Pollock Halls - Edinburgh First

Though most of the staff were friendly, our problem with our room was not addressed. Our shower did not drain, and though maintenance was requested, it was not fixed during our stay. We ended up standing in water while showering, and had to repeatedly turn off the water and wait several minutes for it to drain to avoid flooding the bathroom.

Internet services were expensive, considering the cost of the room (£1 for 15 minutes on a public computer [there was usually a wait], and £5 for one day's access - not based on actual usage, just time - on a private computer).

Additionally, our room was not cleaned after our first night. Though someone came in to make the beds, the rubbish bins were left full and our shower dirty.

First of all locals know this place as a Pollock Halls, not Edinburgh First. Secondly there is Holyrood Road from 5-10 min. walk to north from Holyrood PARK Road where the hotel locates. Don't confound these streets because Holyrood PARK Road cannot be found from city center maps. This way you avoid my hassle.

From the airport you can take local bus 35 but it takes looong time to city center (about an hour). It's nice suburban sightseeing but I won't recommend it if you are in a hurry. You're warned.

The hotel rooms are student apartments that are used as a hotel rooms during their holidays. If you look at the pictures shown here you understand it better. It's a big complex. Clean, simple, chipboard furniture. Water pressure is typical Brittish standard (these people don't know how to build HPAC) but they have Arran Aromatics' soap which is luxurious. But my purpose at being hotel is to sleep not spend my time there so rooms are very suitable. Oh and quit too.

Breakfast is what you could expect from Brittish student cafeteria. Bacon, eggs, sausages, yogurt... Very greasy and no salads but you live with it.

Location is about 20 min. walk from the center and there is good bus connections. It's located just near the Arthur's Seat which I recommend at the sunset. Beautiful views 360 degrees! Note that Arthur's Seat is surrounded by large golf field from the south so check from which direction you go there.

Summa summarium: student accommodation changed into hotel rooms. Clean, quit and simple. Good for those who aren't to keen on luxury.

We were originally supposed to stay in a hall of residence closer into the centre of town but we were bumped off here. No apology just the promise of an upgrade (ha ha!). They did not tell us in advance so we had to carry all our luggage another 20 mins.

Our room was very basic and not at all worth the amount of money we paid for it. Compared with the place we'd stayed the night before which was cheaper our room in Pollock Halls was awful.

We were also woken up at 8.30 in the morning by a group of builders drilling in the room below us - it felt like they were coming through the walls. We called reception to let them know/ask them kindly if they could do something about it and they said there was nothing they could do about it. Builders were not their responsibility (their responsibility was taking our money!). We went over to reception to ask someone to come over so they could hear the noise for themselves but they refused. It was ridiculous and they never apologised.

They are clearly used to dealing with students (who I think deserve politeness anyway) and therefore treat holiday guests with disrespect.

We will not stay there again.

Stayed for 3 nights durring our family vacation to scotland . Rooms were double ensuite This is university hostel accomodation converted into hotel during summer. Rooms were clean with all basic things available. The location is about 20 min walk from city center but very near to climb to arthur seat.Taxis are available at reception center. Breakfast is sumptious and very well spread. Overall very nice stay experience in budget category. Please note this is not regular hotel but part of university campus.

I stayed in Ewing Hall, in a single twin room. It's basically a single dorm room with twin bed, desk, phone, closet, and sink. There's also two bathrooms (shower, toilet, sink in each) for each section of the floor.

This hall was definitely not the newest but was clean enough if you consider you know you'll be staying in a dorm room. Nothing dirty, just a little used. There is also internet in the room for a charge and free Wi-fi in common use areas. My hall also had laundry facilities on the ground floor, which were coin-op. That's a pretty nice feature if you're on an extended stay.

The only real downside is that you are in a dorm, complete with the potential for loud noises. My room was right across from the elevator, which was very loud and kept running late into the night. Also, you can easily hear hall traffic and people out in the commons area. But for 29 pounds, you're not going to find a cheaper place to stay in Edinburgh that isn't completely fallen in. And Pollock Halls are far from it. Just know what you're getting into. This is not a normal hotel.

The free breakfast buffet was hot, plentiful, and offered a decent amount of choices. The staff at the reception desk were extremely friendly and helpful.

This is student dorms which may put some people of - but for me it has all one needs except for a double bed (there are two twins). The rooms are a decent size and include tea and coffee supplies and facilities. We didn't use it but communal kitchens are available if you want to cook in the evenings as well. You probably wont need to cook or eat much during the day because the large breakfast is excellent and has everything you might need - from full Scottish breakfast through to Muesli and yogurts not to forget welcome extras such as fruit and pastries. The halls are close to David's seat which is a tourist attraction in itself - to visit the center it is a bus ride or a 20 minute brisk walk.

Minuses - not many. They forgot to clean our room one day but the night staff did this for us and apologized. Also internet is an extra. .
