“Always a pleasure...”
Reviewed 19 February 2012

I've stayed in the Balmoral several times over the years for business and it's always a pleasure to return to it. Nothing is ever too much for the staff, whether it's Kevin sorting out restaurants for me on the Concierge desk or Ian making sure an espresso is never too far away.

The styling of the rooms is classic but contemporary and never jars the eye (Always a nice feature of Rocco Forte Hotels). I was lucky to be given a deluxe category room and the bed was amazing...had a great night's sleep!
Room service breakfast arrived right on time the next morning and all in all I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. I only wish it had a been a bit longer.

The hotel is perfectly located, right in the middle of town and immediately above Waverley station. It has a variety of bars, restaurants and a lovely Palm Court to have Afternoon Tea.

But it's the service that always stands out for me. It's impeccable.

Room Tip: Ask for a Castle view, Suite 522 is the JK Rowling Suite where Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows...

I have recently spent some time in Edinburgh, which is a great city to visit; we stayed at the Balmoral Hotel. The service is what you would expect from a 5 star hotel, but better, all the staff are helpful and friendly, from check in to check out we enjoyed our stay. It was my partner birthday, and after we had taken a relaxing swim in the pool, and had a steam, we came back to our room to find a plate with a chocolates and happy birthday on the plate, I only mentioned it at check in and the young lady picked up on it, these are the touched I have got to say make a great hotel. The Balmoral bar is brilliant, the staff where excellent, and the waitresses and cocktail makers are an asset to the hotel, catering to whatever cocktail you want and how you want it (making a strong Vespa for me) One night we had the 5-course cocktail taster menu, by the end of the 5th cocktail we where full and out for the count, very good service, excellent staff and just the type of luxury service I really enjoy. 100% recommend this hotel, brilliant location too.

We stayed at The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh for four nights in February 2012. The hotel in an historical and architectural landmark, located at the top of Royal Mile. Aside from the Zoo and Royal Britannia Yacht, everything you want to see in Edinburgh is at your doorstep. The plaque upon entry says Children Welcome, and mine (ages 7, 4 & 1) were treated like royalty from the moment we arrived. The staff is friendly and the service impeccable. The rooms are beautiful and our views up the hillside were breathtaking. The concierge was also fabulous, even having two glasses of champagne sent to our table one evening at dinner out on the town. The children had bathrobes and slippers awaiting them, as well as a welcome art pack. The baby's crib was made up, diapers laid out, changing table set, bottle warmer and sterilizer prepared and baby bath (complete with custom rubber duckie) in the bathroom. On the first night there were cookies and roasted marshmallows awaiting them in the afternoon and in night two Balmoral-embroidered bathrobed teddy bears arrived. When I had to call room service and request information relating to food allergies they were fabulous (even offering to replace the plate of sweets with other items, while apologizing profusely -- I had not informed them previously of any food issues.). I cannot say enough about this hotel, this is my first posting on Trip Advisor as a result!

We stopped at The Balmoral for two nights over Valentine's day this week, having booked it after using Trip Advisor to choose our hotel.

I have travelled all over the world and stayed in many four and five star hotels, and can honestly say that I have never experienced such wonderful service from the staff, nothing was too much trouble for anyone, our bags were collected promptly by the concierge on arrival without us having to say a word, the restaurant staff remembered our name after the first morning, they were all attentive without being intrusive, it was almost as though you were about to ask for something and they appeared there as though they had pre-empted your request! But they never 'got in the way' or fussed around you.

We arrived at 9am on the first morning due to having taken an early flight, the receptionist took my number and said she would call as soon as they were able to get our room ready. We went for breakfast in the hotel and within half an hour received a call to say our room was ready! and upgraded free of charge

The room was excellent, I really don't know why people on here have complained about the inward facing/courtyard rooms as we had one and it was fine. Nice and quiet when we went to sleep, spacious and comfortable with a spacious bathroom and loads of mirrors which is good when you are both getting ready to go out. The one and only thing I would recommend is having tea and coffee making facilities in the room. On our last morning we did ring up to order tea and coffee from room service which, when it arrived, was a kettle and cups plus loads of sachets/tea bags. So if you do stop here order it on the first day then you will have it in your room for the whole stay!

The hotel is in a brilliant location and centrally situated for sightseeing and shopping. The Castle and Royal Mile are a short walk away. We also took a nearby tour bus from Waverley Bridge which will get you anywhere and back within an hour.

The spa/pool area is great to go and relax in after a day out and about and before a night out. And finally the Palm Court bar is superb, we went in for champagne which ended in us staying for longer than planned as it was so fantastic.

We will definitely return to The Balmoral and am looking forward to returning soon. It really is a fantastic hotel and I cannot recommend it enough.

We spent Valentines weekend in the Balmoral and completely fell in love with the place. It's obviously the place to stay in Edinburgh as we often passed crowds of onlookers and paparazzi on the pavement outside, which made it so much fun to be greeted by the tartaned doorman and shown inside!

The Balmoral is an old classic hotel but spotlessly clean and well maintained with a classic calm interior. It's not an ultra modern i pod dock type of place but we didn't want that. The basement pool and spa are great, and afternoon tea in the Palm Court is highly recommended. All the staff were so friendly and professional it was a complete joy to stay there. And as for location - literally 1 minute walk to Waverley Station and central for all Edinburgh's main attractions. Stunning!

Room Tip: go high to avoid noise from wokrmen doing up the station

We have just returned from a short break at the Balmoral in Edinburgh and to be honest I dont normally comment, however, this time I am because if you are conisdering this hotel then do not hesitate. A fabulous setting - a genuine old style hotel but with the style and panache you would expect at a Forte hotel. The staff were so friendly, nothing was any bother and from the reception staff, concierge, restaurant and turn down staff all you ever got was a smile and a genuine greeting. We had breakfast included in our stay and that was fab, set in Hadrians' restaurant again nothing was too much trouble. We also chose to eat in Hadrians' for Valentines evening and we were not disappointed. Set right in the heart of Edinburgh just around the corner from Waverley Station you are near everything. We took a tour bus as we were only there a couple of days and that got us everywhere we wanted to see - Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, National Gallery, Royal Mile, Scottish Paliament & Arthurs Seat. Thank you so much to the Balmoral staff for a wonderful stay and if you are still wondering whether to book - just do it!!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 424 - executive double - nice views of the bridge.
