Description: email: ruthshannon123@btinternet.com, tel: 0131 453 4343 We came across this really lovely tea shop on Sunday afternoon - did not expect to find anywhere like this in Juniper Green! The cakes were out of this world - delicious scones, lovely chocolate cake. The tea was beautifully served - not tea bags but leaf tea in a pot with a strainer and pretty cups. Daughter had a bacon, brie and cranberry toastie and rated it very highly indeed. Ruth was very friendly and helpful - even gave me the recipe for the scones! The other people in the cafe were also most enthusiastic about the cakes they had had. Definitely recommended. Their card says "specializing in home baking, freshly prepared lunches, specialized theme evenings (we saw a sign for an Indian evening), outside catering for any event".

Ruth's scones and cakes are the best we have ever had!
Every time we come to Edinburgh from Milan - and it happens 2 or 3 times a year - we never miss to visit Ruth's café to taste these specialities (scones, chocolate fudge and courgette cakes are really delicious).
Therefore this week we have been very disappointed to find the café closed, as we were longing to pop into it during our walk along the Leith river.
We really hope to find it open again next time we come!

This cafe is shut down probably due to high prices, poor service and strong local competition. People obviously voted with their feet. Probably an excess of cafes in this area now.

I've been a regular at this coffee shop since Ruth took it over some years ago. Sometimes I haven't time to sit in and so just buy a tasty cake to "take away".
As well as good quality tea and coffee and the most excellent home-made cakes - both in terms of taste and selection - Ruth's Kitchen's does lunches and more recently fine dining evenings. My husband and I went along to one of these evenings and the food was very, very good and great value for money. And no need to pay for a taxi into town and back - result!
One time we were in for a cuppa recently, we witnessed a bride-to-be picking up her wedding cake and if her facial expression and shrieks were anything to go buy, it must've looked amazing.
I can't believe the reviews here which describe the service as unfriendly; Ruth always remembers to ask after friends of mine for months and years after they visited her cafe. Lang may yer lum reek, Ruth!

Everything I went into this place I was made to feel very unwelcome. I got the impression that if you weren't a regular you were not wanted. The good is great no complaints on that front.

Popped in here this morning while we took a break from walking long the Water of Leith.

Received a warm welcom and loved the beautiful mismatched crockery and general ambience.

We had a small cafetiere between two, a hot chocolate, a home-made fruit scone - with generous helpings of butter and jam - and home-made trout pâté with oatcakes and salad garnish.
The total bill was just over £10.
Very good value.
We'll definitely be back.
