Britannia Edinburgh Hotel

This hotel has been rebranded countless times but don't let that put you off. It's been a Ladbrokes, Hilton, Menzies, travelodge and now a Britannia. Last refurb was under the travelodge brand so that's the standard of rooms.

Clean, great location (5 pound for 24hr parking, buy ticket from cryptic machine then get ticket stamped at reception). Nice walk down by the waters of leath. About 15 mins walk (up hill) to west end of princes street. Friendly staff. 4 star it isn't. Good value it is. Max I would pay for a room here is 40 pound a night.

Ignore what use to be the reception and go down hill round the back to the new reception. Closed old reception at front looks a bit ugly but makes total sense to move it round the back next to car park.

My partner and I stayed here in December and its nothing to rave about, but not too bad for the price. I think the first thing to mention is how helpful and sweet the front of house staff are - they really did everything to make our stay as easy as possible.

Our room was on the 4th floor overlooking the weir. It was tolerably clean, well enough equipped, warm and a comfortable bed and working TV. The hotel is only a short walk from town, so an excellent location for the price.

My main gripe was the shower - it was mouldy and there was never any hot water when we needed it (in the mornings). I once had to run the water for a full 15 minutes before it warmed up to an acceptable level. But the water pressure was good!

Also, the room had two small towels and two large towels for both of us, but each time we used one it was taken away never to be replaced so by the end of our stay we only had one set of towels to share between us. Not exactly thoughtful housekeeping - and just a bit of a stupid thing to have to contend with at a hotel that claims its 3 star.

Facilities were good enough but the canteen looked dodgy so we avoided it. I can't really complain as the price was good and very fair - but don't expect too much from this cut-price hotel. If you want 5 star service, be prepared to pay 5 star prices!

Room Tip: higher floor rooms have better views

Me and my girlfriend stayed 2 nights in room 14 after reading reviews to be honest we were expecting a stay at a hostel...but the hotel was a very pleasant stay...the room was clean with all facilities needed...bed was very comfortable which led to a good sleep. The staff were fantastic very helpful also breakfast was very good with plenty of choice....don't be put off with the negative comments..as we'd happily return.

I stayed at the hotel for 1 night, I arrived at the hotel and paid my £5 for parking. I found my room on the 4th floor and eventually worked out how to turn the lights on. The room was large and had everything you would expect. However, the bathroom wasn't as clean as you'd hope for the price and the window in the bedroom wouldn't close fully. But I'm a heavy sleeper so the sound of the river outside didn't disturb me too much. The breakfast was a good price but the quality wasn't there. Overall it was ok.

After spending 9 nights at the Britannia Hotel Edinburgh my honest opinion is quite positive. Apart from one day without water my stay was very pleasant indeed. The staff were friendly and the rooms basic but clean and beds comfortable. I had a room that was facing the street so the road tragic was a little noisy but the hotel itself was peaceful and quiet.

This was just like staying at a Travelodge. The reception area has been moved to the lower ground level. Unfortunately the previous reception upstairs makes bad first impressions from the outside. It would definitely not attract passing trade. However, once you pass the bin area and car park right outside the main doors, and you enter the building, the reception area is welcoming. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The room was warm and clean, the bed comfortable and tea and coffee were provided in the room. The bathroom was modern with a brand new shower curtain. There was a hole in the carpet in the corner of the room but there was no need to go near it. Eat as much as you like Breakfast was extra at £7.95 from 8am to 11am. There were problems on the first morning with keeping customers waiting for more items to be cooked but this was fine on the second day. In fact because the restaurant was busy, it meant that food was freshly cooked frequently and not left to stand. Although we were only there 2 nights, the room was cleaned after the first night and fresh towels supplied again. From the airport the Airport Express 100 bus takes you to Haymarket Station where it is a 15 minute walk to the Hotel. This costs £3.50 or £6 return. From the hotel, it is about 15 minutes walk to Princes Street. The Christmas market was amazing and open 10am to 10pm. If you want a lovely hotel to impress, then this isn't the one to choose but for a cheaper option, I would recommend it for short stay and I would stay there again.

Staff at reception were very pleasant but the bleak cell like room was awful and I couldn't wait to get out.
Hard narrow bed not a single picture on the wall no curtains just a stark white blind.... I'm not fussy and to be fair the room was clean but so worn and scruffy.
The dining room was like a canteen and smelt very greasy
