“High Tea- Better Than the Ritz”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

For my first trip to England and Scotland, I had to try high tea. I first went to the Ritz in England and was extremely underwhelmed. My Mom's best friend suggested that when we were in Scotland, that we try the Balmoral High Tea experience and boy was she right! This place is beyond excellent. Not only was the food and tea amazing, the service was impeccable. Our server could not have been more gracious, knowledgable and charming. I highly recommend coming here. It was one of the highlights of the trip!

Room Tip: Do not skip high tea!

We stayed last week. Room was spotless. Lovely atmosphere the place has got. We did however feel the staff were a little unattentive at times but, considering the size of the hotel, this is understandable. We would return.

This was one of the nicest hotels I've enjoyed in all my travels. The staff was fabulous and willing to do anything to make our stay most pleasant. The breakfast which was included in our room rate was delicious and the rooms were large and well appointed. Wifi worked well, the beds were comfortable, including delicious linens and down pillows. The only quirky thing was the shower, which required a very large step in/out and could be difficult for some.

We stayed for one night in a normal double room to attend a wedding. The service at the hotel is extremely efficient but feels a little impersonal. Not bad but not as impressive as the Dorchester in London.

The room was nicely furnished but fairly small and the bathroom was a good size but a little cold. The shower was in the bath tub and the tub was very deep. Not particularly comfortable to access.

The concierge parking was efficient but at an additional price of £27 for overnight it did feel excessive.

Bar prices are high as you might expect. We have stayed at the sister hotel The Lowry in Manchester and it just felt more impressive than the Balmoral.

Finally the breakfast, which was a self service buffet. I don't see how any purported 5 star hotel can't at least provide table service! Fried eggs on a warm plate, please no!

Room Tip: Choose a higher floor and ask for a Castle view

BalmoralEdinburgh, General Manager at The Balmoral Hotel, responded to this review, 3 July 2014
Dear Guest,

Thank you for choosing to stay with us during your recent visit to Edinburgh. I am pleased to read that you had previously enjoyed such an impressive experience at our sister hotel, The Lowry.
We offer a wide variety of rooms, varying in size, aspect and decoration. I am sorry that on this occasion we fell short of your expectations. Whilst many of our guests appreciate the deep baths, we recognise that these can be difficult for some guests and would be happy to allocate a more suitable room upon request.
I do regret that some other aspects of your stay failed to meet your personal expectations in terms of value for money. I sincerely hope that in spite of this you may consider returning to The Balmoral in the future and would ask that you contact me directly on such occasion if I can be of any assistance in arranging your stay.

Yours sincerely

Franck X Arnold

We travel to Edinburgh regularly for family as well as business reasons and so far this is the best hotel experience we've had over the past 15 years. This trip was for business reasons as a couple and was organised (and funded) for us. Location is very central on Princes Street and our room was on the 5th floor overlooking the street - too noisy to sleep with window open but very quiet with window closed and air con. Spacious room with high ceiling and very large, comfortable bed. Have to say that first impressions of room were that it was a bit grubby (carpet, dusty surface on desk, long curly hair protruding from under bedside lamp...) but bathroom clean enough, if a little cramped. The service is where we thought the Balmoral had the edge: met as we pulled up outside the hotel and valet parking offered immediately, luggage carried and check-in efficient with room ready early. Breakfast staff also attentive with orders taken and brought promptly - food quality was what I would expect for a 5 star hotel but not outstanding. Concierge service has to be highly commended for getting me out of a muddle with a pair of wire cutters! There was one glitch on the first day when one of us needed a sandwich lunch to be taken up to a meeting room and the member of staff struggled to understand where the Carron Suite was but he persevered and got there in the end. All in all, a solid hotel with beautiful architecture, great location and high level of service.

Room Tip: Choose room 5th floor upwards for less street noise and better views.

Stayed in the balmoral for our week in Scotland and it was fantastic! Amazing scottish experience, rooms were amazing and couldn't have asked for better service. Quite expensive but you get what you pay for! Highly recommend it!

My friends and I stayed for one night at the Balmoral, both of us booking superior rooms. The rooms were fine, very clean and well appointed. However the hotel appears to operate a two-tier system when it comes to the 5* frills with some customers more deserving of complimentary extras than others. My friends did very well and received a complimentary basket of fruit, a souvenir tin of shortbread and a turn down service. I apparently, warranted non of these. And to add insult to injury, they tried to charge me double for breakfast.

My advice would be, stay here for the excellent location but don't waste your money on a room upgrade. You might not get what you thought you were paying for.
