Owner description: The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence in Scotland of Her Majesty The Queen. The palace stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. This fine palace is closely associated with Scotland's rich history and is used by The Queen when carrying out official engagements in Scotland. The State Apartments reflect the changing tastes of successive monarchs, and are renowned for their fine plasterwork ceilings and unrivalled collection of Brussels tapestries. They are furnished with numerous fine paintings and other works of art, many of which have long associations with Holyroodhouse. The visit to Holyroodhouse includes Mary, Queen of Scots' Chambers and the Darnley Rooms, the setting for many dramatic episodes in Mary's short and turbulent reign. In the Palace's west corner tower are Mary's Bedchamber, described as 'the most famous room in Scotland', and her Outer Chamber, the scene of the murder of her Italian secretary, David Rizzio'. During the summer months, you can join a guided tour of Holyrood Abbey, which lies adjacent to the Palace in the spectacular setting of Arthur's Seat. Escorted by Wardens dressed in their ancient hunting Stewart tartan, you will learn about the building's extraordinary history.

“A pleasant surprise”
Reviewed 31 August 2014

Visited on a rainy day in early August and spent a lot longer there than first imaged. Very good audio guide which kept our eight year old entertained. Don't miss the Palace .

“Make sure you pop into the palace”
Reviewed 30 August 2014 via mobile

We chose a perfect morning to visit as the palace provided shelter from a very rainy Tuesday morning.
So interesting to see where the Queen 'hangs out' when in Scotland.
The phone tour was was extremely informative & clear.
My son particularly enjoyed the history of Mary Queen Of Scots...as he'd recently covered this topic at school & so was able to relate.
The whole tour can be done in about 2hrs.
Im sure a walk around the gardens afterwards would be pleasant on a sunnier day.
The cafe looked very busy....we didn't eat there but I must say the food on display looked extremely fresh & appetising.

“Worth a visit but...”
Reviewed 30 August 2014

I think the Palace is worth a visit. The building is attractive, the fact that it is still used (sometimes) by the Queen is interesting and so is the Mary QofS connection. The audioguide is really excellent and included in the entrance fee. The rooms themselves are attractive enough but, to be honest, I've seen better in many a National Trust 'stately home' and you can usually get a bit closer to the items in those - here, everything is roped off. Talking of which, the gardens are especially disappointing. I would have liked to see what was actually growing in the borders but you're not allowed on the grass and, therefore, can't get near them. As a result, you trot round the whole lot in about ten minutes. If its your first time in Edinburgh though, you should definitely go.

“Great Saturday afternoon here”
Reviewed 30 August 2014

We came here on a lovely end of summer afternoon and took the Royal Tour which included access to apartments, gardens and Queens Gallery. Thoroughly enjoyed with audio tour throughout, letting all go at own pace. Wardens were always to hand and answered any queries you may have regarding the collection.
