“bearable but expensive and flawed”
Reviewed 15 March 2009

For someone wanting a hotel fairly near Edinburgh's airport, this is not a terrible choice but it was very expensive (£195 per night excluding breakfast) and not worth it. The room smelt grubby until the not so clean windows were opened. The bathroom was ok but there was ingrained dirt in crevices around the lavatory seat, which one might not generally associate with Marriott. The bed was clean but no where near supportive enough. The aesthetics were pretty awful. Once inside the room, the hotel was quiet, although one can hear other guests' doors slamming shut.

Stayed from 6 - 2 Feb 2009 for the opening 6 Nations Match.

Hotel is of high standard with excellent facilities. Breakfast is amazing !! The rooms are extremely spacious and very clean. I feel that the hotel is more suited for business guests who require a quick stop over as it is a fair distance from Princes Street etc.

Overall a good hotel for a very reasonable price.

Snow snow everywhere and we stayed here for the night. The reservation, check in was good, room was clean, large and had a great bed.
The restaurant- was greated by a loud, over familiar girl who insisted on asking personal questions at the top of her voice and then pushed us to order a merlot as she would get points! Ordered Sav Blanc ha! Steak, crap, corn fed chicken, crap, chips, crap and thats what we didn't send back. Veg was auful, they did remove this from the bill. Before we even got served our mains the whole restaurant was stripped and set for breakfast around about 20 diners. A pet hate of mine. Loud girl proceeded to go around the tables telling all she was heading home now. Found out she didn't even work in the restaurant, she worked in the bar!
Check out fine.

Stayed here with my family (children 15 and 12) for a long weekend break in a family room, two king sized bed and a foldaway. Very close to the airport (short inexpensive journey) on one of the main roads into Edinburgh. No traffic noise. Staff were very good and the breakfast was as expected, good with a wide choice. The room was good, although there was a slight damp smell near the bathroom and the room window was small, making the room dark. The hotel is in need of some modernisation as the corridors and breakfast / dining room have a 1980s feel. Used the pool area which was fine, although the changing room is small with little seating (bring a pound coin for the lockers)

My main concern was the location. Normally we stay in the centre of Edinburgh but on this occasion we were unable to book a family room elsewhere. I found this hotel's location too far out from the city centre, meaning that we had to take buses on a constant basis (approximately a 25 minute journey). Taxis from the hotel to the centre were too expensive for frequent use. This would be an excellent location if you wanted somewhere close to the airport and indeed it is used by airline staff, but if you want a shopping / site seeing trip stay in a more central location.

The Marriott is okay in terms of bedding and shower, but you can't find some facilities like sauna (which makes me have a better sleep.) It was slight damp but not severe. The value is quite nice as it is much cheaper than hotels in the city center.

If you are going to book this hotel beware of the location. There were buses but are few especially on holidays. You can take other buses to the Gyle Center and take a 5-min walk to the hotel, but it is really dark outside. For those easily get dizzy when taking a bus, avoid this one since it takes a 20-min bus ride to the city center.

Stayed at the Marriot in Edinburgh (room 330) for a couple of nights on business. You just can't fault the Marriot for comfort - the bed was wonderful with loads of comfy pillows and clean crisp white linen. Bathroom was slightly more compact than I have experienced in other Marriot hotels. Although by a main road it was faily quiet at night. I had breakfast in my room which was delivered on time and with a smile. The hotel is situated a short taxi ride from the airport and within a ten minute walk to The Gyle Shopping Centre which has M&S, Morrisions and a small selection of high street stores. I would have no hesitation in staying at this hotel again. There is also a pool and a spa but I didn't try either to give an opinion.

My wife and I stayed at the Edinburgh Marriott for a two night weekend break - a package involving breakfast and dinner on the first (Fri) night.

It's a very comfortable hotel. The room was first rate with better than average space (a sofa and desk/chair) and a very comfortable King bed. Immaculately clean and no signs of tiredness in the decor. Dinner on the first night was excellent, food of high quality and a good choice of wines; a pity that the restaurant was so quiet, but the staff were very attentive and the service faultless. Great staff overall; affable without being subservient.

My only complaint about the place was the ridiculously high charge for wireless internet. They wanted £15 per hour to connect, which I think is outagageous. We had recently been touring Tennessee and in every hotel we stayed in (five in total, including a Marriott) the wireless internet was free of charge. Rip off Britain again?

  • Disliked — Cost of Internet connection
