Owner description: The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence in Scotland of Her Majesty The Queen. The palace stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. This fine palace is closely associated with Scotland's rich history and is used by The Queen when carrying out official engagements in Scotland. The State Apartments reflect the changing tastes of successive monarchs, and are renowned for their fine plasterwork ceilings and unrivalled collection of Brussels tapestries. They are furnished with numerous fine paintings and other works of art, many of which have long associations with Holyroodhouse. The visit to Holyroodhouse includes Mary, Queen of Scots' Chambers and the Darnley Rooms, the setting for many dramatic episodes in Mary's short and turbulent reign. In the Palace's west corner tower are Mary's Bedchamber, described as 'the most famous room in Scotland', and her Outer Chamber, the scene of the murder of her Italian secretary, David Rizzio'. During the summer months, you can join a guided tour of Holyrood Abbey, which lies adjacent to the Palace in the spectacular setting of Arthur's Seat. Escorted by Wardens dressed in their ancient hunting Stewart tartan, you will learn about the building's extraordinary history.

Bright, airy, elegant and beautiful selection of cakes. We tried the whisky soaked fruit cake and melt in the mouth shortbread, yummy!

“Nice day out”
Reviewed 1 September 2014

A little bit windy on an otherwise nice day out. The kids fairly enjoyed it after going to Dynamic Earth which is literally next door. It was quite busy and a good atmosphere all round. We were all delighted to get back home for a rest as there was so much walking around done. Recommended

“History, art, architecture and royalty ”
Reviewed 31 August 2014 via mobile

The visit to the palace was even better than we expected. The palace had amazing artwork and furniture which was several centuries old and connected to various members of the royal family. The history and artifacts for Mary Queen of Scots was particularly well done. The abbey ruins were hauntingly beautiful.

“Fascinating Palace and grounds”
Reviewed 31 August 2014

This palace is a wonderful historical gem with very interesting history as well as displaying well preserved paintings and objects d'art. The audio guides were very helpful in providing background for the various rooms. Good volume and clear information was definitely a plus. The gardens were amazing, so take the time to visit them. After we finished the tour we sat in the little outdoor café and had lovely tea with an excellent scone and just absorbed the ambience. I can understand why the Queen still stays there while she is in Scotland.
