We paid £97 for 2 of us to stay a night at the Hotel Etterick, this was booked in January 13,
so it wasn't that they were given short notice.
On arrival booking in took quite a while for someone to appear at the reception desk.
We were allocated a tiny little box room on the second floor that only had a skylight window [which was closed and too high for us to reach it].
The temperature in the room was immense, and we were only supplied with a fan, which was of little or no use.
The room was tiny and cramped. The bathroom was little more that a broom cupboard size, fitted with a [noisy] saniflow toilet and sink that you constantly bumped into when trying to move around and a sliding door that had no internal handle and just by luck didn't shut properly.
There were no complimentry biscuits supplied with the tea & coffee.
I asked at reception to be moved but was told there were no rooms available.
The friendliness and helpfullness of the staff are their saving grace.
The breakfast was ok, but not what I would call a full scottish though! Although Haggis was offered on the menu we didn't get any or even offered an explanation as to it's absence. Overall I would not rush to recommend this hotel to anyone unless you are guaranteed a decent room with windows.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first floor

The hotel was clean. Outside of that it was a disappointment. When we went to check in, we waited at the front desk for about 10 awkward minutes before anyone came to help us. The decor was depressing and outdated. It appeared they went to local garage sales and randomly picked out the furniture. The carpet in our rooms had visible stains. The breakfast was okay but nothing to rave about. Overall we were not impressed and probably would not return.

You'll get a good Scottish breakfast, cooked to order which you can enjoy in the conservatory style dining room. The hotel is located in a quiet part of Morningside, relatively far from Princes Street and the town centre for walking there, but within easy reach by bus. The staff are helpful and the gardens and hotel and well maintained. It is an old house, modified into a hotel, so the rooms are varied. Those on the first floor are the original rooms of the house and have muolded plaster cielings and some have great views across to Fife across the Firth of Forth but they'll cost you more. Executive rooms are in an extension and are more modern. Standard rooms are under the roof and will feel cramped if you are tall. If you are staying in one of them, take care to ask about what you are getting.

Room Tip: Ask about specific rooms when booking. Avoid rooms under the roof if you are tall or feel claustrop...

I had stayed here for just one night along with my friends. The location is good, convenient to reach and easy to locate. I liked the courtesy of Hotel staff, breakfast was good. They could just improve on the quality of locks. I was trying to lock the door and the knob itself came out of the door :(.

Room Tip: Quality of door could be improved.

The Royal Ettrick Hotel is outside Edinburgh and we chose this location on purpose when we researched our short trip to Scotland. It is a grand old house transformed into a hotel with a bar, a dining area and an outside terrace where one can also dine. It's in a quiet neighborhood and the bus stop is only a block away. The area is beautiful so we walked a short distance to a park and the old canal where houseboats are now anchored. Breakfast was good and I had my first taste of haggis there---surprisingly good when toned down for breakfast. The staff was helpful and pleasant. Our room had no window and the two skylights were not functioning even after we mentioned this to the front desk. One over the bed wouldn't close, making for an early wakeup, and the other wouldn't open, making it dark. Still it was a good experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a window.

Having stayed at the ettrick a few times I felt I should write a wee review. The hotel itself is an grand old former house which has been tastefully converted into a hotel , the rooms are in comfortable, breakfast is good. The food served in the in house bar/ restaurant is excellent and great value. On site parking is a bonus other the city centre only a short distance.

We only stayed at this hotel for one night and I wish we'd booked for longer.

On arrival we were greeted by a friendly lad on reception who said our room was not quite ready (we had arrived half an hour early for check in..) so we thought we'd have a drink in their bar area, and ended up having lunch as well. The lunch menu is terrific and the food is fab, much better than other hotels we have stayed in before. After lunch we went up to room 6, which is on the top floor. There wasn't a lift and so I think the top flight of stairs may be slightly difficult for someone older - however this wasn't an issue to us. The room was quite warm when we got up there, but we opened the window and also found a fan available so this was fine.

The room was clean, the bathroom was adequate and also clean and tidy - we also had a small walk-in wardrobe which was a pleasant change to the usual tiny wardrobes found in hotels! The only negative find about the hotel room was the lack of electrical sockets - there were only two accessible ones along with one hidden behind the telly on the wall. This was a bit of a problem for us but we coped!

We went out for the day and got back in at around 10.30pm - at this stage we found the parking to be quite limited but managed to squeeze into a spot. I was grateful to find any hotel with free parking though to be honest, so this was still a huge bonus. And when we got in we went for a drink in the hotel bar which had great staff and a large selection of drinks.

The beds were very comfortable with soft sheets and I slept soundly - one other thing I will mention is an odd tapping/dripping noise coming from the radiator at 7am the next morning, again this wasn't an issue for us as we were already awake and getting ready but for anyone wanting a lie in this would be really irritating. The shower was hot and powerful, and a hairdryer was supplied in the room as well. Don't expect too much from the hairdryer though, it is a impossibly small travel dryer - but what else should I have expected?

Breakfast was fantastic - they offer a complimentary breakfast with choice of cereals and fresh fruit with organic yoghurt along with a full Scottish breakfast including haggis and a choice of how you would like your eggs cooked, which I loved!

Overall, a fantastic hotel for a short getaway to the city of Edinburgh - great quiet location, a nice bar on an evening and friendly, helpful staff. I would definitely stay again.
