We visited Ediburgh for 2 days as the kick off to our tour of Scotland and it was a great home base. The girls at the front desk were very accommodating and, the stout young lads intervened and carried our bags (and my parents who were travelling with us) up two flights of stars, as the elevator was broken (no biggie - the part had to come from Italy or some such - it was a fancy looking elevator after all). The desk staff also gave us some nice tips of local restaurants and the like as well and really helped take care of our party.

The rooms were stylish and modern and since the hotel is parked at a busy roundabout corner the views of the New City around it are great. And of course, it's across the street from a view of the majestic castle and Royal mile and is in easy walking distance of all of the key sites downtown. Theirs a funky bar downstairs where we had delicious inclusive breakfasts, including the first taste of haggis for all of us (quite tasty) as well as some pre-evening outing drinks. There's a fancier steak resto upstairs but we didn't go there.

Just wanted to let everyone know how good this place is, we stayed in a junior suite room 12. the room itself was fantastic, loved the jacuzzi bath (which was for my girlfriend, but i spent an hour in it!!) it was a lovely touch from the hotel as well as there was a bottle of bubbly waiting in our room when we arrived. The staff are so helpful. The bed is one of the most comfortable that we have ever slept in and the overall experience was great. Fantastic location as well so central but no noise. It did cost a little extra but we did make the most of our room and thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing stay. we would certainly stay here again. We enjoyed a couple of drinks in the huxley and didnt dine there but the food did look very nice as as well.

Lovely boutique type hotel with very welcoming staff, who looked after us from the minute we got there till it was time to go home. The hotel is a 15 minute walk from Waverley Station, we went thru the North Loch gardens, so this made it a pleasant walk too. We were given the Castle View room, which during the day and night gave great views of the Castle. Enjoyed our lunch in the Huxley. Rooms are well equipped and wifi free of charge.
If you are looking for great service for that romantic getaway then choose The Rutland

Room Tip: really loved the Castle View room

What Was Excellent:

The location: very central at the west end of Princes Street. This means that we were near the shops, restaurants, gardens and Castle. We were very happy we stayed here rather than up on the High Street/Royal Mile because, apart from being even more central, the Rutland is in a nicer part of the town than the slightly tawdry and touristy Royal Mile. Besides, some in our group had a room which had a view of the Castle (which, let's face it, is the best thing about the Castle) from one window as well as a view along Princes street from another window. It was an ever-changing, people-watching vista!

The Service: One thing is having friendly and helpful staff. Whether in the wonderful steak restaurant (with meat from well-treated and well-hung animals) or the popular bar, the staff were friendly and good at their job.
But it is when things go wrong that I think you get the true measure of the hospitality of a hotel. When we were there the lift was out of order. This was not a problem for me or my wife, but others in our party had health problems which made the stairs a significant challenge (to the extent that they restricted how many times in a day they went out). I mentioned this to the front desk and the manager got in touch and offered us a complimentary evening meal. And herin lies the secret of hospitality: if your guests have a bad experience which is beyond your control, offer them a good experience in something else which is within your control. Then the memory of the good experience will replace that of the bad one. I am delighted to say that The Rutland are in on this secret!

Other Good Things:
The bar had a buzzing atmosphere and was popular with locals. Very good cocktails, though the measures seemed a bit meagre (I like my martini classes filled rahter than half full!). Sometimes the music was a bit loud for our tastes, but then we could pop accross the road to The Caledonian and sit at their cocktail bar.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the restaurant, not normally being a steak-eater.

The Not Perfect
The lift problem made it not perfect, though the hotel's response to the problem was perfect!
One other thing was the bathroom fittings. Were were pleased with our room and the beds were excellent, but several of the fittings in the bathroom were loose/did not work as they should. (Shower door swung open, shower head holder loose, water streams over whole floor but not made as a wet room). However, these problems are not uncommon in British hotels.

All In All
If I were returning to Edinburgh I would stay at The Rutland again and recommend it to my friends.

Room Tip: Room 5 has both Castle and Princes Street views.

We stayed here in between Christmas and New Year for a very special occasion - to get engaged. We were booked into one of the junior suites, the room was fabulous, amazingly spacious and the bed was so comfy! But we did have one problem - when we tried to use the jacuzzi bath in our room it was spitting out small pieces of black plastic. We called reception and the manager came up to look at the bath, after realising he could not fix it the manager was extremely apologetic and offered us more than adequate compensation and a free breakfast the next morning. The manager and all the staffs helpful and understanding attitude turned what could have been a very bad experience back into an excellent one. We had a fabulous stay and would not hesitiate to return to the hotel.

We chose this hotel based on it's great location in the city. The hotel was clean and tidy and exceed our expectations. The bed was comfortable and our room was of a good size. We ate in the restaurant once and the food was delicious and priced fairly, we will return to this hotel again and thank all the staff for looking after us so well.

I booked the junior suite at the Rutland for a romantic weekend getaway for my fiancé and I. from the moment we checked in to the moment we checked out there is not one fault that I could find. The receptionist took us up to our room and explained how to use all facilities which included the built in sound system, nespresso coffee machine, jacuzzi bath etc which I found to be a nice touch as you are usually handed your room key and left to it. We dined in the Kyloe on our first night and have to say I have never had such a lovely mean it truely was amazing. On the Saturday the girls on the reception were very helpful when finding a restaurant for us for that evening and booked everything up for us to which again we were not disappointed. Overall to sum it up the customer service we received really did make our trip having stayed at many hotels this has to be the best by far for all the personal touches, nothing was ever to much trouble and cannot wait to return
