“Book when offer available if you can otherwise you will only end up being disappointed”
Reviewed 29 January 2013

Stayed here last weekend and I cannot only say this review will show that this hotel is a bit of a mixed bad.

Reception Staff one of the main positives of this Hotel.

Yes the Public Areas are nice and clean although some of the bar staff need to have some manners and common sense. There was a leaflet in our room saying that if you showed your Priority Club card at the bar you would receive 10% of your drinks. When I questioned this the young guy behind the bar said "That offer isn't running any more". I said "But it says it in the room". "Well it isn't running anymore". When I asked him why the leaflet was still in the room he just looked at me as if I had 4 heads!

This being a 4 start hotel you would expect at least a bed side table either side of the bed. Well, unless there was a magic button to press there wasn't in our room. This being a King Double Bedded Feature Room (when I queried about the "Feature" I was told that the "Feature" was the King Size Bed! - go figure that one out!). There were light switched behind the pillows as to squeeze the king size bed into the room they had to removed one of the bed side tables to accomodate it. So every time I put my hand behind my pillow or moved the pillow the lights kept going on/off. Also there was a zip not only down the middle of the bed but also down the middle of the thin duvet as well!

Don't enter the bathroom with a headache! The tiles are so 80's they make you dizzy and sick after a while.

Don’t even get me started on Sampans, the in-house Oriental Restaurant. What a waste of money. Bland food and not even a fortune cookie when paying the bill! (Go across the road. The Chinese there was so busy people were queuing to get in!).

I have a feeling we were put in this room as we only paid £20.12 per room per night using a Priority Club Offer. Maybe (hopefully) if we'd paid full price the room may not have been so depressing.

We were really looking forward to few nights away. I won't be rushing back lets put it that way.

The AA definitely need to revisit this Hotel and the 4 star rating it currently has.

The location of this hotel was perfect for our visit to Edinburgh as the main purpose for our trip was to go to the zoo, which was right next door! Although it did cost us quite a bit travelling on the bus and in taxis into Edinburgh city centre. We thought the hotel was good value for money, especially when you compared the facilities to the other hotels in the area! We made full use of the sauna, jacuzzi and swimming pool; which was great! The rooms were minimal and clean, although the furniture was quite out dated! The kettle was terrible and took ages to boil, and the bath didn't look too nice, but we weren't too bothered! The service was very pleasant; the ladies at reception were very welcoming and smiley, the cleaners were nice and helpful too! Overall we had a really good weekend away, very glad we chose this hotel, especially for the leisure facilities on offer!

My wife & I stay in Edinburgh often, usually at HI Express's or Premier Inn's. However we reckon that a stay at this Holiday Inn is a bit of a treat in comparison, so we make a point of choosing this HI if there is a deal on.
The rooms are always quiet & spacious, either with a view south over the hills or north toward the zoo (the latter may mean being woken up by jungle noises at 7-8am). They are the usual HI rooms - comfortable, clean, but well used. We find the beds rather good, and of course there is a bath unlike HI Express.
Breakfast is usual HI help yourself which really suits us as we rarely eat again until that evening. Restaurant food - only tried once and found it mediocre and expensive.
Access elsewhere is easy by bus - Edinburgh buses are really easy (and clean too).
Two downsides for us:
1. Internet access is costly - its time this hotel caught up
2. Parking spaces are restricted & narrow - so if you are proud of a large car or dont want another parked up against yours, arrive after 4pm and use the zoo car park that is just a stair case away from the hotel.
We look forward to being back here.

Room Tip: See above - either view over hills or delightful jungle noises (whooping gibbons I think) from the z...

It's a good hotel but nothing fantastic. Getting to city centre is a 15minute bus ride or a ten minute taxi (£10), the bus is really easy, there is a stop right outside on both sides of the road.
The hotel offers a great offer with the zoo, (which is next door, less than 20yards away) where you can go in cheaper after 3, which is all you need really if you want to see the pandas. The overall cleanliness could have been better, and our room didn't come with enough coffee for our liking.

Stayed here this past weekend for my mothers birthday, staff very attentive, The bed had lumps in it though :( . The bar and restaurant are, like said before, a bit bland and soulless, but all in all a really good experience without paying for a five star.

Its a bit far away from city centre too, something I never realised when i booked.

Room Tip: The staff will help you, they are brilliant.

Have stayed at this Holiday Inn many times in the last few years and its always very good, with a welcoming, helpful reception. The bar is a bit sterile but the staff there are always friendly and although it's a bit far from the city centre will definitely be using it again next time.

This is a great Hotel with good food, lovely accomodation and good leisure facilities just a few minutes from the centre of Edinburgh with a bus stop just outside the Hotel and adjacent to Edinburgh zoo. The bedrooms are beautifully clean with adjoining rooms available for families and fantastic views of the Pentlands (ask for an upper, front facing room). Breakfast is plentiful and varied (tea comes hotter than the coffee) and the meals in the bar area were tasty if a little pricey. There is loads of parking and the parking is free. Staff are very helpful and pleasant. We did have one problem with a do not disturb sign being ignored (a case of poor English rather than deliberate discourtesy I think and the Hotel have promised to look into their staff training so a good response to the complaint). We have stayed a few times and it is generally a thoroughly good hotel. Look at sites like Travel Republic if you want the best deals.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the upper floors at the front - stunning views.
