“very dirty uncomfortable do not believe the pictures on website!”
Reviewed 16 December 2013

We went to Edinburgh for the Scottish national championships myself and my 2 daughters 14 and 13. We booked a family room and when we arrived the room was smelly with dirty carpets no curtains and a small double bed and a single bed in the room. No side lights the tv did not work the plug sockets did not work on one side of the room. We made best as everywhere was full and we would be spending most of our time at the pool. We came back on the evening at 7.55 after swimming all day very tired to find the Hotel does not cook food!! so we had to then in the pitch black try and find somewhere to eat. No bar service so could not even get a drink or a coffee. no room service for the 3 days and nights we were there the trash in the bit just lay. When i left i complained about it saying it was not worth the £163 i had been charged and it was simply a bed in a grotty room we had with very little sleep as to all the comings and goings through the paper thin walls. I was told by the manager i had to pay the full amount or she would ring the police! would strongly not recommend this hotel!! The pictures on the website showed this to be everything its not! very very bad experience. I have been all over the country with swimming and stayed in hundreds of hotels over the last 6 years this was positively the worst ever.

We stayed at the Northumberland for one night. In general we had a decent stay. All the staff we're extremely friendly and helpful.

Our room was okay, freezing as the radiator was turned right down but we soon turned it up. The bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable and the pillows were so flat it was like sleeping on just the matress. Likewise the quilt cover was passed it's best, uneven stuffing. The batgroom door handle came off so we could only shut it if we were both in the room to open from the outside. All in all the room was okay, served it's purpose.

The breakfast was £15 for two Scottish cooked breakfasts. This is £15 I wish I had not speant. For one we were given and English breakfast. However the bacon and sausage was burnt and the fried egg was like rubber. The breakfast was extremely poor in my eyes.

All in all our stay at the Northumberland was okay, but don't think I'd return.

Pros:
-Location is decent, about a 20 minute bus ride from the center of town.
-The front desk staff was nice, answered questions if we had any, but didn't really offer much advice.
Cons:
-Note that Room One is not behind the actual second level of hotel rooms. One night at 3 in the morning there was an actual yelling match between two visitors on the staircase (maybe they didn't realize there was another room right at the top of the stairs) and we literally had front row seats. Could hear everyone coming and going from/into the hallway/staircase.
-No proper heating/air circulation/space heater. No way to open the window either.
-No room cleaning service. Didn't clean the bathroom once in our three nights, and only took out the trash twice.
-No top sheet on bed. Never made up the beds/room tidying.
-Bed was certainly not comfortable, with one flat, limp pillow and one overused understuffed blanket.

Room Tip: Do NOT take room 1. See details in the review.

The location is quiet, the walk to downtown is easy and gentle, the staff are friendly and helpful, and the rooms are comfortable. I would recommend this hotel for families, couples, and singles looking to explore Edinburgh and Newington. While the distance is about 2 miles from the city center, the bus picks up right out front, and the walk is really nice if you want some exercise. Good base to explore the area!

the location of this hotel is perfect for visiting the royal mile , Edinburgh castle, Holyrood palace etc. as it is all a very short bus ride away , and the bus stops almost outside the hotel !The hotel itself is lovely and provides everything you need . The staff are very lovely and helpful. The young lady from The Isle of Wight ,who was working there even provided my boys with a fancy and very delicious cupcake each ! Would stay here again next time !!

After feeling apprehensive about our weekend away here after reading some reviews on here I was pleasantly surprised with our visit.
Yes the room was basic, the bathroom also but it did what we needed it to. The bedding was clean and fresh and the staff seemed nice and very helpful.
I would stay here again.
