“Excellent choice”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2011

Me and my friend wanted something comfortable, but in-expensive, and we couldn't have made a better choice for our 4 nights in Edinburgh. The hotel is very well located near Edinburgh castle. Some of the rooms obviously have a magnificient view towards the castle although our room was facing the inner yard (and it didn't bother us).

We arrived to the hotel by taking the Airlink bus from the airport to Waverley Bridge, and easily walked from there with a map (yes, it was uphills and downhills along the way, but nothing too awful). Walking towards the places of interest always required a walk uphill, but we also sometimes used the sightseeing busses, onto which you can hop-on right opposite the hotel, and hop-off where ever along the route or change to another one with a different route. We highly recommend the Royal Edinburgh Ticket for the sightseeing!

The hotel room was very neat and tidy. We both had a queen-size bed, which felt luxury, and different pillows to choose from. The bed was very comfortable. Bathroom was clean and welcoming with the Apex duck and fresh towels and toiletries.

We ate at the bistro there one evening, and food and service were excellent. The bar there is also very comfortable, had drinks there one night. Breakfast wasn't included in our stay at the hotel, but we did eat it twice during our stay. Very tasty and lovely with the wonderful view to the Edinburgh Castle. However, one minus was that when we were checking out, we were asked to pay for one morning's breakfast for two although we had already paid everything. They did believe us after a short talk.

Good points:
- The hotel has a swimming pool and gym area
- Breakfast is decent
- Decent room size
- Room service is good
- Central location (view of The Castle)

Not so good points:
- Small bathroom
- No airco
- The hall ways are narrow, badly decorated and make me feel like I'm in a prison or student dorm

Overall this was a very high standard of stay with a great deal of thought going into fitting out the room. The rubber duck in the bathroom was a nice touch - thank you. Very comfortable, very chic and perfect for a business or leisure trip, Because this is not a big hotel then breakfast is to order rather than from a hot buffet. I had Eggs Benedict and they were perfect! Staff were friendly and very helpful. 10 mins walk from here into the Centre on the level. WiIl definitely stay here again.

We had an overnight at the Apex International & enjoyed our stay. Check in was quick & the staff were very pleasant. Although our room wasn't ready, we enjoyed a relaxing drink the bar while we waited. The reception area & bar are nice & modern. When we went to our room, we noticed the lobby and room were very warm. However thankfully fans were provided in the room otherwise we couldn't have slept that night for the heat. We also upgraded our room to castle view which had a small terrace. The view was amazing! The beds were comfortable and clean. The bathroom had a bath and shower & elemis products. It was pretty clean but the shower had some hair from a previous guest & some slight dirty marks in the corners but the shower head was retricted movement so that may have made it difficult to clean corners! We paid for bed & breakfast and went to the Heights restaurant on 5th floor with castle views for breakfast. The options were continental and full breakfast, toast & tea/coffee. The cutlery & cups/ plates were not spotlessly clean but probably the result of a dishwasher rather than dirty. Staff for breakfast were a bit slow but we weren't in a huge rush but I did notice other guests becoming impatient! The full Scottish breakfast was ok but I think rather than all being cooked fresh it was pre-cooked & warmed up as the potato scone was hard & dry. Overall the food was acceptable but not necessarily worth it. There are pubs across the road on Grassmarket that u could go to & get probably better food! Although overall the hotel was nice & clean. The hotel also gave us a bottle of champagne since we were there for our wedding anniversary which was really nice of them.

We booked two rooms for three adults but upon our arrival the receptionist could only "find" one reservation for one person!
For the inconvenience of having to wait in order to get a second room we got an "upgrade" for one room. This room was larger than the usual rooms but hot and stuffy, without air-conditioning. The only possibility to let fresh air in was by means of opening a door onto a kind of balcony that was shared by other hotel guests mainly for smoking which let the smoke waft into our room when the door was open and was facing onto busy Grassmarket with a bottle recycling place beneath our room. The bed was okay but the duvet was fit for a cold winters day not for a hotel that is generally over heated, and room temperatures are around 30°C. The state of the bathroom was plainly disgusting. Mould in the showers the toilet only flushing every other time and the floor in dire need of a good scrubbing. There was no ventilation int the bathroom and as it didn't have a window odours and steam were wafting through the bedroom.
Breakfast was nothing for the faint hearted. At the buffet it was a task to find a clean plate that hadn't still remnants of the previous guests's breakfast clinging onto it. The coffee tasted like cooked peat and the milk jugs were sprinkled (inside and out) with brown.
matter of uncertain origin.
The hotel is very proud of it's swimming pool. When my daughter and I got there we had to sign for a locker key that didn't fit to any of the ladies lockers. The changing room was a disgrace. Used towels and kleenex on the floor in huge piles left by previous users because the baskets to collect used towelling and the waste paper basket were overflowing.

The Apex is situated in Grassmarket - close to the castle and in Old Town. New Town is a gentle 15 minute walk. It is a lovely area with lots of pubs. The rooms are nicely appointed and the staff is top notch especially Fiona. They are known for their rubber duckies. Their restaurants are great with the Heights giving you a 5th floor view of the castle. This also serves as the breakfast room. This was our 5th visit and we'll be back again next year.

Room Tip: We like the rooms in the front but the lower floors can be noisy after the pubs close.
