“Unsurpassed elegance that welcomes children”
Reviewed 10 October 2011

Wow, this hotel taught us that top luxury amenities are not just for adults. The Balmoral offers a special welcome and room amenities just for kids! We enjoyed the adjoining rooms available when you book a family room rate, and they stunned us with all the thought they put into welcoming wee ones. The spa even has splash times that permit children in the pool and the hotel provides child size robes & slippers! The breakfast in the hotel dining room is more than anyone would want with nice service as well. Finally, we loved where the hotel was lcated! Within walking distance of The RoyalMile and every site we wanted to visit.

I did not stay at this hotel and this review is simply of the Balmoral Hotel as a piece of architecture. The building is absolutely stunning! Massive and occupying most of a city block, the hotel is visible from all over town. It is especially impressive at night. A stunning building and even if you cannot afford to stay there I would recommend taking a look.

Located at the end of Princes Street near the Scott monument, this grande dame hotel is next to the train station and near all the main attractions in Edinburgh. We had room 611, a junior suite upgraded from booked Deluxe King. Nice bedroom with comfortable bed; excellent modern bathroom; sitting room with desk, 2 easy chairs (which we moved there from the bedroom), small table and TV; anteroom good for luggage storage out of sight.
Service excellent throughout. Breakfast buffet totally excellent ( BP17 or BP21 if you take anything cooked). Dinner in the Brasserie very good but not great.
Highly recommended if you can stand the 5 star tariff.

Very beautiful hotel. In the center of it all, very close to the train station which is nice. You can literally walk to the trains. The staff are VERY friendly and helpful--probably the best part of the hotel. The rooms were beautifully laid out and very spacious as well. Breakfast was decent.

Overall, a great hotel, but definitely a splurge.

Is is our first trip advisor review after using it for several years. As you will see in my ratings I have tried to be very fair, but as discussed in my comments our experience has been very bad. I post this so that you have a fair consideration in looking at this hotel.

Currently at the Balmoral. The facility is very nice and hard to beat. The rooms are nicely sized and well appointed and the staff tries to be friendly and accommodating. We have had the usual "bumps in the road" checking in and they were very responsive and polite dealing with bags, etc. No complaints on any of those fronts.

Our issue is with climate control and room noise. The hallways on the 6th floor have been extremely hot which was ok because our room was comfortable. However last night our room was also hot to the point that we perspired in bed. In addition the wind howled through our room all night. We litteraly can see the wind moving the curtain in our window and the door to the hallway rattles from the wind blowing. Needless to say we didnt sleep much last night. I stopped by the desk to discuss this morning. The initial response was that they apologize but the hotel is very old and the wind is blowing hard (nothing addressed on climate control).

They finally offered (very politely) to move us to an interior room with no change in rate (vs. Our Castle view room) because otherwise they can not control the wind noise. I hope that the temperature is under control but at least the wind will not be an issue.

I am not sure if there is another top notch hotel in Edinburgh but I would research before staying in the Balmoral. While the facility is very nice and the staff is very courteous they simply can not control the climate or the influence of the winds. While on vacation need our rest and have not been able to
sleep. If you do stay at the Balmoral avoid the 6th floor. It is the top floor and likely one reason that they cannot control. I hope you have better luck on a lower floor.

balmoraledinburgh, Manager at The Balmoral Hotel, responded to this review, 6 October 2011
Dear Guest

Firstly may I thank you for your positive comments about the Balmoral Hotel. Whilst I was pleased to read that you enjoyed our facilities and found the service to be of a high standard, I do regret any discomfort you experienced on your first night due to the high wind and the temperature of your room. Edinburgh has experienced exceptionally high wind speeds during the last few days. Wind does not generally cause a problem in our rooms so our engineer is now looking at the insulation and windows to see if anything further can be done to minimise any drafts in this room.
All of our rooms feature individual temperature controls. Our maintenance team are now also checking the air conditioning in this room to ensure it is functioning correctly.

I am pleased that you seemed happy with the remainder of your stay upon departure yesterday and do hope that you will therefore consider returning to stay at The Balmoral. Please contact me directly if you would like to discuss your stay further or if I can be of any assistance in making your future arrangements.

Yours sincerely

We have stayed at the Bothwell Suite in the hotel a number of times over the last couple of years and find the hotel wonderful, in fact of all the hotels we stay in over the world we consider this one of the best, and although it isn't cheap we love the warm welcome and the fact there is nothing to complain about.

We were therefore disappointed this time on a couple of fronts, which although do not distract from the lovely stay we had, does make us thing that standards are starting to slip slightly - nothing major, but slightly annoying.

Firstly we were asked prior to our stay if there was anything they could do to help and we asked for assistance with our baggage from the station, giving details of our arrival - well the Waverley Steps are an endurance workout on their own! Unfortunately no help arrived. We managed no problem, but it didn't set a very good first impression.

There were major works going on at Waverley Steps and when we were asked if any work would be undertaken at the weekend, as we didn't want to be disturbed, we were advised categorically that there definitely wouldn't be but if we would like to move rooms we could. As it turned out we should have been more specific as although there was no work on the Steps themselves there was building works undertaken on the Sunday at the station straight below us. We appreciate that there is nothing the hotel can do about this, but would have liked them to have been upfront about it when we asked. Again more disappointing than annoying.

It is also funny how small things can frustrate. We requested newspapers, but it only turned up on the first morning. The Sunday paper didn't arrive, even after room service was advised of the problem and on Monday we had to call reception. Both times it eventually arrived, but when you have room service breakfast then you like to read the paper at the same time. Again not life changing, but a niggle.

And finally whilst i'm on a role and getting the little gripes off my chest I can't understand why the room service breakfast was wrong two out of three mornings - why doesn't someone just check off the request card with whats on the tray before delivering it, this simple task would help so much as if you have to phone for Jam, or Flora or Milk the rest of the breakfast then goes cold before it arrives again!

That's me done - Please don't think that we had a horrible time or that we are complete whiners, it just that we hold this hotel in such high regard that we are a little disappointed that the standards have started to slip.

We will probably return, but maybe after the works to the station are complete in 2012.

This hotel really exceeds expecrations! Service was exceptional from when they park your car to when they bring it back... I couldn't say a bad word about any of the staff, each and everyone of them go above and beyond to provide the best service possible. The room we got was fantastic, the hotel itself is beautiful and the food and drink service exceptional.... You really get what you pay for, from breakfast to end of night drinks this place makes you feel special.
