The Original Raj Hotel

Reviewed 7 February 2014 via mobile

I didnt have alot of expectations after reading a couple of reviews. But the raj hotel has plenty of character, great value for money, and could not be better located for murrayfield. It only cost £6 in a taxi to popular bars etc. But easy to walk aswell. Definatley will stay again!!!

Booked this hotel for a day/night out in Edinburgh and for its Indian theme (Something different).
Rooms are good sized but dated looking (Yes i know its supposed to be "original" Indian , that does not mean you dont have to give it a lick of paint every once in a while though!) Also remember to switch/turn your radiators up in your room otherwise you better have your thermals with you.Staff were friendly enough if a bit short on conversation...i,e none at all but they did smile. Car parking is non-existent other than parking on street which is meter controlled Mon-Fri 08.00-17.30, but there is plenty of parking nearby.Transport is good as you are right on the bus route and close enough to Haymarket train station. Breakfast is a mixture of fruit, cereals and toast/jam but no option for any cooked food. Drinks and Dinner? Dont be daft...they dont offer any. The cooler in reception was knackered but they still charged £1.50 for a small bottle of "hot" water. Other disappointment was that despite emailing the hotel a few days prior to arrival asking if they could arrange flowers in the room, no email was returned. Guess its better to phone! With a bit of fore thought this could be a really excellent hotel to stay in, IF they communicate better, offer a more varied breakfast and heaven forbid actually serve dinner (Indian meals spring to mind to keep within tradition/theme).

So come on Raj...customer is king.....get a bar in and serve dinner and get those reviews up!

Room Tip: Difficult to promote as for the same money the Apex nearer the city has far better facilities,

Stayed here for one night on a recent trip to Edinburgh with my two boys. They really liked the Indian theme. The room was clean - the sheets were clean. Breakfast was good value as not normally included for the price that I paid.
The only slight negative for me was the room was a little cold and had blankets rather than duvets. Hence I had to wrap up warm to sleep.

We had an impromptu couple of days visiting Edinburgh and booked the Raj due to it's alternative theme. We visited Goa last year so thought this would be nice. The hotel was certainly more luxurious than any Goan hotel and was decorated very tastefully, We stayed in the Bollywood room which was more of a suite than a room. It was very clean and the bed extremely comfortable. The breakfast was a continental breakfast but sufficient to start the day with. After all visiting a lovely city is all about eating at their restaurants and sampling the scottish cuisine. The staff were all very polite and professional and we would definitely stay there again.

I was surprised by the other reviews on tripadvisor (I had read reviews on the booking site which were nowhere near as damning). We paid £79 to stay in a so-called deluxe room - Ayesha - and although it was too small and had no special touches other than a canopy bed to qualify it as deluxe, the room was fine and I thought the price was OK for a hotel so close to the city (£1.50 bus ride to Princes Street). Yes the place would benefit from a refurb but the bedroom, bathroom, bedding and corridors were all clean, bed was large and extremely comfortable, pillows were soft, there were extra blankets if we needed them, the room was at the back of the hotel and very quiet. Shower was powerful and hot, soap and shampoo provided. I was taken aback when I realised there was no cooked breakfast on offer, it was a very basic cold buffet of room temperature orange juice, 3 cereals, yogurts, croissants (cheap stodgy ones), and sliced bread to make toast. The cheese was sweaty squares in vacuum packed plastic, I felt appalled at what Continental guests would make of them. The hotel really needs to invest in at least a 2nd toaster, the guests were all circling each other waiting to pounce on the single 2-slot toaster. The coffee was excellent, but weirdly you had to ask for a pot of tea. I should have thought a vacuum flask of hot water and selection of tea bags would be easy?? The hotel has no car park, however we were staying on a Saturday night and at the weekends there is no restriction on parking in residential side streets so that was easy. Hair dryers are available on request from reception.

My partner and I stayed one night at this hotel recently . and we were very unhappy with everything about this hotel. I suppose you get what you pay for as it was very cheap, but the room was not very clean and shabby the bed was terrible (never slept all night ) and the breakfast was a disgrace cheap spam and greasy cheese. We stayed at this hotel a few years ago and were very happy with it but not this time. On the plus side the staff were pleasant enough and the hotel is fairly central to all the Edinburgh attractions, but I doubt if I would use this hotel again.

We visited Edinburgh in July this year and because the Golf was on there was very limited accommodation, unfortunately we landed at the Original Raj. Very poor communication and greeting. The room were all but OK. The breakfast, if you can call it that was shocking. Most visitors to Edinburgh expect a traditional cooked breakfast, and guest houses go out of there way to provide the best, unfortunately this place does not. Not even a grunt from the person at the desk, simply make your own toast and that IT. We will certainly NOT be returning to this place at over £100 per night. Shocking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
