“Feel like a guest (not a customer) in a 19th Century House”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2008

I stayed at Melvin House 3 nights and it was a great experience. It is an old and well maintained house and feels very genuine. The location is great, not right at the centre but only 10 minutes walk to the centre. It is located in a beautiful, quiet square. The staff is very helpful and the breakfast is big and delicious. The rooms are small but cute. We stayed on the 5th floor and had a beautiful view. Also do not miss visiting the library on the first floor.
The only problem is the size of the beds. It was a double bed but felt like slighly bigger than a single bed and it wasn't comfortable. Other than that, everything was great!

Spent one night there for training with work. Stunning and traditional exterior and lobby. Room was clean if a little dated in decor. Quite spacious for a single room! with lovely views over the Forth valley. Staff were very friendly, attentive and accommodating. Breakfast delicious.

Very close to Princes street/George Street and the streets surrounding the hotel are very traditional and classy. A Lovely part of Edinburgh. 5 minutes walk from Haymarket station in one direction and main shopping area in the other. And about 15 minutes walk to Harvey Nichols :-)

All in all a very enjoyable experience and would stay again.

Avoid if you don't like stairs and are claustrophobic in lifts.

The hotel location is near the city centre, but still not too busy. Another good thing was the 4th floor room, which was in excellent condition. Also, the staff was very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was tasty. We had a great visit in Edinburgh and the Melvin House Hotel contributed to that.

We stayed at the Melvin House Hotel for a weekend away in Edinburgh, a found it to be a great place to stay. It's traditionally styled, close to the city centre and fab restaurants on Geoge street. We stayed on the second floor in a double (well triple) room - which was more than big enough; it had a tv with the basic channels, hair dryer, little toiletries and a kettle & shortbread - and huge windows.

The breakfast was fantastic - what a spread. Definately stock up on food for a long day around the city.

Lovely place to stay & I'd definately go back.

Our second stay in this lovely hotel and we were upgraded! The room is huge with lots of fluffy towels, good toiletries and space with views over the Dean Village and the Firth of Forth to Fife. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful although communication at breakfast was a bit difficult at times as English is definitely a second language to some staff. The breakfast is more than adequate with all the food being of a high quality. the hotel is situated in a quiet area near the west end of Princes Street which is an easy walk of some ten minutes. Altogether a comfortable stay and value for money.

I am just back from a 4 night stay at the Melvin House Hotel. I really would recommend this hotel. It is in a lovely area (West End) which is less than 5 mins walk from Princes Street. This is a hotel with character, the building is lovely, the staff helpful and friendly. The breakfast is very good; and all very good value. We had a twin room, which was a good enough size, the shower was great (which is always important). The rooms are not that stylish or modern but then you dont expect them to be in a listed building! Like other reviews for the benefit of less mobile travellers i would flag that the lift is tiny and very slow. But, if you are able a few flights of stairs never hurt anyone, we were on the 3rd floor and timed taking the stairs or getting the lift and the stairs were quicker!. Overall, i am sure you will enjoy this hotel.

a short 5 minute walk to the town centre. very convenient.

although there is no parking outside the hotel, parking nearby is easily found, and manager was very helpful assisting us.

room was tastefully decorated in keeping with the hotel building style. it was clean and warm.

breakfast was tasty and served promptly. plenty of choice for those not wanting to have a cooked breakfast, although it is recommended.

all in all, a very enjoyable stay. will definitely book in for next year's trip to edinburgh.

  • Liked — it was warm, friendly and convenient to the city centre.
  • Disliked — there was no parking available at the hotel
