“It's more than location”
Reviewed 3 October 2011

As a realtor friend once said, “It’s location, location, location.” No, wait a minute. It’s location and the personality of the host. Oh, it’s also carefully made, delectable breakfasts. Gerald’s Place is a charming B&B located on the edge of New Town and an easy walk to Old Town and restaurants. Furnished with guests in mind, PC laptops are provided in each room, as is coffee, tea, and Whisky. Gerald is a concerned and conscientious host who provides great breakfasts of homemade muesli as well as a full Scottish Fry up, including Haggis, if you like. He also dispenses local knowledge, if you ask. If you prefer a corporate B&B with detached impersonal service, this place isn’t for you. If you prefer and engaged host, an attractive facility, and a convenient location you’ll like Gerald’s Place.

We stayed in Edinburgh, Sept.9,10,and11 at Geraldsplace. Gerald is quite a host. He is such a gentleman and wants to meet your every need. His place is very cosy and coveniently located in the heart of Edinburgh. We were able to walk to the Royal Mile and other attractions. Gerald also referred us to great restaurants frequented by locals. I would not hesitate to stay at Geraldsplace again. In fact, Gerald is such a fine man that we have invited him to stay with us if he ever gets to Colorado.

We spent four beautiful days in Edinburgh and our stay at Gerald's Place was one of the highlights. Our welcome was incredibly warm and friendly, the room and appointments were superior, and the location was absolutely perfect for our plans, which were simply to walk everywhere. Gerald made everything so easy, and his warmth, humor, and attention to detail made our visit to Edinburgh very special. You can tell that he genuinely enjoys the company of the guests in his home. I would stay there again in a heartbeat, and can recommend Gerald's Place without any hesitation to anyone who is looking for a top of the line B&B.

Room Tip: One room is en suite, the other is not, but has its own bathroom nearby. Didn't really make a d...

We had a wonderful 4 night stay at Gerald's Place which was highly recommended by friends of ours. It was cosy, warm, friendly, extremely well- appointed (where else would you find a laptop in your room so that you can access your mail for FREE?) and very conveniently situated. We simply walked everywhere. Gerald was a wonderful host, extremely knowledgeable and helpful and we really appreciated being able to buy bus tickets from him, or him arranging a taxi for us. His breakfasts were delicious! How could one resist the smell of home-baked bread in the house, the organic mueslis that he specially puts together, the oats with raisins and cinnamon, the preserves and yoghurts, the fresh fruit...all of it organic and healthy. We felt totally at home and Gerald is now a friend.

I really do not know where to start in writing this summary of our exceptional stay with Gerald at his truly wonderful B&B. I don't know how to put everything into words that are accurate and yet come across as believable. Because staying at Geraldsplace is something uniquely special among all the many special places we're fortunate to have stayed. It goes beyond the perfect location, the supremely comfortable furnishings and amenities, the delicious breakfasts, and the incredible value for money. There's something -- actually a very big something -- intangible that stays with you long after you leave. The feeling of having made a friend, of being treated with such warm hospitality and sincere kindness, of being welcomed into someone's home and truly being made to feel welcome. Sure, Gerald and I had exchanged several e-mails over the months leading up to our stay, but nothing could have prepared me for how quickly and naturally I would come to think of Gerald as much more a dear old friend than just a generous and affable host. I regret that I am writing this review a full year after our stay (life got a bit crazy immediately after returning from our wonderful holiday in Scotland), but the amazing memories of our time at Geraldsplace are as fresh as can be. That's the kind of indelible effect Gerald and Geraldsplace have on you.

All of the praise you read on TripAdvisor is true. I promise you it is not exaggerated. That may be hard to believe, but it's true. Gerald is the friendliest, kindest, most knowledgeable, most interesting, and funniest (it seems like he has an endless number of wonderful stories and insights to share) host you will ever have the good fortune to meet. i arrived a day before my partner, and I couldn't wait for him to meet Gerald. I looked forward to seeing Gerald each morning and talking over breakfast, about what we had done the previous day, what we were planning to do that day, and just about whatever topics came up over his absolutely delicious and generous breakfasts. When it finally came time to leave, we knew we were really going to miss Gerald (and wished we could have taken him with us on our journey through the Highlands). When's the last time you said that about your host?

I can't think of any place I'd rather stay when I return to Edinburgh. Sure, other hotels and B&B's may also have comfortable beds, wonderful food, lots of amenities, and convenient locations. But only Geraldsplace has Gerald.

My mum and I stayed in the twin room at Gerald's Place on the 4th and 5th September 2011. Everything was "spot on" from the warm, friendly welcome to the cleanliness and comfort of the accommodation. The bathroom was stocked with beautiful toiletries from hand cream to hairspray and there was a varied choice of speciality tea and coffee in the room. Gerald even leaves a special nightcap for his guests. There was a great choice for breakfast which was beautifully cooked by Gloria. I intend to go back with my husband.

Gerald is the most charming host we've met during our two-week trip. His B&B is in a fine location in New Town, convenient to all of Edinburgh's major attractions. But the main draw is Gerald himself. We became family the instant we stepped through the doorway. He fussed over my sprained ankle, made sure the fridge held organic milk, shared stories about his grandchildren, poured the good whisky, and washed our clothes(!). We stayed up each night talking about anything and everything - the Bolshoi Ballet in Tokyo, lawn-mowing equipment, iPad applications, great dinners we've eaten, child-rearing philosophies - and continued the conversation over a swell breakfast of homemade bread, eggs, smoked salmon, fresh fruit, and hand-mixed granola. Yes, I saw the Castle, but I will always remember Gerald as the true king of Scotland.

Room Tip: There are only two, so don't sweat it.
