St. Christopher's Inn Edinburgh
Reviewed 20 July 2008

At 2 am we were woken by a drunken guy urinating outside our door. He then proceeded by trying to get into our room and we had to scream at him to make him go away. The urine then leaked under the door, forming a puddle on our floor. Fortunately, the staff hadn't left for the night and we got help mopping it up, and were then given a towel to put on the floor and a can of air freshener!
After that incident we eventually managed to fall asleep again, only to be awaken two hours later by a drunken bunch of lads running back and forth in the hallway and slamming the doors. We didn't get much sleep that night and checked out earlier than planned the next morning. Needless to say, this experience ruined a big part of our stay in Edinburgh.
Our en suite double room was tiny, but the bed was comfortable (though I found hair on the pillow). The bathroom smelt as moldy as a castle dungeon and there was pubic hair in the shower. You couldn't sit on the toilet without jamming your leg onto the wall. Location was great though and staff was friendly, though they did seem a bit blasé.
My boyfriend and I aren't fussy, but this place was a total dump. A true party joint – probably heaven for 18 year olds that have never been away from home before and only want a roof above their heads. If you're after more than that, it's possible to get a much more decent 2 star hotel or B&B for just a few pounds more.

We stayed in an ensuite twin room for two nights while visiting for a stag party.

The room was really cramped (sloping roof) and smelt damp so strongly it hit you when you walked in. I'm not too fussed about the standard of decoration in a hostel but it did look like somebody colour-blind had been let loose with a paintball gun 10 years ago... The beds were OK for hostel beds (i.e. thin mattress and bedding) but the floor sloped so you had to stop yourself rolling out of bed.

There was black mould in the bathroom which, like the rest of the room, was pretty dilapidated and not very clean. The toilet seat was broken and the shower was pretty feeble. There was NO HOT WATER OR HEATING!

You might forgive this if the staff were helpful but they were rude and acted like we were causing them an inconvenience by being there (and we didn't even complain about the room). We didn't bother with the "breakfast" as it was limited to toast and cereal and didn't look worth the effort frankly.

To put this in context - it cost £103 for a two night stay; You can stay in a reasonable hotel or B&B for that. Our friends stayed in the SmartCity Hostel, which was clean, modern and had good facilities and rooms. We actually went there for breakfast on the Sunday...

Please do visit Edinburgh as it's a fantastic city BUT don't stay here. There are plenty of good hotels or hostels depending on your budget that can give you a much better stay than this dump!

This is my second time at St Christopher's, and yet again I had a lovely time. It is basic, but not dirty, and has everything you'd like for a hostel. This place is in the top 10 hostels in the UK for a reason!

The rooms have the linen changed DAILY, and the whole place is cleaned VERY well from top to toe daily. The rooms are simple and colourful, and the showers and toilets are very good.

There is also a lift, which really helps!

The breakfast is toast, cereal and tea - better than most places where you get nothing!

The staff are helpful and friendly, and as always, I'll be back next year for the Fringe!

Very nice hostel, very scotish building with the perfect view from the dorms.
Location is perfect, walking distance to everywhere and right in front of train station and a couple of blocks away from bus station; it's also in front of the airport shuttle bus stop.
Breakfast is decent, toasts, cereals and cofee. The bar is really good and you get discount in your drinks; this hostel also offers discount to ISIC card holders.

I recommend it

The location here is great, central to everything. Breakfast is nothing special but eatible. If you arent in to drinking and want a peacefull sleep...maybe choose somewhere else. If you do like a bit of fun and a drink...perfect spot.

FUN is the only word I can think of to describe my time at St Christophers Edinburgh!

The staff were friendly, and even though they were looking after a lot of guests, there was still a personal touch and feeling that they were aware of you staying in the hostel and wanting you to have a comfortable stay.

I thought it was good value; i had a pretty comfy bed, in a warm room (greatly appreciated for the fresh Edinburgh weather!), and the breakfast was good value considering it was included in the room rate.

There is also a comfy 'chill out' room with a big telly where you can watch dvds. I didn't get time to use this as I was too busy out enjoying brilliant Edinburgh, but I imagine this would be great if you had some spare time and wanted to recover after a big night.

As with the other St Christophers hostels I have stayed in, S.C Edinburgh did not disappoint when it came to socialising. All of my dorm mates were realyl friendly and we had a great time in the bar. There are 2 bars - one which is more laidback where brekky is served, the other is rowdier, great for a few drinks before and after a night out.

Edinburgh itself is a sensational destination. Sadly I only had 4 nights there and I just cannot wait to go back, and when I do, I will stay at St Christophers!
