Stayed for 3 nights durring our family vacation to scotland . Rooms were double ensuite This is university hostel accomodation converted into hotel during summer. Rooms were clean with all basic things available. The location is about 20 min walk from city center but very near to climb to arthur seat.Taxis are available at reception center. Breakfast is sumptious and very well spread. Overall very nice stay experience in budget category. Please note this is not regular hotel but part of university campus.

I stayed in Ewing Hall, in a single twin room. It's basically a single dorm room with twin bed, desk, phone, closet, and sink. There's also two bathrooms (shower, toilet, sink in each) for each section of the floor.

This hall was definitely not the newest but was clean enough if you consider you know you'll be staying in a dorm room. Nothing dirty, just a little used. There is also internet in the room for a charge and free Wi-fi in common use areas. My hall also had laundry facilities on the ground floor, which were coin-op. That's a pretty nice feature if you're on an extended stay.

The only real downside is that you are in a dorm, complete with the potential for loud noises. My room was right across from the elevator, which was very loud and kept running late into the night. Also, you can easily hear hall traffic and people out in the commons area. But for 29 pounds, you're not going to find a cheaper place to stay in Edinburgh that isn't completely fallen in. And Pollock Halls are far from it. Just know what you're getting into. This is not a normal hotel.

The free breakfast buffet was hot, plentiful, and offered a decent amount of choices. The staff at the reception desk were extremely friendly and helpful.

This is student dorms which may put some people of - but for me it has all one needs except for a double bed (there are two twins). The rooms are a decent size and include tea and coffee supplies and facilities. We didn't use it but communal kitchens are available if you want to cook in the evenings as well. You probably wont need to cook or eat much during the day because the large breakfast is excellent and has everything you might need - from full Scottish breakfast through to Muesli and yogurts not to forget welcome extras such as fruit and pastries. The halls are close to David's seat which is a tourist attraction in itself - to visit the center it is a bus ride or a 20 minute brisk walk.

Minuses - not many. They forgot to clean our room one day but the night staff did this for us and apologized. Also internet is an extra. .

Service was almost 100% good (except one person at reception who seemed overstressed and impatient - she gave us wrong information about wireless connection!). The room was excellent: very clean, very well-furnished. Wifi works well (but we had to pay 15 £ for five days - it _should_ be included these days). The corridors were much less clean than the room, though (something to improve). The location is beautiful, close to good pubs, the center of Edinburgh and the fanstastic Holyrood Park. Breakfast is good - a little too cafeteria-style for my taste. All in all, I would say it was a very good stay.

Room Tip: View to the mountains!

Plenty of free parking, efficient check-in, room better than expected, pleasant environment, very convenient for sightseeing, eat all you can breakfast included - all in all the best value in town.
We never had a problem finding a parking space when returning from a day trip. For seeing the sights in town there were always taxis at the door, although we used the buses. Reception gave us all the info we needed and with the stop virtually at the end of the street we never had to wait even 5 minutes ( but remember to have the exact fare as no change is given). Once we had found our way around we chose to walk to the Royal Mile rather than take the bus - about 15 minutes easy walking. We were suprised at how compact a capital city Edinburgh is - there is an awful lot you can see in a small area and the Pollock Halls are at the foot of Arthur's Seat from where you can see everything.
The only downside was the meal we had on our first night after a long journey. Rather than make the effort to find a restaurant we used the student bar but it was only a very average meal and the beer was the worst we had been served for years. There are many restaurants nearby and of course a good choice in town so this was not a problem.
Our double, en-suite room was a good size, had tv, phone, kettle and was cleaned daily. We had no problem with noisy neighbours. We felt very secure (swipe cards at all doors, gate monitored and 24 hour manned reception). All staff were very friendly.
Finally - the breakfasts. You help yourself to whatever you want and have as much as you want - cereals, porridge, fruit, cold meats and cheeses, full English, full Scottish etc. On the weekday everything went amazingly well with a large number of meals catering for many nationalities being served efficiently. At the weekend things became a little stretched at times with some crockery in short supply and maybe a wait for your egg to be cooked but really nothing worth complaining about.
So we remain very satisfied customers and will certainly stay there again whenever we return to Edinburgh. If you want luxury look elsewhere but if you simply want a convenient, clean, secure base to return to at the end of the day you cannot do better.

On arrival, staff are very helpful and polite, offering good advice, directions and a left-luggage service.

The rooms are, assumedly, used as student accommodation during term-time but nonetheless they were comfortable and very clean. The rooms are actually fairly spacious for a single traveller and come with towels, toileteries and a television.

The site uses a card-key system, which can actually be a bit of a pain when carrying luggage as all the internal and external doors require a swipe for access. Whilst this does provide a sense of security, it can actually bit somewhat irritating.

The campus is not too far away from the centre of Edinburgh and is located in a very attractive location at the foot of Holyrood. For the purposes of a conference or business trip, this is a very attractive location.

This is student accommodation (Baird house) so the beds are basic, walls are thin and some guests make noise in the halls and outside. My first room was on the first floor, above the main door where everyone smokes and the smoke came into my room. I asked for a room change and was given a lovely, quiet room on the third floor. The room was clean, with handbasin, towels, soap provided. Shower (down the hall) was very small, but pretty clean. Bring flip flops for the shower. No TV in the room. I had to pay ten pounds for internet for three days, which was annoying. The breakfasts were fabulous, everything you can imagine, including porridge and haggis. Don't know if this is normal, as i was here during a convention of some sort. Quick easy bus transport (10 minutes) to downtown. They kept my luggage for me, once I checked out, for a few hours, to save dragging it around town.
Bottom line...basic, clean, and affordable. I booked on a late booking site three days in advance and paid 28 pds per night. Unbeatable and I'll stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room NOT above the front door, facing a courtyard if possible.
