“Great location!”
Reviewed 1 November 2012 via mobile

This hotel is ideally located for tourists visiting this great city! Lots of pubs and restaurants nearby, rooms clean, staff friendly and great wifi (watched the SF Giants win the World Series one morning!). Didn't have breakfast so can't comment on it. Would stay again.

The Apex is in a great location, right in the middle of Grassmarket, a short walk to lots of bars and to the castle. It does feel like it's part way through a renovation though - the lifts are a bit clunky, some of the paintwork is a bit rough and ready, and on the first night we stayed we were all woken at 4.30 am by a fire alarm set off by rainwater leaking through the roof.

That said, the staff were all very friendly and helpful, and the occasional issues we had with our room (eg a failed lightbulb in the bathroom) were seen to very quickly. Breakfast on the morning after the fire alarm was something of a scrum, as everyone in the hotel appeared to rise as one and rush the place five minutes before breakfast was scheduled to end, but the staff remained calm throughout. Some of the other reviews here mention breakfast being awful, but I had no complaints - maybe the vegetarian options are better than what the carnivores are subjected to. Breakfast isn't compulsory; although the view is good from the restaurant window, I'd recommend you venture out and try some of the other options on Grassmarket rather than stay in the hotel every day.

The swimming pool is nice, but small; the gym is a tiny, windowless room in the basement with a couple of running machines, a rowing machine and a few other bits of equipment; but then hotel gyms are never the most pleasant of places.

The room itself was very comfortable. The bathroom seemed rather gloomy until the lightbulb was replaced, and you get a free rubber ducky, so nothing to complain about there. Beds are a bit soft compared to what I'm used to, but that's not a terrible sin. Televisions, strangely, take 18 seconds to power on. When the maintenance man told us this I thought it was an unusually specific amount of time, but it turned out to be exactly the case - I suppose that's the Scottish scientific tradition in action, although why a television should take 18 seconds to power on is quite mysterious. Only a problem if you enjoy rapidly and repeatedly turning televisions on and off again.

We checked in at the same time as a cavalcade of pensioners. I found that a bit surprising because the Apex International has two sets of stairs before you reach the lift. If you don't want to walk up lots of steps every day, I would think the next Apex down the street (less than a hundred yards, and a good refuge on a rainy morning when the fire alarm is ringing) might be more suitable, as there's no massive ascent to reach reception.

Wifi was free and worked all day long. I shouldn't be excited and amazed by this, but the Apex shone here when so many other hotels let me down or left me frustrated.

In general, then, a very enjoyable place to stay. I think it still needs a bit of polish to justify the 4 star rating on the wall outside, but it's not far off.

Room Tip: Rooms facing Grassmarket are going to be noisier (but with a better view) than those facing the back...

Great location on Grassmarket and as such busy with tourists by day and party revellers by night. On this occassion I fell into the latter camp, so perfect.

I had room 3028 which was very nice; two double queen beds and a big flat-screen TV. Bathroom nice and clean. Very good blackout curtains to maximise that long lie...

Downside, and for the price of this hotel, was the breakfast and lack of attentive staff. The cooked food had clearly been out for a couple of hours. We thought the chef might have cooked the breakfast before he went home the night before ;-) The potato scones were described by a friend as being like "roof tiles". Tea and coffee from large flasks - awful ! Cheese and cold meats just lying out and getting rubbery. Quite frankly I have had better breakfasts at a Holiday Inn Express for half the price.

Room Tip: Recommend you maybe stay there room only. There are a few places nearby to get breakfast.

Thanks for your review, SuperOz. I was glad you enjoyed your stay with us but disappointed to read that you felt our breakfast product did not meet expectations. I have discussed your comments with my Executive Chef and Restaurant Manager to ensure that we make immediate improvements in this area.
Kind regards

The International (not to be confused with the Apex City next door) is a nice hotel in a great location. It has the added advantage of a gym, pool and sauna, which is a real luxury after a day walking up and down the hills of Edinburgh.
Our room was the standard chain hotel fare, a nice big bed, two comfy chairs and a good bathroom. Overall the decor is a bit tired, but it was clean throughout.
We didn't have breakfast but have dined there before and loved the views of the castle from the fifth floor restaurant. The ground floor restaurant is a bit souless and we have never fancied it.
The staff are all friendly and helpful, which reflects well on the hotel as this is not always the case in big hotels.
Overall this is a good place to stay and does some brilliant deals on last minute rooms, making it good value in a city as expensive as Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front will be noisy but those on the back are pretty quiet.

We booked in advance and got a double with two queen-sized beds for my husband, myself and our twelve year old for around half price. On the plus side the hotel has a great location with everything in walking distance, great view of castle ( although not requested when booking) and helpful, courteous staff. Also good parking and nice to have a pool in a city centre hotel. The continental breakfast had good variety and quality but the cooked breakfast was mass- produced and had been under the heat lamps so long the food was still frying and drying on the plate. This was regardless of the time we ate. Room was clean and well equipped but cramped as was bathroom. Biggest problem was THE NOISE. The room was too warm to sleep with windows shut but the noise from the traffic all night and the pub goers up to about one in the morning was horrendous and this was out of season during the week! So if you can't sleep with ear plugs or are disturbed by noise think carefully before booking.

Room Tip: if you want a night's sleep skip the castle view and go to back of hotel

Got vouchers for Xmas for this hotel & restaurant & was delighted. Location brill. Hotel room lovely. Wasn't impressed with service though. It was valentine weekend. We wer to check in @ 2 when got there at 2.40 room wasn't ready. No big deal as hotel was busy. But we did wait 40 mins. We booked valentine special with champagne & chocs. We had to ask reception for it. Room was beautiful with castle view. Beds & linen was the best. At night we used restaurant. Food was lovely & view was nice but the look of restaurant it's self wasn't good, bland, no tables set, didn't feel like a restaurant. Was like an empty room with few White tables in it. The reason for this probs is we ate at 8.30 but wasn't very comfortable surroundings. In the morning we went for breakfast... WELL that was terrible. We waited in a long queue for 1 hour waiting to be seated. We kept thinking it wouldnt be long.. No one came up the line of people to tell them or give them option of room service. Awful service in my eyes for 4 star hotel price we payed. Tables were a mess with lots of unhappy customers. Was a very bad end to our stay. Although a few things ruined our stay I would still stay again. Even although breakfast was nice i wouldn't get it again.

Room Tip: Room with view

The Apex is superbly located close to Edinburgh Waverley station, easily walked with a suitcase. A short walk to almost anywhere you are likely to want to go, but at a better price than the Royal Mile hotels. The breakfast is a little sparse for the price but you can;t have everything.
