“Clean, comfortable in an unbeatable location”
Reviewed 18 October 2013

We stayed for three nights on a recommendation from a relative. Our room was very spacious, nicely decorated and clean. It was about 90 steps to reach it but if you are reasonably fit, you soon get used to the climb. The guest house is in an excellent location - perfect if you arrive by public transport like we did. It is only a 3 minute walk from the Airlink Bus Stop and is right in the middle of a classy area of shops, bars and restaurants. The staff are friendly. Breakfast was nice but can get a little busy around 9am - and as the hot food is cooked to order, don't be in too much of a hurry or get up a bit earlier! This hotel is a perfect base for exploring the beautiful city of Edinburgh which has much to offer - don't miss the Castle and Royal Mile (20 min walk) ; Royal Yacht Britannia (get a bus to Ocean Terminal) and Mary King's Close - pre-book your tour here as it gets full-up especially at weekends (situated on the Royal Mile). Stroll in the Princes Street Gardens (2 min walk).

We've stayed in a quad room at the top level. Like what the other reviews said, the steps were quite overwhelming especially when we were carrying quite a bit of luggage. Rooms were reasonably clean though quite dated and we didn't like the blue lights in the toilet. The mattress which I slept on could be changed because it was sunken in on one side which left me with a backache. Breakfast was average and the serving was huge. All these shortcomings are outweighed by the fantastic location. The hotel is a very short walk to the shops along princes street and a bearable distance from the Waverly station too. There are a couple of food places around the area, which makes it really convenient.

Great hotel in a great central location. Room was clean and spacious. Bed a bit hard (room 7) but that's just my personal preference. Breakfast was lovely, good choices. Previous reviews stated a lot of steps (which there are) but this is detailed on their website. I have a stick but found the stairs okay, our room was on second floor and breakfast room on third. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.

I had not realized that this is where Kenneth Grahame (The Wind in the Willows) was born. The Castle View Guest House is a gem of a hotel in a good location. The room was comfortable and clean. The breakfast was outstanding! Best poached eggs I have had in a long time. The staff and management are very friendly and helpful.

We recently stayed at this guest house, and the location is really the only thing positive about this hotel. The rooms were a bit shabby, although clean. I had to place a towel over the threshold going into the bathroom, because where the tile met the carpet it was not finished, and I cut my foot on it. Also anytime you flushed the toilet, washed your hands in the sink or took a shower, it had a very loud fog horn sound that went on all night from other rooms. Also, you have to walk up 3 flights of stairs, not that bad considering your in the city, however the carpets looked very dated and worn, and the mattress sank right to the bed frame making it hard as a rock. Thank god It was only for one night, because we did not get any sleep at all. No phones in the room either, making this even less convenient. There was one staff member who was very pleasant, however he could not really assist with any of the things that were wrong with the unit. Needs updating, better bed, and newer linens. Could have some great potential.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street are very noisy at night with the local nightlife and pubs. There is no cast...

Room was clean although furniture a little outdated but decor very modern. Bed was hard but comfortable and had tea and coffee facilities as well and biscuits and mint humbugs!

The bathroom was very modern although personally I didn't like the blue lighting in the bathroom over the shower as it changed the colour of the room making it appear cold and even I looked blue in the mirror. Therefore we only used the light over the mirror.

Plenty of hot water, nice big soft towels and the room was warm and cosy. Free Wifi too!

In addition to this one of the best breakfasts, my only problem was not having milk on the table.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Edinburgh and a lot was due to the Castle View Guest House. The staff were friendly, the room large and comfy with views of both the Castle AND the Firth of Forth. Their varied breakfast was a great start to the day - includes a good Scottish breakfast and porridge.
Good location too - we walked with bags from the station & caught a local bus back to the airport - and it's close to all the sites & restaurants.
Would recommend this :)

Room Tip: Rooms at the top front have great views.
