We have to be honest and say that we had travelled down the Royal Mile to visit The Canongate Kirk, but that was closed for a choir rehearsal. However, we were then attracted to this Museum that is opposite and this proved to be our lucky day. This is an absolute treasure trove of diverse items which benefits close inspection and more than one visit to give true justice. Free to enter and with helpful staff we will call again. Particularly impressive is the collection relating to Earl Haig, very pertinent at the present time. Also the Greyfriars Bobby story is explained in full with historic photographs and even his donated collar. Recommended.

Follow the royal mile downhill to Canongate and you will come across this delightful museum. It is two interconnected buildings dated from the 16th century.
Inside it is more than a museum the building has character and wonderful old features.
It is free to enter and not too daunting on a hot summers day.
We arrived at 2 0 clock whereupon a character tour was about to begin. It was volunteers who dress up and re enact events and characters from Edinburgh's past. This was very well done and offered us an insight into Edinburgh's history.
The museum has some stunning artefacts and is set on several floors including a costume area where you can dress up as characters.
This museum is suited for all age groups.

Friendly staff, a bigger museum than People's Story across the road. It gives great insight into the city's past and has a good collection of artefacts. There is also a wonderful kids room where they are welcome to try on costumes and also do craft/colouring for either 5p or 10p per sheet. They provide all the scissors/glue etc. There is also some artefacts the kids can touch and a book telling you all about them. Really well done and worth a visit.

Nice small museum about the city of Edinburgh and its history. A bit spread out. Things for children to interact with.
