Owner description: Eat walk Edinburgh offer two Food walking tours. One explores Edinburgh's Old & New towns and the other the lower half of the Royal Mile called the Canongate. On each of these tours you will visit unusual/hidden restaurants, bars and shops. There will be five food tastings and three drink tastings on the tour. The guide will talk about the history of the area as you walk between venues. The Old & new Town tour (1pm-4.30pm) which has five food stops with a Edinburgh Raspberry Gin, Scottish beer and a single cask malt whisky tasting ensuring you will not need to worry about dinner in the evening. The Canongate tour (10am-1pm) enjoys six stops including a Bloody Mary cocktail and breakfast canapes to get the tour off and running. By the end there will be no need for lunch. The Old & New town tour was recommended in BBC Good Food Magazine as a "Don't miss" thing to do in Edinburgh. Delicious magazine also has it down as a must do.

We enjoyed our tour, Our guide Ian, was very informative.
As we strolled through Edinburgh en route to our food stops Ian brought the past and recent history of Edinburgh to life.
We recommend this tour,

We were excited to do this tour given the great reviews... but it cost $79.64 per person for 5 places that weren't of any historic value nor had any special cuisine. We live in LA and don't mind spending money on experiences or good cuisine. This however, was not worth it.

I was just looking through the pictures posted by others and we didn't do have a cheese tour nor some of the other goodies... was it just our tour??

Our guide was also quite pessimistic; not sure if he was having a bad day but we've been on some other walking tours in Edinburgh and those guides were much more informative and livelier. Food we've had at other restaurants in Edinburgh were also much tastier (Use tripadvisor or yelp! Don't rely on preset places such as this!)

Hi

I am really sorry you didn't enjoy the tour, we do try to deliver the same quality of tour to everyone that takes one.

We do vary stops on the tour but have the same tastings so can't quite understand why you didn't have a cheese tasting.

Regarding the photos on the Tripadvisor page the majority are taken by people on the tour and represent what they see and taste. The more recent photos are the most useful to people planning on taking the tour as The Tripadvisor photos span the 5 years the tour has been running and some venues have changed. For example there is a photo of a cheese display in Ian Mellis cheese shop that we used to visit in 2011-12 but we no longer stop there but instead have a cheese tasting with a beer/wine in a restaurant later on the tour.

I can't work out from your tripadvisor name who you are, so can't contact you directly as obviously we would like to resolve what was an unhappy tour for you.

I will contact you via Tripadvisor but if you could please contact me directly that would be appreciated.

Alan was our guide today in the somewhat changeable weather. You can tell he is passionate about food, the walking tour was fantastic, he told us about history while also pointing out restaurants and bars for us to try. Alan was flexible, professional and very friendly, would recommend to anyone!

Thanks for taking the time to write this review.

We will always try and suggest other places to drink or eat along the way or in other parts of the city.

Alan was an engaging host as he led us through the city stopping off at a wide range of different eateries to sample the local wares. We had a mix of British and American visitors on our tour and enjoyed the conversations as well as the food. The portions at each location are not large but when added up, they pretty much make a full meal and we just grazed on a few snacks in the evening after our tour. Because of the heavy rain, we didn't dwell on the sights between the stops but that was just a small disappointment which couldn't be helped.

Recommended!

Thanks for writing this review, it's much appreciated.

We do always go ahead with the tour, whatever the weather(!), with a table reserved at each stop giving a chance to sit down and dry off slightly.

Myself and my boyfriend went on the eat walk tour having never been to Edinburgh before. Alan's extensive knowledge of the old and new town was incredible. He was very friendly, polite and informed us of lots of different places to explore, from quirky bars, cafes & restaurants to popular tourist attractions and exciting events happening all over the city.

The food and drink we sampled along the tour was outstanding, and Alan would always entertain us with fascinating stories and information about the places we visited.

I would highly recommend this tour to anybody wanting to know more about this beautiful city, who enjoys some seriously top nosh and who just wants a fantastic day out!
