“Great location but a some street noise”
Reviewed 23 February 2012

We stayed at the Apex International Hotel in Grassmarket in February 2012. We booked an advance purchase/non-refundable rate that was fairly reasonable and included breakfast. The hotel staff was very friendly and accommodating, and the common areas were nice. The room was a good size compared to other European hotels, and we had a fantastic view of the castle from our room. There are two restaurants where breakfast is offered, but we only went to the one on the top floor of the hotel, which has a great view of the castle. The food was good, but I wouldn't say it was great. The bathroom is a good size and the shower was good - good water temperature and pressure. There is a pool in the hotel, but it is a little strange because it has full windows on the street, which is a major thoroughfare where anyone walking by can look in. The hotel provided an oscillating fan in the room closet, which we used as a "white noise" machine to block out the street noise. It was quite effective and I appreciated that it was there. All in all, I'd recommend this hotel as a good place to say that is centrally located and has clean rooms and friendly staff.

Very spacious room, large bed, 42 inch telly - wonderful room. Breakfast is at the top of the hotel and the view of the castle has to be one of the best views ever and certainly cheers up the weary business traveller. We stayed here at my colleagues request as he wanted the smoked haddock and poached egg for breakfast! There was a huge choice of freshly cooked food and a continental buffet. The Grass market location is very good, central and plenty of nearby restaurants and pubs. Its location is good for business and tourists alike. And you get a rubber duck to take home!

Room Tip: Even the bottom of the range rooms are excellent but you can pay extra to have a view of the castle.

Great location with an even better view. (Make sure you reserve a room with a view). Lots of restaurants, easy for business and tourist. Been there three or four times for both business and 'tourism'. Glad to have found it.

Room Tip: Get a view!

Stayed there for a weekend. Great location on the grassmarket and a few minutes walk from the Royal Mile. Breakfast excellent though we waited a long time to be served. We only got 3 bits of toast between the two of us which wasn't much. Fantastic view of the castle from the restaurant window. Friendly staff throughout the hotel who were very helpful. We checked in a couple of hours early and they kept our bags for us. We wish we had paid more for a castle view as we looked out over the car park. There was quite a lot of noise coming from the grassmarket but this is to be expected. Service in the bar was quite slow - we had to dtdmttajjm cancel drinks that were ordered 20 minutes previously. Bathroom wasn't the cleanest: there were hairs in the bathroom and our room hadn't been tidied much on the Saturday.

I was staying at thus hotel with a group of 26 visitors from the United States, I was their tour guide in Scotland. On arrival, we had a warm welcome from reception but a few rooms were not quite ready but we were offered and accepted complimentary drinks from the bar. The barman Norbert was very good with my visitors suggesting some local ales and whiskies to try.
We dined the first evening in the Metro restaurant in the hotel, the service, food and staff were excellent. The Corporate Manager, Ewan, checked with me that everything was to our taste. I commented that in Apex Hotels there was usually a complimentary rubber duck in the bathrooms (a different colour for different hotels, for guests to collect). He said that the PM, David Cameron had been at the hotel that day and taken the remaining ducks back to London, my guests were disappointed but next day Fiona at reception had managed to acquire a few for my guests to have, a very thoughtful touch. Breakfast was taken in the Heights restaurant, again a warm welcome, very efficient staff excellent service and a delicious choice of foods to start the day with stunning views of Edinburgh Castle and the surrounding Old Town. My group also used the meeting rooms.Altogether a rather good hotel in a great central location for business or pleasure. Wonderful for a city break in Edinburgh.Enjoy

Room Tip: Ask for a castle view room if possible otherwise you look onto the trear of the hotel with car park...

The location is great as you are close to some great pubs and restaurants but that means there is some noise at night.
The restaurant was superb. Briliant view and food. Shame they wouldn't let us sit next to the window when we were, at it's busiest, one of 3 couples in the place. The tables were booked but we were there at 6.30 and they weren't booked until after 8pm so it's a shame there wasn't better communication as we would have been happy with a deadline to be out by as we were out before anyone showed up for the tables. Staff were lovely though and couldn't do enough for us.
The room was lovely but the carpet wasn't that clean - something my husband noticed in the restaurant too. Also, there was damaged trim on a bedside table and wonky shelf. The DVD rental system was a great touch and working out how to use the DVD was good fun too!
Reception staff were lovely and very friendly.
I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We didn't have a castle view but we were to the side of the hotel, so had great views across Edi...

Stayed at the Apex Internation during February half term - with my husband and five year old son.

Great start, with a friendly welcome and a gift bag for my son. Receptionist was really lovely and took the time to say hello to the boy as well as the grown ups. The room was good - nice size, two very comfortable queen size beds. The bathroom was bigger than other hotels I've stayed in and nice and clean. The shower was fantastic - if it had been possible for me to smuggle it out under my jacket and fit it at home I would have done!

It looks like they have picked up on concerns about queues at breakfast, as there were two options for us - we could either go to the Heights and have table service, or as we were a family, they recommended the buffet option in the downstairs Metro. This worked well for us - and certainly made child wrangling and eating a lot more easy.

We only ate at the hotel in the evening once - and to be honest we were a little disappointed. The food was average - perfectly edible, but just slightly the wrong side of school dinner for me. However, we did not complain at the time, so they had no opportunity to make things better for us. The desserts were very good though.

My husband and son had a ball in the swimming pool - which was quite busy - but then again, it's half term, the hotel is packed - what did we expect! The boychild wanted to go back, which I think tells it's own tale.

We had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay - and would compliment the hotel on it's friendly staff team.
