“You pay for what you get which isn't that bad”
Reviewed 9 January 2014 via mobile

Stayed in here for 1 night on New Year's Day. Didn't really expect much for £35 a night but for the price it was a basic but decent room that was very clean and comfortable. The service was fantastic and checking in was a breeze. Check in is at 2pm but if you have bags and want to leave them then they will look after them for you.
The room is similar to a travel lodge type room. The bathroom really good, very powerful shower and decent size bath.
I didn't eat there but the hotel does do basic evening meals if you want to dine in. There is also a bar with reasonably priced drinks.
The hotel is exactly 20 minutes walk to Edinburgh Waverley station and 10 minutes walk to hay-market.
Would defiantly recommend to anyone who wants to stay the odd night and just wants to get their head down, probably not recommended for a couple looking for a romantic night though !

Worst hotel I have ever stayed in!

On arrival, the receptionist informed us that we had 2 rooms booked for the same night- although my email confirmed I had booked 1 room for 2 nights, the receptionist insisted I took it up with Expedia & that I had to ring them myself.

Only after insisting I had made the correct booking, kicking up a bit of a fuss & showing my email confirmation did the receptionist realise she had made a mistake and had her dates muddled! We were booked in for 2 nights after all but 2 of the same bookings were showing on her system- frustrating after a very unhelpful welcome telling us we would have to sort it ourselves.

When finally arriving to our room with our luggage, we discovered that we could not get in with the key cards that we had been provided with. When returning back to reception the receptionist realised she had also put us in the wrong room! Therefore we then had to lug our bags back to the lift to a different floor to finally arrive at the correct room- what a disappointment!

I don't mind basic but this room was unfit for purpose- there were stains on the wall and one whole wall was covered with damp. The room also smelt horribly of an extremely strong damp smell. The one bonus was a fabulous view that overlooked the river. The downside to this was that as we were so close to the river, the rushing waters kept me awake at night. We were away with friends and their room wasn't quite so bad, not as close to the river and not as damp stained.

I only wish we had complained at the time, but to be honest, with the lack of efficiency already displayed by the hotel staff, we could not be bothered as just felt lucky to have a room- apparently other people had booked & were told there were no rooms available! On the plus side we stayed New Year's Eve & were close enough to walk to the main attraction at Edinburgh Castle. All the locals were very friendly- so a big thumbs up to Edinburgh, but unfortunately a huge thumbs down to Hotel Britannia!

Room Tip: Do not accept room 214- it's horrible!

Me and my boyfriend stayed for the new year.
1# We were given two single beds pushed together instead of a double like we paid for, beds kept separating at night not ideal for a young couple.
2# Bedroom was needed painting covered in marks and dirt.
3# Stayed for 4 days room was not cleaned for us once, was given two rolls of toilet roll that were half gone.
4#Power went on the third day making it almost impossible to spend time in the room.
5#no tv remote in the room and radiator too small to heat the room freezing at night.

Only good thing to say about the hotel is the staff were easy to talk to and friendly

We stayed on 30th and 31st and I have to say after all the bad reviews we didn't find anything wrong with the hotel. It is basic, but the room as just what we needed for a short new year break. The reception and bar/restaurant area we're clean and tidy and we found the staff really pleasant. Breakfast was good and there was a good selection. We had a ground floor room next to the river and didn't have any problem with noise from it even though it was running wild after the bad weather. There is plenty of parking which is a plus and at only £5 for 24 hours was pretty cheap. A nice 20 min walk either along the river or road and you are at Princes Street. Would definitely recommend for a short break and would definitely stay again.

Our trip to this hotel was as part of our Hogmanay celebrations. The hotel was easy to find and had enough parking spaces although you had to pay £5 for the day and have the ticket stamped at reception to park for 24 hours.
We had booked an executive room for three nights but ended up seeing three different rooms during our stay! Our first room was nice enough but a fault on the key card locks meant we had to move room.
Our second room, Room 15, was not nice at all and smelled awful of damp carpets. We spent one night in this room before all of the electricity going off during the morning meaning we couldn't get ready as we couldn't see anything in the dark!
The staff tried their best to make things right and gave us another room to use for showers etc. this was room 4 and much nicer and didn't smell. After a little while we were told we could move all of our things and stay in this room for the remainder of our stay.
All in all if we had been given this room on the first day we would have been relatively pleased with our stay but sadly due to the difficulties we had a disruptive break rather than a relaxing one.
The hotel is about a fifteen minute walk from Princes Street and so ok location wise for those who are able to walk around this distance.
Breakfast was ok but we didn't have any other meals.
Would we stay here again? If everywhere else was booked and we didn't get room 15 then we might consider it, but after having two disappointing breaks in Britannia hotels (the other in Manchester) I am reluctant to try this company for a third time.

I'm no stranger to budget hotels in Edinburgh, I've stayed in a couple of Travelodges, Ibis, Holiday Inn and others that escape me. This is the worst hotel I've stayed in by a mile.

Smelly scruffy corridors matched with a dingy smelly room.

Random smears of "stuff" on the walls of our room which stank of a mixture of bleach and smoke, mildew in the ancient bathroom. Only positive was the clean white bedding.

Didn't eat there!

Staff variable - girl that checked us in was great, bloke I spoke to the next day was ignorant and slow \ not bothered.

Never ever again!
