My family & I visited the Grosvenor in April '04, & found the experience quite acceptable. The Hotel is by no means anything special to look at nor are the rooms, they are simple rooms- adequate to the task. Beds were comfortable enough, the largest problem we found was with the bathroom facilities. I too, stayed in the room which has the shower within a closet (not all the rooms are like this), & found this clostrofobic & inadequate. The shower or toilet didnt work terribly well (aka water pressure- common problem in uk), but we did manage. The location of the hotel was ok, though the surrounding streets are extremely dirty with litter. There are many hotels within the same area, & all seems quite alright- many perhaps more so than the Grosvenor. My advice though would be to go to a hotel closer towards 'The Royal Mile'- attraction near castle. In all, we enjoyed our stay, found the staff quite friendly, though I would have to agree with a previous review regarding the breakfast service. Nice food, however often felt rushed by the waitress, & outnumbered by all the guests waiting. For a short stay, worth a look, though plead for the room without the closet shower!

The hotel's location is excellent for getting around (both on foot and by bus), and the rate is reasonable, but the accomodation and service dampened our first-time experience of Edinburgh. Service bordered on unfriendly. The mattress was so sunken I had to put pillows under my legs otherwise I got pains in my lower back. I had to request a mattress pad, otherwise it was just a thin sheet over the mattress.
Breakfast is served for only a short time, and because of that everyone in the hotel shows up near the same time and then the orders can take a long time to arrive (this caused me to almost miss a reserved bus tour.
(And for some reason they play really bad American rock as the "background" music in the dining room. And you can't turn it off because there's a sign on the boom box that says NOT to turn it off.) In the room we stayed in the shower was in a closet and when you step in or out you are in the hotel room, so it's mighty inconvenient if there's another person, like a child or relative with you. On the plus side, there's a tea pot and a daily dram of whiskey provided, and a speed-dial taxi service, though you save at least three pounds by walking a half block and hailing your own.
