Royal Mile Backpackers

I stayed here for one night on a weekend in an 8-bed women's dorm room. The hostel itself is clean and cheerful and the staff is very friendly. There were adults of all ages staying there but it's not a place to stay with young children. The price was a great bargain for being right on the main tourist street in Edinburgh and a short walk from the train station. However, I had the top bunk by the window in a room facing the street. The curtain was torn so the light from a streetlight out front shone in my eyes all night. Worse yet, the street noise was incredibly loud and kept everyone in the room up all night. I would stay here again only if my room didn't face the street.

The locations was perfect. You are a short walk from the airport bus drop off and the train station. It's right on the Royal Mile in the heart of the Old Town. It's a small cozy hostel with very friendly and helpful staff. Each room had it's own security locker and you are provided with your own locker and key in each room, which was fantastic. Hot showers and no line ups! Breakfast is a good deal if you want something simple and cheap to start your day. Not a party hostel, for all ages.

Royal Mile Backpackers is cheap and central and if you're looking for a good location - that's your choice. The kitchen was easily accessible and very convenient.
I did mind the fact that bathrooms were not very clean but perhaps it's not always the staff that's at fault.
It was an ok cheap choice but would not go there again if I were hoping for luxuries.

Overall this is a great hostel. Clean rooms, amazing location and helpful staff.

That being said, the staff here is extremely cliquey. They monopolize the limited public space and regularly ignore paying guests. 99% of the time there is someone laid out across one of the two couches or no one at the desk. Expect the staff to talk to you when you check in and check out, otherwise look elsewhere for any social interaction with locals.

The lcoation of this hostel is great! It is exactly in High Street, and the area is surrounded with tourism attractions, souvenirs shops, eateries, cafes. The Edinburgh Castle and Palace of Holyrood is just a 20 minutes walking distance, alongside the Royal Mile. The shopping district is just a stones away nearby North Bridge, and again just 10-15 minutes walking, also to the Edinburgh Train Station and Edinburgh Bus Station.
Great location for the price we pay.

Nevertheless, a hostel remains a hostel. I stayed in a 8 beds female dorm. The room is so-so, bed is ok, locker works while, the only bad thing is the carpet in the room smell bad. They shouldn't put a carpet there. The bathroom is fine and clean enough, it is only 2 bathrooms and 2 toilets for female. They provide kitchen for guests also a small living room. Wi-fi works only in the kitchen.
They have a sister hostel, just opposite their location, High Street Hostel, which is a bigger and cozier.

The staff are great, friendly and helpful.

I stayed here my first and second night in Scotland, and it was a great place to begin my trip! Everyone was so nice, welcoming, and helpful! The room was nice and cozy with comfortable beds. The bathrooms were a little small and cramped - only 2 toilets and 2 showers for all the girls - however there weren't that many girls. I loved the free wifi and nice breakfast, and the location was perfect! Definitely would stay here again.

Room Tip: female dorm was nice!

It is a cozy little hostel with a great location, right on the royal mile, the main street, and close to everything. Unfortunately, they only have 8 bed dorm rooms and breakfast is not included. They have free wiifii.
