Reviewed 25 February 2013

Stayed here overnight for my birthday. The hotel was lovely, right on princes street which made it handy for shopping & next door to the train station.Noise level from our room & bar/restaurant was fine so must have good insulation. However had a view of a brick wall out of the windows.
The food in Hadrian's Brasserie was really nice & all staff were friendly & efficient.
Our room was huge, but the bathroom seemed small compared to the size of the rest of it.The big let down was the bed.It did look like a super king but was two singles zipped together with no mattress topper to help.I hardly got any sleep that night because the mattress was far to hard, fine if you like that but I have joint problems so need a mattress with some give in it.One of the worse beds I have ever "slept" in,otherwise would have had a 4 rating.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review, sharing your recent experience of The Balmoral. Your comments and high rating of the service element of your stay are especially pleasing as we pride ourselves on our warm Scottish hospitality. I am also pleased to read that you were impressed with hotel in general, as well as the location and quality of the food in our Brasserie.

I am most sorry to learn, however, that your stay was impaired by your discomfort and lack of sleep. All our mattresses were recently replaced to ensure the highest quality for our guests. The mattresses were selected following feedback and consultation with our guests but we appreciate that mattress preferences are particularly personal, even more so due to your joint problems. We have updated our records to reflect your preference for a softer mattress and I have also shared your comments regarding the zip-link with my Executive Housekeeper.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss your stay personally and can be contacted one the number below at your convenience.

Yours sincerely

Another stay at this fabulous hotel and it never fails to amaze me how great all the staff are from the doorman Peter to the concierge, to the reception staff.
Even though I am Scottish and Edinburgh is only a train ride away I still feel as if I am on holiday each time I say there.
An absolute must if you are able to treat yourself, well worth every penny.

Room Tip: Room 420 was awesome a junior suite with a fabulous view of the Castle.

We spent a lovely couple of hours on a freezing cold afternoon in December here. We wanted to get out of the cold and fancied afternoon tea, and just turned up at The Balmoral last minute with no booking. The staff were very approachable and accommodating, taking us upstairs to the gorgeous mezzanine area, as the main dining area was full. Well, this turned out to be in our favour as we had our pick of various sofas, seating, overlooking the grand foyer which had the most fabulous Christmas tree! And we had the area all to ourselves, sharing it only with the harp player (beautiful!). We also had our own waiter who was very attentive and tried to get us to take extra cake home! The tea, scones, cake and sandwiches were very nice - not the best I've had - but good nonetheless. A lovely way to while away an afternoon in a very crowded city at peak Christmas shopping time! Not cheap (about £25 each) but a real stress reliever.

We stayed here on the 9th February for a one night stay as a treat.

On arrival Concierge and Reception staff were very professional and very welcoming. The Reception is stunning.

The room was modern and a good size.

We ate out as were meeting friends but returned around 11 for late drinks in the bar which was lovely and again the waiting staff were professional and welcoming.

We arranged breakfast in the room in the morning which arrived on time and was a great end to the stay to chill out on a Sunday before checking out.

A lovely hotel with lovely staff.

Always a winner and without doubt our favourite hotel in Edunburgh. Visited just before Christmas to do some shopping and had a lovely stay. Breakfast is always magnificent. The cocktail bar has a great atmosphere and the Pool/Spa are a wonderful bonus for a Hotel in such a great location. Only let downs were the £5 charge to get an ice bucket, the lack of free Internet and the ill informed receptionist who couldn't really give us much information about New Years packages and what was still available. Perhaps a lost sale there..... Valet parking not cheap either, but on balance maybe worth it for taking the hassle out of getting there with luggage and leaving with 5 times as many bags as we came with. Of course we will be back!

And that includes the bathroom ... super comfy beds, extremely helpful staff. Two restaurants and a beautiful spa. We were celebrating HIS birthday so we upgraded and our room looked on to Edinburgh Castle and the Scott monument straight ahead with the Mound and Scotland's National galleries below. It is situated right next to Waverly Station so easy for transport. Parking is NOT included so if you bring a car, parking is an additional charge. However, the kilted and be-caped concierge (a very welcoming John while we visited) sorts all that out and will even talk you in through the new-ish road lay-out if necessary. Food in Hadrian's, the brasserie, was delicious, and the wines by the glass were amongst the best I have tasted. There are two Chileans - a Merlot, Gran Hacienda and the even better Luis Philip Lot 24 Carmenere and a Rioja, Banda Azul and a D Reynaud Croze Hermitage. And of course lots more. There was also a Michelin starred restaurant, Number 1, which we didn't try but the menu and the prices looked like exceptional value. We had a few minor glitches (keycards that didn't work, and a tv handset that didn't function) but the very helpful staff were quick to remedy these. Booking is recommended for certain treatments at the spa and also for Number 1. Oh, and we mentioned the birthday in passing and were delighted with the little surprise platter of macaroons on a decorated Happy Birthday plate that the very on-the-ball receptionist had organised to be placed in our room. We would definitely go back

Room Tip: If you want the view, be sure to mention it. We forgot , but we were lucky.
