“Just the Job!”
Reviewed 19 April 2014

We had a little trouble spotting the Travelodge initially due to the flag outside being all tangled up and due to heavy traffic and concerntrating on where I was driving missed seeing the sign on the pavement the first time round. Handy that you can park outside to unload cases to save having to trundle them from the car park which is a short 5 min walk away (We used the 24 hour John Lewis car park) We found the hotel to be in a really good spot to access all the things we went for which was mainly the castle and the shops. Plenty of places to eat a stones throw away. I would use this Travelodge again if/when visiting Edinburgh again.

We had a nice clean family room, the location in the New Town was great for all Edinburgh's attractions and shops. The staff were very friendly and helpful, we will definitely be staying again. We didn't try the breakfast boxes as their is a Whetherspoons just around the corner on George Street serving a good breakfast from 8am onwards

Great location. Friendly staff. Clean and comfortable room with a hot and powerful shower. All public transport, shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance. Would stay again. Did not try the breakfast box as Weatherspoons on the next street

Excellent location for all the major attractions in Edinburgh just a short walk to Princes St and a little further for the Castle, Royal Mile etc. Hotel was clean, comfortable and quiet, staff were pleasant and the whole stay was excellent value for money. Would definitely return.

Convenient location for exploring Edinburgh Town Centre, Away from the potential noise of Princes Street. Stayed on a Wednesday night and plenty of eating places nearby. Hotel clean and stay hassle-free.

Not what expected. We booked a family room with continental breakfast for 4 nights and we were given a room with just a queen bed. The breakfast is definitly not continental, just a nox with orange juice and a muffin. The receptionist told us unfortunately there were no place no change room. The same happened a three boys that were at the hotel.

First off, I have mobility problems which require the use of a scooter. Although I had booked to stay, I was unable to continue to stay at this hotel. However, I would like to base my review on accessibility to the hotel, and customer services received at the hotel.

Access to the hotel is via 6 steps; and there is an alternate entrance at the rear of the hotel, about 3/4 mins walk away.
The Travelodge website states: "Guests should be aware there are 6 steps up to the hotel main entrance. Level access is available via an alternative entrance on North West Thistle Street Lane to the rear of the hotel where limited free parking is also available for blue badge holders".

However, if you have mobility problems, please, please, please be warned that the 'level' access on North West Thistle Street Lane is not very level at all Google Street View shows the dodgy cobbles (although it doesn't show how bad it really was!).
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@55.9539,-3.200193,3a,90y,325.64h,62.26t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sANmiUktiBMKkkGrfTtQKmA!2e0

I used my scooter the rest of the time around Edinburgh, and the cobbles were bouncy and fun(!) - and did not cause any problems.

The problem with North West Thistle Street is the way that the cobbles seem to camber into one an other, causing great difficulties when navigating around parked vehicles and bins. There is no way around on a pavement either - meaning I had to drive in the middle of the road around a blind bend. If you are in a manual wheelchair, please use an alternate hotel.

Once you arrive at the gated entrance via North West Thistle Street, you have to wait to be buzzed in by reception, you then ride down a slope and into the back of the hotel. Once in, there is a wheelchair crane to get you up the four steps. However, if you're travelling on your own, be-aware that some of the corridors are very narrow. The door into the reception also opened the wrong way meaning I had to go right into a dead-end and reverse into reception.

I really wish hotels would employ somebody with a disability to try checking in from scratch, to fully experience their check-in and rooms.

The hotel receptionist (I think her name was Roccoco, from Spain) was at first a little judgemental when I regaled my troubled journey to check-in, stating that other people have not had a problem. Not the customer service I was expecting. I was aggravated by her initial response; but when I fully explained my condition, and the fact that i would not be able to do this journey 2/3 times a day (for my 4 day visit to Edinburgh) she asked what we'd like to do.

We asked to be transferred to a more disabled-friendly Travelodge, and eventually (thanks to Travelodge HQ) they found us a disabled room at Waterloo Place (review to come)

So although I cannot comment on rooms etc. I have to say that customer-service wise, although lacking in experience with mobility problems, Roccoco ended up being attentive and helpful.
