nights and must say the quality of the room was very good, lovely and spacious. The buffet breakfast was very good as was the leisure club.

we had reservations about booking the hotel at fist due to the location outside of Edinburgh, however, there is a bus, the air link 100, which stops right outside the hotel every ten minutes and takes you into waverly station in around 20 minutes for not much more than £1

would definatley stay here again.

We have used this Hotel twice now when we are flying from Edinburgh Airport as the hotel offers parking and Airport transfare. The hotel has a nice pool sauna and gym so you can relax and begin your holiday from the moment you arrive. The rooms are well equiped and include the wonderfull Marriott beds.

My grief with this hotel is really a broader complaint about mid-quality chain hotels, but this place is as bad as any of them. For one, they offer no free wi-fi in the room or lobby -- the only hotel I stayed at during my 10 day trip not to offer free internet anywhere in the hotel. (Of course, you're welcome to pay for wi-fi at the "bargain" rate of ₤16/day.) Not even the business center computers had free internet. This seems willfully behind the times. Second, the proximity to the airport is undone by the fact that they don't have an airport shuttle. Why else would you stay here if not for the convenience to the airport? Well, they're not interested in helping you with that. Next, despite reserving a room for two, our room had only one king sized bed. They made a halfhearted offer to bring us a cot, and we never heard about it again. Oh also, we tried to eat outside food in the lobby, but were shooed away.

Now the grandest insult was that they charged ₤1/min for local calls from the room. Let me repeat that: ONE POUND PER MINUTE FOR LOCAL CALLS! We were shocked to discover this on the bill, and I expressed my frustration when I checked out. I had only raised my voice slightly when they brought the reinforcement staff to the front desk, and a manager tried to placate us with some story about an airline that tried to rip off its customers. I paid and left fuming.

I've had similar experiences in hotels like this before -- nickel and dime charges for basic amenities that are complimentary in lower quality hotels. Their business model is not for the cost-conscious, and they work to serve only those whom they know will spend freely (predominantly business travelers with expense accounts). They can dress things up with pretty vases and nice pillows, but in reality they only aim to provide the worst experience they think you'll pay for again, ripping you off at every turn. I'll be avoiding cheapskate hotel chains like this in the future, and I encourage you to do so as well.

Location - Outside of the city but better for it.
Large private car park five minutes walk and two minutes drive to a small retail park for the little essentials.
on an express bus route between the city centre and the airport - every 6 minutes or so for 20 hours every day - clean, cheap and reliable - £1.40 into the city for a 25 minute journey - takes lots longer in a car due to the bus having dedicated bus lanes and the parking charges in the city are very high.

Rooms - spacious, quiet and have everything you'd expect; hair-dryer, fridge, safe, iron and ironing board, sat TV, etc.

Restaurant - doubles ad the breakfast room and you can tell - not very charismatic but adequate, food quite pricey and a little bland.

Bar - food far more interesting and better priced but can get a little noisy later in the evening

Gym/pool/spa - well equipped and well managed with a knowledgeable team.

Service - everyone was friendly, efficient and helpful can't fault any member of staff - in fact some are well above the standard you would normally expect to find in chains such as the Marriot - well done.

Negatives - if I was forced to find anything wrong I would say that as we were there during the tattoo there were four coaches arriving each day for an overnight stay - we only ever saw the tour groups at breakfast which was made extremely busy but...we were on holiday and it only took 3 or 4 minutes to get a table each day - not a big deal.

City tips -
Castle, not great as it's very commercial and not what you may expect - good views though
Camera Obscura (just outside the castle) fantastic - a fun way to spend 90 minutes
Edinburgh dungeons - save your money and time this is dire!
Tattoo - a must (and us the 100 bus service) - don't worry about where you are seated as everyone gets a good view - but wrap up warm

Room Tip: the south wing got some noise from a nearby rail track - but not enough to bother us
