We chose the Links because it was about half way between the city center and some family we were visiting.

The good: Beautiful view of the park from our gigantic window, friendly staff, good Scottish breakfast, bar open to guests 24 hours/day (and in a city that seems to go to bed early, that was nice...especially on New Year's)

The bad: The walls were scratched up in the room, twin beds were put together to create the large single bed we requested, but there was no pad on top, so essentially we had a crack down the middle of our bed, staff had a lot of trouble transferring phone calls up to the room, it seems like the reception person also works/spends time in the bar/restaurant area so there isn't always someone there

The ugly (or smelly): The bathroom did not smell good. We couldn't tell if it was the loud toilet that was holding in the smell, or if there was a bigger problem.

I was a bit hesitant in booking this hotel as it seemed that people either liked it or hated it and then read (after booking) that it was a hostel, which would be fine if I was in my early 20's again! Anyway, this hotel was just fine. It was a bit worn, but clean. The staff were friendly and helpful. The double room we had was large and very tidy- the bathroom was large, modern and clean. A Scottish Breakfast was included and was also quite nice. The Links is about 10 minutes to the centre of town by taxi or about a 20-25 minute walk through the meadows. The only drawback was that there is a pub in the hotel and seems to be a favorite of the local university students so it can get quite loud! We had no noise issues, however, our room was located in the building next to the pub. I can see why people would complain about the noise if their room was in the same building let alone directly above the pub! Overall, the Links was a good budget place to stay and would definitely stay there again if we went back to Edinbugh. One suggestion: request a room that isn't in the same building as the pub and you should be fine!

Basic, basic, basic !! Dirty corridors, old shabby carpets, and freezing bedroom. Heating didn't work, no hot water for shower in the morning and thank the lord I didn't want breakfast. Passed through 'breakfast room', grasy tables and general feeling of uncleanliness. You would need to be aware of this before paying room rate of £78. You would think expectations should perhaps be not so high as £78 is a 'bit of a deal' but other friends, staying in a hotel not too far away paid £80 for a superb, wonderfully clean, breakfast for a king Hotel and I felt badly let down with my lot.

We recently stayed at The Links for three nights during a trip to Scotland. To begin with, I can say that for the price, we had a big room with a nice view over the park. The staff was also very helpful in making dinner and touring suggestions and providing any help we needed. However, the room was not in great condition (broken showerhead, piping), and the lack of a lift and conjoined buildings made getting to the room a tedious process.

It has been documented by previous reviewers that there is a fairly busy bar on the ground level, though it did not affect our stay (we were directly above it and even slept with the window open). I would suggest that light sleepers should take caution though.

As for location, the hotel is within walking distance of the more touristy and heavily travelled parts of the city (castle, royal mile, etc.), but it is a healthy walk. Since we were there at the start of the festivals, we appreciated being able to get away from the madness and we were still able to find several great restaurants in the area.

If you’re working with a budget and want to stay away from the “touristy” part of the city, this is a great place.

Arrived to find a large clean room with three single beds. There were only two of us so we were spoilt for choice! Beds very comfortable, which is what you need after long days walking, and enjoying all Edinburgh has to offer. Be warned that you may have to tackle the stairs. We were on the 3rd floor and it can be quite a climb for those less able. Breakfast was included in the price and this was superb. Staff very friendly and make you welcome. Tea and coffee facilities available in the room. We had a TV but it only had channel 5. Not bothered though as we were out all day and at night too tired to bother switching it on. However, those who need to keep updated can watch Sky TV downstairs on the numerous plasma TV's. One downside is the lack of car park. You have to pay to park outside between 08:30-17:30 and it costs £1 per hour. There are traffic wardens everywhere so you run the risk of a ticket! It also cost £1.60 per hour to park in the centre. Saying that it is only a 15 min walk to the Royal Mile and t(here is a lovely chip and put golf course in the neighbouring park to enjoy). If you can, avoid taking the car.

Nice little hotel, room was big and clean, the breakfast was lovely and the bar (which was next door, but residents could enter via hotel) was also good, friendly staff and a mixed bag of locals, students,(both local and from abroad) as well as having sky sports and a good selection of beers plus a good menu that served till 22.00. Bar was open till 01.00 for non-residents and 24/7 for residents, the hotel is only a 10 min walk up to the Royal Mile and from there you cant go wrong.
I would recommend this hotel and would try there first when i go back again in the future.

We stayed at the Links hotel this past weekend, and it was not at all what we expected from a 3 star hotel. First of all, I think the primary business of the Links is a pub, so attention is clearly not on the hotel, which is apparent in the decor and upkeep.

Our heater wasn't working and no one knew how to fix it. When we sat on the bed, we could hear/feel the springs. The carpet looked dirty and the nightstand had a cigarette burn mark on it.

After less than an hour in the room, we fled to see the city, and to inquire about other hotels. Luckily we were able to find something else. We spent the night, and must admit, the breakfast was very nice the following morning.

We then told Kate at the front desk that we decided to leave, she was very pleasant and understanding and gave us no trouble. As stated above, the staff here is extremely nice and courteous. I just wish the property was kept up better, as the location is also quite nice.
