Residence Inn Edinburgh

Reviewed 29 July 2012

After thirty five years of traveling through Europe, South America, the USA and Africa I have to
consider the Residence Inn in Edinburgh one of the best managed hotels where I have stayed..
In July of 2012 my wife and I spent 12 days in this excellent hotel. The service and attention of
every individual from the general manager Colin down to the cleaning ladies was truly impressive not to leave out the attentiveness and efficiency of the desk staff in the reception area.
The breakfast although was not elegant, was complete, well organized and healthy. It lacked
nothing least of all personnel on hand to be of service. The rooms were cleaned efficiently and rarely did we have to request a forgotten item.

The menu was limited in the evening, however there were snacks and light food available for those in need.

I truly congratulate Marriott for a job well done..It was a pleasure for us to stay at your Residence Inn and I highly recommend it to anyone for the above mentioned reasons as well
as for it's outstanding location and walking distance to the main shopping areas..

Thank you Marriott.

Sincerely. K Lewis

Room Tip: I suggest a corner room on the end..Seems more spacious.

We loved the hotel's location, just two blocks from the Royal Mile, and about half way between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood House; it just doesn't get better than that. It's on the university campus in a redeveloped area; hotel is brand new, but in a quite area, although there are several pubs, cafes and sandwich shops nearby. For those who can't bear to be away, there's a Starbucks in the next building and another a block away.

The regular rooms in this Residence Inn are cozier than RI regulars are used to, but there's still a kitchenette in the entry, a good sized bathroom and a bedroom that's big enough for two, but I cannot imagine where they'd put a cot or a crib. There's a desk, but no couch. The kitchenette has a microwave, small refrigerator, sink and dishwasher, but no stovetop or oven. Additionally, this is the first RI I've been to that has king beds in the standard rooms (as opposed to queen sized).

On the other hand, they do have larger rooms that are precisely like the standard RI rooms in the US, with a separate kitchen area, living room and sleeping area. If you have a child, that's the type you'd want.

Breakfast, included in the rate, offered scrambled eggs, sausage, ham, bacon, cold cereals, pastries, cheeses, and cold cereals. Good selection, but the breakfast room is smallish and can get crowded.

A free laundry room is off thelobby; it has two washers and two dryers. Note that you might have to clean the lint filter and the water extractor tub because they were both full the times I used them. If you don't know how, ask at the desk; the staff is very helpful.

There's been a lot of talk about heat in the hallways. Yes, it's warm, but get real; how much time do you spend in the hall? Each room has a sliding door that opens and it cools things down pretty quickly.

The staff is very accommodating and happy to do anything they can to make your stay with them pleasant and memorable.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor with a sliding door.

We are staying in the room for two nights. We are a couple and a two year old so we opted for the largest room (I think?), it cost 145 pounds a night and has a lounge/kitchen which is pretty big, and then it has a separate bedroom with a nice big bed. We opted for this type of room so we could have our daughter in a separate area while she is asleep and we are still up watching TV. The hotel is located near the university in a new modern development. There is a coffee shop, Sainsburys and a Starbucks right next door and also a Malaysian restaurant which we might try tonight.

Breakfast was included in our rate, they had a reasonable selection of hot and cold food.

The front desk and breakfast staff have all been helpful and friendly.

The room is nice, bright annd clean. He kitchen is modern and has plates, glasses, dishwasher etc.

Overall we're really happy with the hotel and would definitely come back.

The rooms were very modern and clean; the staff was very pleasant and helpful. We came in on a rare warm stretch so the lack of air conditioning was noticeable. We ran the fans in the closet to maximize the breeze from the window. The location was excellent -- a short walk to the Royal Mile.

The rooms are as shown at the hotel website. We had a separate living room and a kitchen which is very nice with everything one need for simple food preparation (a microwave, a fridge, and a dishwasher). There is a nice restaurant, Pete's Yard coffee shop, and a store just outside the hotel. The breakfast at the hotel was simple but good. Full English breakfast, fruits... No vegetables though! NOTE: there is no air conditioning at the hotel and the windows open just a bit. It can get too hot.

Room Tip: separate living room was worth the money!

Pleasantly surprised by this hotel booked with booking.com for one night £108 in a double room. Hotel is modern and bright inside everything was spotless and our room had everything we needed. Would definitely stay here again with our toddler in a family suite as there is a large park behind the hotel for walks and it is well located above the busy grassmarket to avoid excess noise but still in a central location. The hotel appears to be one of the first tenants in a large development project beside a Victorian hospital which is being converted into luxury flats. No big noise issues there whilst we stayed. The common areas of the hotel are warm but our room was a comfortable temp - 2nd floor. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Will be back - they delivered on what they promised!
