“Shabby but certainly not Chic!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2012

This hotel is shabby and grubby. There were holes and scuff marks on the corridor walls and on entering our room on the third floor we were met with a musty/sewerage smell which could not be masked even after half a can of deoderant being sprayed. The toilet had a textured floor which had ground in dirt and looked as though it hadn't been scrubbed for months. As we were only staying for one night, we decided to spend as little time as possible in this establishment. We arrived about 5pm and had a taxi booked by 6pm to take us to the centre of Edinburgh only returning to sleep at 10pm. We checked out at 8.30am and have to say the only thing that made staying in our room bareable is the fact that the bed was clean and comfortable and we slept well through the night. Yes you do get what you pay for and as I have previously stayed in a Travelodge in Crewe with similar complaints I decided to give this chain the benefit of the doubt and booked this room, big mistake!! I will happily pay more in future for our accommodation and will avoid Travelodge from now on. This was our third Travelodge experience and it certainly wasn't third time lucky. Never again!

Stayed one night in the Travelodge West End. Location quite central for Edinburgh attractions (Haymarket area). Hotel bedrooms are very basic but clean, okay for £29 a night. Small car park but plenty of spaces in NCP Morrison Street (15 minute walk & £12.50 for 24hrs).
Did not eat in this hotel so cannot comment about the food. Staff friendly enough.

There was no soap in the bathroom and the staff was indifferent to this fact.

Stayed here mid-week, using 2 rooms for 2 nights with my daughter and 3 grandsons. Staff were very helpful, extra pillows and travel advice (the roads in Edinburgh are a nightmare due to the new tram tracks being laid). Parking was easy and managed to get a space both nights, but it was mid-week. Had rooms on the ground floor (6 & 7) which were clean, but basic. The noise from the air-con units and the river disturbed my sleep, so perhaps a room higher up might be better. The reception area and bar were quite nice and the breakfast was great, good value too, as 2 children eat free with every paying adult. Didn't eat in at night, but if the breakfast is anything to go by, then it should be ok. Overall good value for money at £19 a night, but wouldn't want to pay the full price. About a 30 minute walk up to the castle and £7.75 in a taxi back from Waverley Station.
By the way, the 'new' photos on Tripadvisor are NOT of this hotel, so don't think its had a massive refurb.!!

Good: within walking distance of city (15 min walk), good food, cheap deals.
Bad: why do maids knock on the door before check out when the do not disturb sign is up? Room very very basic (stark) but OK for £19. Breakfast was reasonable but it was busy and they were running out of cutlery. There is also a weir at the rear of the hotel which was quite noisy. Parking is £3 for 24 hours.
Over all not too bad if you get a good price.

Room Tip: Avoid lower floors at the rear (closer to the weir)
