“Afternoon Tea”
Reviewed 7 December 2013

Have just been treated (by our daughter) to a loverly birthday afternoon tea in the Palm Court at the Balmoral Hotel. Staff were very attentive with family presents laid out on our table. Service was excellent as was the afternoon tea. Excellent value in the new Palm Court room. Will be back for more!

Our family stayed in two rooms at the Balmoral in November and once again, the experience was 5 star. The larger room had a generous seating area for the 4 of us and lovely views of the city. I would like to give a special thanks to the staff of the hotel's restaurant Hadrians. On several occasions, our needs were rather complicated, but they rose to the challenge with smiles and great service. The food was exceptional - particularly the lunch dish of smoked Haddock with poached egg & steamed spinach - all agreed it was the best dish we had in our 4 days in Edinburgh. From the reception to the door men, everyone at the Balmoral provided friendy, professional service. Our second stay at the hotel exceeded our every expectation.

Room Tip: Corner suites are spacious with lovely views

The staff were lovely, the rooms clean, spotless bathroom and nearly everything this type of hotel should be. However we found the lighting in the entrance foyer cold and unwelcoming. It was like entering a mausoleum. On the left was a fake fire and then a great space with nothing. The reception desk was hidden on the left. It was all very sparse and I guess minimalist but not warm and welcoming. There was no buzz in the entrance. Even the Christmas tree was severe. You never saw another guest and the bar was shut for an event the second night we were there so we went to Hadrians brasserieswhere the service was very slow even though the waiters were nice and the prices reasonable.
One other thing. There were no coffee and tea making facilities in the room. And no directory of services so we didn't know that they were available on request. I wonder if this is just for the advance cheaper room booking which we had.My husband had to go down to reception and enquire which was a bit difficult as it made us look as if we should know and were perhaps asking for too much given our cut price (still expensive) deal! Everything was all brought to us within 5 minutes after he had asked however. But why did we have to ask for what is normal in British hotels?
I may stay there agin but not totally sure.

Beautiful hotel, lovely bedroom, and lovely facilities. Was only there for an overnight stay but really enjoyed it. The only thing that did spoil it, was when we checked out we were handed a bill for laundry for a cost of £78!!!! Don't know where they got this invoice from??? however the receptionist just ripped it up and said sorry.

Room Tip: I think any room in this hotel would be amazing.

We stayed here on the 14 th of November in room 608, the room had a fantastic view of the Castle and Princess street and we were grateful Elvira (lovely and friendly) had allocated us this room as it was a first wedding anniversary treat for us. The room was lovely and clean and the marble bathroom was very nice too. We liked that it was fresh milk for in room tea and coffee, alot of other 4/5 star hotels should learn from this as uht milk is not nice. We did visit the bar £11 for each glass of wine, eek, I do think this is unjustified even for this hotel. We also visited the spa, which was lovely but there was paint work going on at the side of the pool, which ruined the experience for us both as there were sheets lying about, men in overalls cutting about and a strong smell of paint, surely this should have been done on the night shift when pool is closed as at £214 for 1 night this is unacceptable. We would love to return but would make sure no work was going on in spa as this is why we booked this hotel in the first instance.

Make no mistake, this is a lovely hotel, with great rooms and generally attentive, helpful staff, and a great breakfast, but so it should be at these prices. What shouldn't happen is waiting 20 minutes to get served in the bar - lots of staff on duty but seemingly unable to get themselves organised, and this did not seem to be an isolated incident. The whisky bar is better, but has a less extensive range (unless you want a whisky, in which case your luck's in, they have over 400 different types!) and is still very pricey. Would I stay again? Absolutely, but I'd probably do my eating and drinking elsewhere.
