“Excellent location & apartment”
Reviewed 25 June 2013

We stayed in apartment 11 and were extremely happy with it. It was a very large apartment, very comfortably furnished and well stocked. It was so lovely to have a washing machine and extra room to spread out a bit for the last couple of nights of our holiday. The location was terrific, right in Parliament Square on the Royal Mile. So handy to everything. Derek was extremely helpful and very prompt answering any queries when we were organising our holiday. There is no lift as in all of the older buildings which was no problem at all to us. Derek carried up our suitcases which was much appreciated.

Derek and his team were incredibly helpful and accommodating and it made our trip to Edinburgh even better. We arrived a few hours before the official 3pm check-in and Derek kindly arranged for our apartment to be ready for us very soon after arrival. We went for a coffee expecting to have to wait a while, but received a call to say it was ready. On check-out we were able to stay in the apartment until we needed to leave to catch our flight.
The apartment on Grassmarket was spacious, clean and had everything we needed. It was just a couple of minutes from the Royal Mile, and a good location for bars/ restaurants/city sights.
An excellent choice of places to stay and would stay here again.

We stayed in the 2 bed apartment on Johnstone Terrace and it was excellent. Extremely spacious with really coomfortable beds and everything you would need - we had 4 adults and a toddler in our group and it was more than enough room. Location is excellent with the castle, Royal Mile and tourist area just hundereds of feet away with the restaurants and bars of the grassmarket on the other side. Princes street shops and gardens are about 10-15 mins walk away. As the other reviews say Derek was excellent and available to help although we had no issues or reasons to call. Heating and noise was no issue for us. You could easily stay here for a week and have everything you need.
Negatives - only one for me toilet (seperate to bathroom) feels a bit small and one bedroom with en suite would be nice but again not necessary. We will rebook this apartment when we return to Edinburgh. Need to plan your parking though and ideally come by train as station is not far and would save parking costs which are high in Edinburgh.

Just returned from a four night stay at 7 Parliament Square, had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The apartment is very well located, literally a few minutes walk from the castle. We drove to Edinburgh from Birmingham and realised when we got there that we hadn't checked parking facilities!! There isn't any. Derek the landlord helped us find a place to leave the car on the outskirts of centre and that worked well, but if I returned to Edinburgh again I would go either by plane or train as the apartment is so well located you can get to all the main tourist attractions by foot.

Our one bed apartment was compact and bijou, nicely appointed, only downside as mentioned by others was the closet bedroom, without any window you can feel a bit claustrophobic, but we managed fine with the door open. Lovely comfortable corner sofa and snazzy bathroom. Other people have mentioned noise but we were not disturbed particularly ( at the end of the day you are in a central city location).

Lovely restaurants on doorstep, so spoilt for choice! Thoroughly enjoyed the Italian, Gordons Trattoria and the Whiski Room. Tourist attractions included Castle, Palace, Georgian House, Royal Yacht Britannia and the Real Mary King Close, the latter we found a bit overpriced.

All in all a great stay, would recommend! :)

The review by yandinazetland could have been written by me - I endorse everything said in that review except that we didn't get the welcoming bottle of wine! Location couldn't be better but the apartment was disappointing. I suppose it didn't help that we had stayed in Berlin the previous week in an amazing apartment which cost considerably less.
The bedroom was no more than a cupboard - barely room for the bed and no window and would certainly be no good for anyone slightly claustrophobic. As the other reviewer commented, we also were disturbed through the night by the plumbing that runs down the wall only inches from your head. Although the bathroom looked impressive the shower screen didn't appear to be fitted correctly and we didn't manage to have a shower without flooding the floor. Would I recommend it or return?.....no.

We booked 7 Johnston Terrace; a 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment. Firstly, the location was just fantastic. We could not have been closer to everything. 5 minute walk (at most) to the pubs, 10 minutes to Holyrood, and right across the street from the castle.
The apartment itself was extremely spacious, and we were so glad that we chose to book an apartment (versus hotel) for the middle of our trip. I've stayed in many hotels in Europe and know how small they can be; this was a refreshing change. It was nice to come home to a living room and TV and place to put food/drinks/snacks.
Everything was very clean. The rooms were appointed similarly to a Holiday Inn (for those of us who live in the US). I loved the charm of tall old windows and ceilings, large crown moldings, and unfinished hardwood floors. The kitchen was updated with a good size fridge, freezer, and included the basics you may need to cook (or at least make tea/coffee). The bathroom with the toilet was a little small and less updated, but the bathroom with the sink and shower (most important to me) were clean and updated. They provided us with more than enough towels.
A few minor forewarnings: We were planning on washing clothes there, but they only had a washing machine (no dryer). We ended up not using it since we didn't have a clothesline and weren't sure our jeans would dry in enough time in the wet weather. Also, the heat turns off in the evening and comes back on in the AM around 6. It got pretty cold, and they didn't have any spare blankets. I slept in my socks and a fleece to stay warm, and we brought the comforters out to the living room to watch TV at night.
Our contact met us at the hotel, met us late at night and showed us around the place, and was very friendly. He gave us his personal phone number to call and was available the whole time we were there in case we needed anything.
I would definitely stay there again, but maybe with a blanket in tow. The location and spaciousness honestly can't be beat.

We have just returned from a long weekend staying at Greyfriars apartment Number 1 in Parliament Square - as reviewed in the previous two reports. It was a six nation rugby weekend and as expected Edinburgh was bursting at the seams with supporters from Wales and Scotland - including us - having a ball. Accommodation is at a premium at this time and the cost for three nights in this one bedroom apartment was equal to the normal price of a medium/high end hotel chain. We expected a special experience - however the good was almost scratched by the bad.
The good.
The location is fantastic if you want to be in the centre of the city - ten minutes from Waverley Railway Station - next door to St Giles Cathedral - midway between the Castle and Holyrood House.
The booking process - all very smooth - good engagement and communication - just ask the right questions.
The representative - Derek met us at the apartment and gave us a quick tour - he is a very helpful guy and went out of his way to explain the set up - I suggest he is worth his weight in gold to the Company( and the Scottish Tourist Board) and I trust they recognise this.
The apartment is well equipped with a cooker , washing machine /drier , dishwasher and microwave oven - lots of crockery and things to cook with - fantastic if you plan to eat indoors rather than try the hundreds of Edinburgh eateries that are within a ten minute walk.
The bathroom looks , at first glance , very swish - facy whirlpool bath , gleaming shower and mirrored walls.
A big TV.
The welcoming bottle of wine.
Plenty of storage space.
And of course the location.

The not so good.
The bedroom and the bed - the bed just fits into the bedroom - 12 inches to the wall on one side and eighteen on the other, 12 inches to the door.
There is no window in the bedroom.
Few people i know would be comfortable sleeping in a room as described above with the door closed.
The noise - this is really important.
This flat is on the second floor - above an italian restaurant - the window looks out over Old Fishmarket Close - a key thoroughfare between the clubs and nightspots of the Cowgate and the Grassmarket and the High Street. A lot of footfall.
The windows are old single pane sash windows - they do not cut out any of the noise level. I do not mean the noise from a group of loud singing party goers - although there were a few of them - I mean the sounds of empty bottles being emptied by the downstairs pasta parlour and the conversations of the groups passing through the Close.
More noise issues include the downpipe that runs down the left hand corner of the bedroom - next to your pillow if you are sleeping next to the wall - every time a loo is flushed or a bath emptied in the rooms above the sounds are transferred through this pipe.
I can sleep at a bus stop - I have slept in a ships cabin next to an engine room for many years - but after our first night I resorted to buying some ear plugs - which went a little way to flattening out the sounds of the night.

I said at the outset that the prices for this two person apartment are in line with a good quality hotel room. The hotel will service your room every day - supplying you with fresh bedlinen and towels - remember this does not happen here.
In the hotel - even at the Premier Inn - you will be supplied with tea and coffee making ingredients - there was no welcome pack - only a couple of teabags probably left by a previous visitor.
We did have a great weekend - however I expected better things from Greyfriars Apartments and will not be back.
