“Aside from Burj Al Arab, 7 star hotels do exist”
Reviewed 26 May 2012

As I come from Dubai, I came to discover that if any hotel deserves a 7 star rating is the Balmoral hotel in Edinburgh. From location to service and amenities, this hotel is a second to none. We were welcomed wit a tour of the hotel and it's history (120 years old). We were ( wife and daughter) accompanied to our room wish was huge. The baby got a special welcome where she had a toy box, sanitizer, water heater, cot, her own food menu and some tasty cookies, unfortunately and due to weather change, our baby fell ill and we called the reception for assistance. We didn't have to worry about a single thing, the hotel took an appointment for us with the hospital, they arranged for transport and walked with us through the whole process. A very family friendly hotel which did not fail to attend to any request. More than that, the hotel is ideally situated I. The center of Edinburgh (adjacent to the train station) and gives you access to all historical places around the city. We didn't have to take a mean of transportation during the whole stay (4 nights). We believ that this is the best experience we had in a while and I will visit Edinburgh next year just to stay in this hotel.

Just come back after 2 night stay. Upgraded to a very large suite due to anniversary with king size bed, walk in wardrobe, plus two seating areas! Beautiful bed and house keeping was a fabulous standard. Staff in balmoral bar (infact in general) were so friendly, they couldn't do enough. Super hospitality although a standard at 5* you would expect. Super location for shopping, tourist sights and cocktails. Lovely!

The service and quality of the hotel was fantastic (as you would expect!) but is it worth the normal price of the room (circa £350) probably not! We paid £180 - got a good deal through hotels.com which was worth it but the room was quite small, we were supposed to have a city view but actually had an internally facing room (which was fine for us, nice and quiet).

The room was a little on the warm side. Staff were amazingly friendly. Loved the doorman in his traditional dress!

Also had excellent food in Hadrian's bar.

We only had one night and we were working so it was a bust stay. There's something special, from the mont you arrive you know you are in a very clash place.

Our room was warm and comforting, perfect for a cold February night.

The staff were warm and friendly (try a cocktail or two and listen to the bar staff patter).

We were given a couple of lovely surprises on arrival which made the whole experience very special - an icing on the cake moment.

It's not cheap but neither are all the best things in travel.

Loved it.

Room Tip: Have a cocktail or two in the champagne bar - Wonderful!

We stayed two nights and were impressed from start to finish: the location, the impeccable service from all the staff, the room and the attention to detail. They even sent us a special congratulation gift upon hearing that my wife and I are recently married.

Free wifi in the room was offered during May, but I don't think that's a regular thing. It should be though; it is at every backpackers from Turkey to Vietnam!

The good: The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Made us feel very welcome when we arrived. Upon seeing our room and it's location we requested a change which they did very quickly and moved our luggage.
The not so good: The hotel is just too expensive for what you get. The rooms are average and were really not that much 'more' than what we had in other hotels during our stay which were not nearly as expensive. We had an early departure and the only food service available was through room service. It arrived late, cold, and half the order was missing. By the time the other part arrived we had to leave to go to the airport. For a hotel that charges what they charge this was unacceptable.
Yes it is right downtown however major construction is going on all around the hotel and while it is not the hotel's fault getting too and from the hotel in a vehicle (private or taxi) is a challenge. I don't know how long the construction will last but while it is underway it should be considered. Also keep in mind that if you have an early flight it is a 30 to 40 minute cab ride to the airport.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms on the 200 level. It is the same floor as the meeting rooms.

Dear Guest,

Firstly may I thank you for your positive comments about The Balmoral's friendly and accommodating staff during your recent visit to the hotel. Our warm Scottish hospitality is something we take great pride in, however I was disappointed to read your comments regarding your accommodation and departure experience. Each of the rooms in the hotel is unique in terms of size and decor and whilst many of our guests enjoy the simplicity and understated luxury of the design and decor, we understand that this is very much a matter of personal taste and I am sorry that we failed to meet your expectations on this occasion. Perhaps a different category of room would better suit your needs. I would be delighted to update your guest profile to reflect your preferences should you wish to share them with me. In response to your disappointing room service experience, I would like to offer my sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused and will be looking into this incident in further detail. I would be most grateful if you could provide the dates of your stay in order for me to look into this for you.

We welcome all guest feedback and I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your comments, as these will help us to continue to improve and provide the 5 star service that The Balmoral is renowned for. Please don't hesitate to contact me personally to discuss this matter further.

Yours Sincerely

We stayed on the first night of our honeymoon, and after an early start and a long drive we arrived at the door, my Husband went to find out about parking but didnt get far, as the excellent doorman came back to the car with him, took the luggage and the car keys and said they would sort it! (£27 for valet parking but worth it for piece of mind) We were shown to reception and were welcomed by a fantastic receptionist who immediately used our married name (important to newlyweds) and she said that we had been upgraded free of charge to a castle view room free of charge and the room was ready - perfect! We got to the room to find a fantastic plate of macaroons with piped chocolate saying Happy Honeymoon! Talk about wow factor. The room was spacious, comfortable and luxurious and had a walk in wardrobe (with full length mirror) and the bathroom was great - heated floor and great amenities. We went out in Edinburgh that night and came back to a rose petal turndown - it was simply amazing! I cannot comment on breakfast as we didnt have it - we were on a room only rate but if it is anywhere near as good as the rest of the hotel then it will be no doubt wonderful. We arranged with concierge to have the car back for our chosen time as we went to explore Edinburgh and sure enough it was there, bang on time and with the luggage ready in the boot. I cannot praise this hotel highly enough and would reccomend it to anyone travelling to Edinburgh. It may seem expensive, but the service is 5* and it is well worth every penny.
