The Thrums hotel is a very comfortable, centrally located B&B, perfect for a visit to the Edinburgh Fringe, situated on Minto Street, that is very accessible to the city attractions, performers and castle. It is reasonably priced for a short stay. The main areas could do with contemporary update, room was acceptable.

We stayed for 3 nights whilst visiting Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It was in a very convenient location, easy to get to and from by car and with buses outside the door to get us to the railway station when we wanted to travel by train. The hotel generally had a look of neglect and there were small items in our somewhat dingy room which needed repair. For example, we had a patio door in our ground floor room but when we tried to get out that way the handle came off in my hand. Similarly, one of the leather straps which served as wardrobe handles had a screw which pulled out. However, the room was clean and the beds were comfortable and, once we had established how the shower worked, there was ample good hot water.
The car park for this hotel was at the rear but there was no indication on the gate in the side street to indicate this was the car park. A sign on the gate with the name of the hotel would be helpful. Once we had established we were in the right place -( a little unsettling as one worried one might be trespassing on private property) - the young man who registered us was friendly and helpful. However, it was alarming to be told there was a 2% surcharge for using a debit card as well as a credit card. The young man agreed to wait for payment until we had been to a cashpoint but it could have been tricky to withdraw the amount of cash required for a longer stay than our three days.
We had one very early start during our stay, leaving the hotel before 6 in the morning. Without asking we were offered a take away breakfast, which was hanging on our door handle when we left. It was excellent. The continental breakfast we ate in the bright conservatory was also quite good but here we had the impression it was a bit "take it or leave it". We did not experience the same friendly helpfulness we had in reception. The wooden tables, although clean, were rather scratched and would have benefitted from some table clothes.
Summing up, this hotel suited our purpose but I would be unlikely to recommend it to others. Just a little attention to repairs and brightening up of décor would make a huge difference.

We stayed at the Thrums for 7 nights end of July '14'. Very disappointed. The room was dingy, tired and in need of much repair. Half of the secondary glazing was missing paint very dirty as was panelling around room. The bed was clean and comfortable but the sheets obviously hadn't been pressed they appeared to have been dried scrunched up. The bathroom had a hole in the floor but otherwise clean and functioning. At the beginning of the week our towels were changed and clean ones left. Towards the end of the week we had to ask for clean towels. The waste bin had liners in at the start of the week again as the week went on they were missing. Our cups for drinks were always marked. The floor was vacuumed once only and underneath the bed the dust and rubbish from other guests obviously had been there a while. We paid for a cooked breakfast which was okay but for some reason we weren't allowed bacon when we asked the manager he just said we don't do bacon with no explanation then walked away. We have stayed in 3 star accommodation before and received better service and quality of accommodation.
This hotel is not worth the money, but could be a nice if more attention was given to it.
The location of the hotel is the only plus side as it is convenient for the city centre and local buses.

Room Tip: rooms are big and spacious, quieter at the back of the building. Can't give a specific room to g...

I think this place needed updating. I booked a family room, not sure it was. The carpets were a bit grubby and the room was very dark. Not sure who ran the place, however the chap at reception was very pleasant. The bed was also very comfortable

Stayed at Thrums for 2 nights in a family room with 2 teenagers. Overall the accommodation was satisfactory but no more. Not as clean as I would like. Some aspects of the room looked tired especially the carpet. Great location for getting into Edinburgh (20 min walk or regular buses) On arrival we were greeted by a very polite, helpful young man on reception and the building itself is very impressive. Not sure on security as we had one key which opened both the front door and our room? The worst thing was the lack of friendliness from the lady who seemed to be in charge of the breakfast room. No greeting as we entered, barely a smile and a very brusque manner when making even a basic request. We overheard her speak to an Italian couple and a French family in a very condescending way as if everything was an inconvenience. The breakfast was also very basic. It makes me cross when people in the service industry really can't be bothered. We loved Edinburgh but will look for more friendly welcome if we return.
