I recently had the wonderful opportunity to stay at the Balmoral. My room was fabulous! The view of Edinburgh was amazing as well. Even better, however, was the lovely staff. My flight arrived well before check in time and they were extremely accomodating about having my room ready as soon as possible. I was consistently greeted with a smile and "how may I help you?". The concierge offered great recommendations and one of the men actually walked me to the train station with my luggage upon my departure, helped me get my ticket and left me at my exact train! They definitely went above and beyond to make my stay in Edinburgh fantastic!

This time it was a brief stay at The Balmoral and it was a family trip (previously I have stayed there a few times on business), with six of us (four kids aged between 8 and 14), but they excelled in every way...from the great welcome the kids got (kids packs and snacks in the room), to the fantastic and large rooms (we had two junior suites which were perfect!), through to the first class attitude and service of all the staff we had contact with (special note - Rob, the senior guy on the front desk looked after us really well).

All-in-all we cannot fault the hotel in any way. It is the best hotel in Edinburgh, in the best location, with the best staff and the highest standards ....our stay could not have been better.

Room Tip: Try to get a Princes Street view.

I stayed here on a trip that was a mix of business and pleasure, and pretty much everything about the hotel was five-star. Its beautiful exterior architecture and huge clock tower is visible throughout Edinburgh, making it a landmark; its location is ideal for exploring all of the city's major sights, from the Castle to Holyrood to Arthur's Gate.

I was really impressed with the interior. The hotel has kept all of its historic charm, but is infused with lots of modern furnishings and touches that give it a very up-to-date feel of modern luxury. Unlike at a lot of older hotels, our room (a standard King) was incredibly spacious, and it had extremely high ceilings that added grandeur. The bathroom, at the back of the room, had tons of light from windows and elegant tiling. It also had a great soaking tub with a wonderful rainshower. And the bed! The bed was one of the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever experienced -- a perfect mattress with extremely high-quality sheets. It was one of those beds that was hard to get out of! The room's decor honored the hotel's history, but featured modern artwork, understated colors and fabrics, and subtle lighting. It was really perfect -- modern without feeling austere or cheap; historic without feeling frilly or over-the-top.

The hotel's other facilities matched the quality of the room -- the lobby was elegant, the fitness center had a wide selection of equipment and a coffee bar with complimentary water, juices, etc., and the restaurant was nice. We didn't go to the Michelin-starred restaurant, Number One, or the bar.

Our room rate included breakfast; I'd recommend going for this option, as the breakfast was wonderful. Service was polite and fast, and the buffet had a great selection of yoghurts, fruit, cereals, pastries, cheeses, meats, breads, and traditional Scottish hot items. The coffee was delicious. Everything was fresh and very tasty; with such an abundant breakfast, we were able to have an extremely light lunch each day of our visit.

Service was, for the most part, excellent. Check-in was fast and very polite, as was check-out. Housekeeping service was comprehensive with especially detail-oriented turndown service that featured slippers, rugs, water, etc. The only service miss was the concierge. When we asked him to make a reservation, he did so, but neglected to follow-up to tell us it was made (we ascertained it had been from the restaurant); on another instance, when we inquired at the concierge desk about airport transportation, the concierge on duty acted as if he could not be bothered with such pedestrian concerns. The service throughout the rest of the hotel was so excellent, though, that we overlooked this minor miss.

HIGHLY recommended. It's expensive, but the quality of the rooms, facilities, and service matched the price, and you can't ask for a more beautiful or better location to explore Edinburgh.

If you enjoy a full service luxury hotel with excellent gym, pool, and spa services, unusually good service and outstanding food, then the Balmoral is the hotel for you in Edinburgh. The bar and reading rooms were lovely.
I know this sounds over the top, but it was absolutely true! The management must be making an extraordinary effort with its staff training, because I can't fault anything. I always stay in 4-5 star hotels, and usually have to call down for little things like extra bottled water, or towels, or fresh flowers. Not here! Nothing was overlooked...and you could practically swim in the bathtub. I'm usually a very tough hotel critic, but found nothing to fault at the Balmoral.

Room Tip: Rooms were ample, but suites might be better located in the building.

The hotel is located immediately next to the Edinburgh - Waverly rail station. This is key if you are traveling around more than just Scotland.

Our room was facing the Edinburgh Castle which is an amazing view. No need to rent a car if you are staying here and not venturing out of Edinburgh. All major tourist attractions are walking distance from this hotel.

The hotel itself had very courteous staff who were very attentive starting with the doorman and ending with the room service. The hotel isn't the most technologically advanced if you're used to 5 diamond hotels in Vegas but it is perfect for being in Scotland and wanting to stay somewhere famous and fairly old (the final Harry Potter book was written by J.K. Rowling in room 652 and we were just down the hall).

The hotel has a magnificent restaurant (Number One) which is Michelin rated (see seperate review of restaurant) and probably the best foie gras we have ever enjoyed.

Every time we entered or left the hotel, we were greeted with smiling staff that were helpful and courteous. We decided to tackle Arthur's Seat and were immediately provided cold bottled water upon our return to the hotel.

Concierge also had great restaurant recommendations if we weren't dining at the hotel's restaurants.

Thanks Balmoral, we will definitely recommend and stay again!

Dear Guest

Thank you for sharing your experience of your recent stay with us. I am so pleased to learn that my colleagues took such good care of you and aided you in making the most of your time in Edinburgh. The views from Arthur's Seat are certainly worth the climb, which in turn helps to work up a fine appetite in readiness to sample our chef’s culinary delights in number one!

We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

We celebrated our wedding at The Balmoral Hotel and I can't quite put in to words how wonderful it was. Everything went like clockwork because the hotel staff organised it so well. The reception rooms (Annan for pre and post dinner drinks and Beauly Suite for meal) are beautiful as are the other areas of the hotel. The food and wine were delicious and the waiting staff were excellent and very professional. We actually got married at the Castle and the Concierge did a great job of organising the transport for guests. The event staff were brilliant and nothing at all was too much trouble for them (even sourced Tiffany Blue ribbon for the chair bows!). Big thanks to Elizabeth Bell for looking after us and making sure we had the best day ever!
I would highly recommend this hotel for your wedding, considering the level of service you get for your moeny, it's a bargain.

We have stayed at some nice hotels, some costing a lot more, but The Balmoral Hotel is by far the best. We travelled with our 10 month old daughter and they were incredibly accomodating, even bring a toy box to our room which was much appreciated by our daughter who had been travelling for three weeks with only the same four toys. This was on top of the cot, baby bath, teddy bear, bath duckie, bottle warmer, bottle sterilliser, nappies and change mat. We both used their Spa getting massages which was great, and the pool area was AMAZING. They gave us a late check out (so my husband could watch the footy live from Australia). The room was so spacious (over twice a normal hotel room) with a very lovely soft bed. The only negative was our windows face the middle of the building so the view wasn't great. We will definately be back again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the outside.
