Popped in to meet a friend, stopped for coffee, service was first class. Staff were excellent. Wonderful atmosphere. Plan to go back after the New Year for lunch and if today's visit was anything to go by it should be first class.

Wife and I stayed for 4 days at the Balmoral. We took advantage of the hotel's Christmas City Break package (25% discount and breakfast). The breakfast is well worth it, so spending the little extra is money well spent. Lots to choose from and very delicious.
The staff is the first item on my list that rises to the top about this hotel. From the doorman to the front desk to the bell hops to every member in every area of the hotel - they were all wonderful. Courteous, helpful, and friendly. I can't say enough about how great the staff was at making our stay pleasant. They did not need to "bend over backwards" to make us feel welcome or provide for us - they just did it.
The hotel facilities are very nice. Take note - it is a fairly old hotel (opened in 1902), but it has been well kept. If you are picky about little chips of paint or an old elevator, then go stay at the Holiday Inn. We did not have the chance to visit the pool or the spa, but other guests informed us that they were quite nice. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms are very clean and kept very well by housekeeping.
The hotel is in a good location between the Royal Mile and the shopping on Princess Street. It is also next door to the train station and just a short walk (10 minutes) to Edinburgh Castle and most of the other attractions.
The only "other" whatsoever I had for this hotel was for my wife. In the classic bedrooms there are no outlets to plug in a hairdryer in the bathroom. This can be done in the bedroom and there is a mirror with it, but if your wife is used to using the dryer over the bathroom sink, then she will be disappointed. Again, just a minor adjustment to habit - nothing to complain about.
Will definitely recommend to my family and friends and will be staying again when we visit Edinburgh.

Room Tip: On check-in, the front desk will do wonders for you if you ask (reservations, recommendations, anyth...

Right off the train station. Very convenient. Walking distance from restaurants and bars. The Whiskey bar in the hotel has an amazing selection of single malts. The entire hotel has a nice ambience. Rooms are very spacious. High ceilings.

Room Tip: I had a room which was like a one bedroom apartment with an ensuite bathroom and a walk-in closet. W...

Had my a family members wedding held at this beautiful hotel. Yes everything was vastly expensive but it was worth it. Spa, swimming pool area was very lush too.
Breakfast was delicious, staff were attentive, settings very perfect for this time of year (Christmas), but we had many rooms booked, a handful of the guests did complain about the hygiene in the rooms (not expected if you are paying a small fortune), and the bride herself had to ask to be moved as the room provided at first was too small! The bed area (in some rooms) was really close to the door, so you could hear other guest in the corridor, which was a very strange set up. Our double bed was soft on one side and hard on the other!!!!!
If this does happen bear in mind, staff were very helpful to reallocate rooms to suit your needs.
On the whole, a great experience with a few minor hiccups that were dealt with positively.

Room Tip: Beautiful views the higher up you are. Corner suites are usually the family rooms.

Great hotel, lovely large room, superb meal at No. 1. Only two issues (a) need iron/ironing board in room otherwise need to have items pressed by hotel (2) no tea/coffee making facilities in the room - you need to request this.
