My girlfriend and I stayed here for a couple of nights on our first visit to Scotland's Capital City. I really can't see why there are so many negative reviews to be honest! We have nothing but praise for the services we received, especially considering the room was let out to us at a very reasonable price!

We arrived in Edinburgh earlier than originally planned (around 8am, we travelled by coach) so we phoned the hotel and asked them if they'd take our cases in before the usual check in time (2pm). The receptionist couldn't have been more helpful or courteous, she was more than willing to help! We jumped in a cab to the hotel and met her there only to find more positive news, our room was already available for us to check in, a whole five hours before we were scheduled to arrive!

We had room number 14 and, after reading some of the reviews on here, We weren't exactly expecting Ritz quality accommodation, and we didn't get it either. But you know what? We weren't looking for it! We paid for a place to lay our heads, nothing more! The bed was comfortable, the room was clean and the shower worked perfectly fine. We even had room service at our door before our first day was out asking if we needed anything extra, we'd only been there a matter of hours.

Overall we're very happy with our experience of the Northumberland Hotel in Edinburgh, we'd even recommend it to friends. If you're looking for a decent hotel with a great central location then book up! Just don't expect the world for £20 a night!

Myself and my partner got a cheap deal for this hotel from Travlezoo, we were fairly happy with the hotel. It is by no means 5 star but it is OK for a short stay and no more than that. The room was very small and basic, the bathroom was tiny and the shower was actually at the end of the bed, it was compact and tight but to be fair it was clean, warm and quiet which are the basic requirements of any hotel room. It was nothing flash but it did for us as we only wanted somewhere to get our heads down on a night, we didn't spend much time there as we were out exploring this amazing city. Its in a convenient location, just a short bus ride to the city centre, the buses are regular and cheap and run til late. We left our car in the car park and used buses all the time it was that easy. The lady on the front desk was friendly enough and overall it was an average stay, but the Ritz it aint so if you want something a bit more up market look elsewhere!

We got a discounted price for a family room. Cleaned regularly, Friendly staffs, near the cameron toll shopping mall which is very handy, frequent bus services to city centre.

Should provide free wifi! The rest is very good at that price.

I booked what was described to me as a double hotel room with ensuite through easytobook.com...what I got was an absolute disgrace within a glorified bed and breakfast establishment stuck in a 1970's time warp!...a single room replete with a tiny toilet cubicle with ancient fittings and linoleum flooring!...a shower stall actually within the sleeping area and without any expelair facility...a double bed cramped into what little space was left..grubby carpet...no desk..a bedside lamp which didn't work (but which was replaced by the receptionist)....I could have stayed in the Travelodge next door for less money....the only bright spot of the whole experience was the very efficient and friendly Sarah..she would be an asset to any proper establishment and I speak as someone who has travelled extensively throughout the world and stayed in literally hundreds of proper hotels....real hospitality industry talent wasted at this dump!!

Very convenient location: right on the bus line, 5 minute walk to shopping mall
Staff seemed disengaged. We were informed both nights we stayed as we were coming in for the night that there was a dance party going on downstairs and that they hoped it wouldn't be too loud. It gave the impression that it would be something we'd have to deal with.
I'm pretty sure that they turned off the hot water heaters at night, so when we got up at 6am to get ready for our day, the water was luke warm. Horrible during the winter.
Three of us checked in, but only two towels were ever brought to the room. The tea cups left for us were filthy, and needed a very good scrubbing.

We went to Edinburgh for the Scottish national championships myself and my 2 daughters 14 and 13. We booked a family room and when we arrived the room was smelly with dirty carpets no curtains and a small double bed and a single bed in the room. No side lights the tv did not work the plug sockets did not work on one side of the room. We made best as everywhere was full and we would be spending most of our time at the pool. We came back on the evening at 7.55 after swimming all day very tired to find the Hotel does not cook food!! so we had to then in the pitch black try and find somewhere to eat. No bar service so could not even get a drink or a coffee. no room service for the 3 days and nights we were there the trash in the bit just lay. When i left i complained about it saying it was not worth the £163 i had been charged and it was simply a bed in a grotty room we had with very little sleep as to all the comings and goings through the paper thin walls. I was told by the manager i had to pay the full amount or she would ring the police! would strongly not recommend this hotel!! The pictures on the website showed this to be everything its not! very very bad experience. I have been all over the country with swimming and stayed in hundreds of hotels over the last 6 years this was positively the worst ever.

We stayed at the Northumberland for one night. In general we had a decent stay. All the staff we're extremely friendly and helpful.

Our room was okay, freezing as the radiator was turned right down but we soon turned it up. The bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable and the pillows were so flat it was like sleeping on just the matress. Likewise the quilt cover was passed it's best, uneven stuffing. The batgroom door handle came off so we could only shut it if we were both in the room to open from the outside. All in all the room was okay, served it's purpose.

The breakfast was £15 for two Scottish cooked breakfasts. This is £15 I wish I had not speant. For one we were given and English breakfast. However the bacon and sausage was burnt and the fried egg was like rubber. The breakfast was extremely poor in my eyes.

All in all our stay at the Northumberland was okay, but don't think I'd return.
