Owner description: The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence in Scotland of Her Majesty The Queen. The palace stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. This fine palace is closely associated with Scotland's rich history and is used by The Queen when carrying out official engagements in Scotland. The State Apartments reflect the changing tastes of successive monarchs, and are renowned for their fine plasterwork ceilings and unrivalled collection of Brussels tapestries. They are furnished with numerous fine paintings and other works of art, many of which have long associations with Holyroodhouse. The visit to Holyroodhouse includes Mary, Queen of Scots' Chambers and the Darnley Rooms, the setting for many dramatic episodes in Mary's short and turbulent reign. In the Palace's west corner tower are Mary's Bedchamber, described as 'the most famous room in Scotland', and her Outer Chamber, the scene of the murder of her Italian secretary, David Rizzio'. During the summer months, you can join a guided tour of Holyrood Abbey, which lies adjacent to the Palace in the spectacular setting of Arthur's Seat. Escorted by Wardens dressed in their ancient hunting Stewart tartan, you will learn about the building's extraordinary history.

“Fantastic place to visit!”
Reviewed 13 June 2012

Low-key palace but a really nice place to visit. The audioguide is well done and the views of the park and abbey ruins are stunning.

Great royal palace opposite the parliament and well worth a visit. The Queen's official Scottish residence, as you would expect the furniture and art colections are outstanding and the guides have great knowledge of the history of the palace and the trials of the history of royal Scotland.

“Great for monarchy fans, inc Mary Queen of Scotts”
Reviewed 12 June 2012

The Palace, Gallery and garden was definately worth a couple hours in a 1 or 2 day trip. There was enough content from modern monarchy as well as from Mary Queen of Scotts and the Stuart Kings for those interested. We allowed app 3 hrs to walk from near Waverly Sta, and tour the Palace, gallery and garden.

“Spare Palace”
Reviewed 12 June 2012

Hardly ever occupied by royalty, and it looks like that. Outside it is very good and the basic design and layout is interesting and authentic. But the furnishings and decoration would not stand muster against many other stately homes in Scotland. It simply doesn't feel lived in or homely.
