Owner description: We are Edinburgh's only City Farm located in Gorgie, near Tynecastle. We have large and small livestock including cows, pigs, goats & chickens, and rabbits, guinea pigs, tortoises & a snake and are open to the public for FREE - 7 days a week, with donations appreciated and relied upon to help look after the animals and support the 130+ youth and vulnerable adults who work on the farm every week. We now only have disabled parking so would encourage you to come by bus or lift share if practical as local parking is limited. We offer volunteering opportunities and children's activities including parties. Check out our website for information or get in touch!

“ideal attraction for a toddler/pre-schooler”

My nearly-3 year old and I had a very enjoyable few hours here today. She was very interested in all the animals and we were very impressed that the goats were happy to be stroked and much of the local bird life wasn't startled by us.
The visit would have been improved for us by some signage, for example there was nothing telling you the names of animals in the pets area, and it would be nice to know the stories eg which kids were children of which nanny goats as children like to know this.
In the cafe, I also found the food delicious, but the staff need to clear and wipe tables promptly and look at service systems to make sure people are served promptly.
Thank you

Hi Fiona

Thanks for your review and constructive feedback.
Glad the goats played ball- they may have had ulterior motives but so long as they weren't indulging on your clothes we can live with that!

The signage is a bit of a bugbear- field rotations, fairly regular changes in exact porcine personnel etc and certain goats' bad habits among other reasons make these difficult to maintain accurately and we try and keep them for important messages to avoid sign fatigue!
[We've got to keep something back for the tours and sponsorships too!]

Comments about cafe systems we take on board.

“Great Value and Informative for the Kids”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014

Enjoyed a very enjoyable visit last week with my granddaughter. Despite being located within a limited space the range of animals was very good and all appeared to be well looked after. Lots of baby animals as well and the opportunity to feed them. staff were helpful and it was good to see that the centre was offering training opportunities for a range of young people.

Hi Graeme

Thanks for reviewing; glad you enjoyed yourself.
It's a difficult balance keeping a range of stock whilst making sure all have the required space; but we do our best!
Recent additions include piglets, a ram lamb at last and a calf is on the way... there have been some planned exits - but the 'weans' needed the room, and we needed the sausages- all the tastier for their relaxed lifestyle!

“Good day out”

Went with my school for an introduction to farming, enjoyed the animal tour and interaction with them. The exotic animals were enjoyed by all, however the snake was skipped by a few people for obv reasons :-) very enjoyable with friendly and approachable staff

“Great experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 December 2013

We received a groupon voucher as a birthday gift. We managed to visit the farm on the last day before it closes for winter.
It's a great place especially for families with children. There is so much kids can see and learn.
And for me it was a surprise to find out about a small farm in the city! I loved it.
We've been to the cafe as well. Scones and tea were great.
Happy with our experience!

Hi Valentina
Thanks for the review.
Glad you enjoyed yourself and made it in before the end of the groupon.
We only close Christmas and New Years Day normally though- if only we could promise nice dry weather too!
Lots in progress at the moment on the learning front- chicks, goat kids, lambs, and piglets already and a calf on the way so well worth another visit!

“A good day out”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 November 2013

Second visit to the farm and still very much enamoured by what the guys are doing there, a working small holding in the city? How lucky are we, having access to something like this for free. Particularly like how "real" and unique it is, much of today's attractions are sanitised and its surely good for kids to experience a wee farm that's really a farm! Love the cafe, soup is amazing, cakes far too yummy for my own good. Prices are very reasonable and the place is nicely relaxed and welcoming Will definitely be back, and happy to bring visitors along to share this experience. Things I would change? It would be great if it was closer to the centre of town as, for me, it's in the wrong direction and warrants a special trip. If it was more central it would benefit from passing footfall and, hopefully more donations. How about the council ending the " to do" about the site at the back if the Cannongate and donating the site to the farm? Thanks for a grand day...again.

Thanks for another review Terri, glad to see you enjoyed your visit again; you clearly 'get' us and what we aim and try to be about.
We admin staff have the same difficulty with the cakes...
Sounds like you'd plot well with our manager too- he's one for Grand Schemes and Plans!
