I've been going to water of leith for a a few years now. Without fail every time it is wonderful.

The staff are really nice and friendly and the food is really good. There is a regular menu of things and a large list of specials that change regularly and are always interesting and delicious. It's also very good value for money.

Visited this bistro yesterday after reading really good reviews on this site. Everyone who has said this place is great is absolutely correct - it is GREAT. Both my husband and I had the three course weekend special. The food looked wonderful and tasted even better. I am vegetarian and often feel a little let down when eating out as frequently when compared to the carnivorous option my meal is left lacking. Not here though, the vegetarian option was really fabulous. This bistro is a wonderful experience that everyone should try.

This fantastic little restaurant provided the perfect setting for my 70th birthday celebrations. We had the whole place to ourselves - 17 adults and 2 children - the food was amazing and the wine was pretty good too! I can honestly say that I can't remember another restaurant meal providing food with such flavour. I'm told that the Cullen Skink was exceptional!

The service was fantastic - nothing was too much trouble, whether catering for food allergies or fussy children.

The staff went out of their way to make it a really special occasion.

Out of the way and off the main thoroughfare, one could easily walk on by without realising what you might be missing. A hearty welcome was followed by a even heartier rendition of cullin skink which was exemplary - fish and potato in ideal proportions and the creamy broth delivering smoky richness. The main, forging the Auld Alliance in some style, was Croque Madame. This earned its upgraded description from the more mundane Scots "ham n cheese toastie wi' an egg" easily - quality ham, gruyere and rich bechamel topped with a gently fried egg. Chips..sorry, French fries and salad accompanied. After a decent break and a great tip from the charming staff, I was encouraged to try the gateau Breton with salt caramel ice cream and apple compote, pushing the Alliance towards a slightly Gallic bias. This is not to be missed, easily one of the finest desserts I've had (amongst many).
A new favourite spot in Leith.
