“Great hotel and location - friendly staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2012

Myself and my Husband visited Edinburgh for our first wedding anniversary, and we stayed here. It's a very new hotel, it has a nice modern feel to it and everywhere is very clean, which is a huge plus for me!
I told the hotel in advance that this was a special trip, and they very kindly upgraded us free of charge to an executive suite, and there was a bottle of prosecco and nibbles on arrival in our room, complimentary of course! We thought that this was a very nice touch and was a great start to our trip. The room itself was nicely decorated - a bit orange, but everyone has their own tastes! The shower was fabulous, very roomy. Aveda cosmetics too!
The staff were all very friendly and accommodating, they couldn't do enough for us.
The location of the hotel is fantastic, right in the middle of the new town, and a short walk from the old town.
My only gripe was our room was overlooking the tram works on the main road of York Place - it was a good job that I packed my ear plugs. We were also overlooking a very busy bus stop. You expect to have some noise in a hotel on the middle of a busy city - but it did get a little too much at times.
Other than the above, we had a great time here, I would certainly return - I would just ask for a room at the back of the hotel!

Room Tip: If you're visiting for a special occasion, make the hotel aware. Book your parking in advance if...

Our first stay with the new Hotel Indigo brand and a great success from start to finish. We arrived late and a member of the reception staff did an Olympic sprint to guide us to the parking space we had reserved and then to the hotel. From this helpful and friendly start, we had a great stay right through to checkout and beyond, (my wife having left expensive perfume in the room and housekeeping posting this to us afterwards).
The interior design of the hotel is very attractive, our room being the most appealing of any chain / brand we have stayed in, being very well equipped, comfortably contemporary and spacious. Notably, the ventilation and aircon units were very quiet in their operation and indicate the attention to detail that has gone into the design and specification of this hotel. The public areas were comparatively small but again very attractively designed and they worked fine even on the busiest of the three days of our stay.
Breakfast was of excellent quality and offered a good if slightly limited choice. Service was generally of a high standard and all the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. The small bar was also a pleasant venue for afternoon tea, which had a creative twist in both it's presentation and taste, offering a convenient and interesting alternative to more established venues in the city.
Finally, the hotel's location was just right as we had easy walking access to the New and Old Towns as well as a wide range of bus routes passing right outside the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front (North) of the hotel are double glazed so well insulated from street noise even d...

My first impressions were not good - this hotel is in York Place which is currently closed to all traffic except buses. In the minds of the city fathers, taxis do not count as public service vehicles. My taxi driver dropped me apologetically at the end of the street and I had to struggle along to the entrance with luggage. I was greeted by steep steps and, if it was not for the kindness of strangers - lots of them waiting at the bus stop immediately in front of the hotel - I might still be there... At Reception I was assured that there is a separate entrance which is indicated by a tiny sign (Ring Bell for Assistance) with its own lift so that people with pushchairs, wheelchairs or other encumbrances can access the building. Pity they don't make that clearer to arriving patrons. Once in and settled you will be pleasantly surprised by the standard of the hotel. The rooms are clean, bright, modern and thoughtfully fitted in schemes of turquoise or orange. Bathrooms are modern with large walk in showers. Rooms are equipped with a small fridge and complementary teas, coffees, biscuits, milk and snacks. The restaurant and room service food is fantastic - congratulations to the chef and kitchen staff. The service and reception staff could not be more helpful and they get full marks for going out of their way to make guests feel welcome. The location is good for central city activities. The only issue is the tramworks which dominate the road and cause noise and disruption. Otherwise this would be a full 5 stars.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are less prone to road noise

we were placed here after our original hotel was over-booked and what a fantastic suprise. Great location during the festival. Our room was stunning - we had our daughter with us so the room was for 3. We had two large double beds and a lounge area. Brilliant shower, great decor and the staff were superb. Best surprise of all was the restaurant which was as good as I've experienced in a hotel restaurant. Will definitely be back.

My partner and I spent 4 nights here. We had a blast in Edinburgh. On our 1st night we visited the bar. The young lady running the bar (I forget her name, but I remember that she was from England) was so friendly, and she kept the beer flowing. We talked to her for a very long time. The room was awesome. The small refrigerator was stocked every day with Irn-Bru and great shortbread!!! The hotel is in a very good location - Waverley Station, the Scott Memorial, Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street, and the Royal Mile were within a 10 minute walk. The bed was very comfortable. The breakfast in the restaurant was nice as well.

Room Tip: I liked being on the bottom floor. The lift was a little slow.

So you are spoilt for choice for hotels in Edinburgh, why choose Hotel Indigo?

Well it's in a good location for all you need to do and see, it's relatively new and it comes with a relatively good reputation. But is it really as special or boutique special or even different...? The answer is a simple no. It is OK and average and so a little over priced for what you'll get.

This room was small but still stuffed full of furniture - designer chair, low table, high bed, cushions. Plus every surface had some guide or magazine on and the bathroom, whilst well fitted, required yet more shifting of bits to make room for your washbag / makeup bag. Time to stop thinking magazine photo shoot and turn to the practicalities of your guests.

It's all nicely done but don't expect to swing a cat, should you have packed one.

Before you get excited about a free mini bar, this guest had exactly:

can of coke
can of irn bru
small pack of pringles
caramel bar
fruit sweets

But no milk, so no nice cup of tea to savour in the morning. Indigo, if you are going to offer something at least do it properly. It's a basic fundamental and your housekeeping staff should be checking.

The iron and ironing board, once you figure where to squeeze it in, was cheap and leaked water.

There are some one off gripes which this guest didn't and you shouldn't take to heart, but does indicate this hotel isn't up to the scratch it should be.

When I arrived the restaurant had shut due to some unexplained catastrophie: no food and no room service. As a frequent traveller, not sure this had been experienced before. The wifi code was out of date and even if free wifi is a nice bonus these days, equally you expect front of house to give you a valid one when the slip of paper clearly stated the day before on closer inspection. Oh and the Gym was shut too, for another catastrophie no doubt. Not a good day for them was it...

All in all, this feels like a slightly up market budget hotel, which is certainly no insult. It's not boutique for all its town house pretensions but it's clearly tried to make the best of a restrictive space.

It's style over substance and when you are spoilt for choice, this traveller at least, wouldn't trouble the doors of an Indigo again.

Small and cozy hotel extremely well located with regards to the central station and the city centre. The multi-tasked staff was super efficient and friendly.

It was my first stay in the Indigo chain which I highly recommend especially if you like chic hotels.
