“Nice hotel”
Reviewed 21 November 2013

Lovely view from my well appointed room. Quite a bit of noise from the street but nothing too terrible. Nicest breakfast I've had for a while [on the first morning eggs benedict]. My Scottish breakfast on the second day was dried out and nasty and was sent back. I think it had been left under a heat lamp whilst my colleagues breakfast was cooked!

A long weekend in Edinburgh involves sight seeing, restaurants, pubs, whisky, walking, museums, walking and whisky.
And some whisky.
A decent place to relax and unwind is essential.
The Apex International is a chain hotel and suffers from all of the vagaries that come with this - peculiarly empty, overly large reception and bar areas, bland breakfasts and rooms that are clean and almost, but not quite, in need of a lick of paint.
There is always something that just needs to be considered but gets missed each and every time, whether it's the flick of a duster on the bedside lamp or remembering to replace the lightbulb on the bathroom spotlights - kind of a 7 out of 10 situation, which is a little disappointing given the hotel's 4 * status.
However, the Apex International has two points in its favour - possibly the most ridiculously comfortable bed I have ever slept in and a view of Edinburgh castle from the fourth floor rooms that is hyper-real - like a 3D IMAX version, but in real life.
Oh, and the shower was hot, powerful and roomy.
And you get a free rubber duck to take home - not necessarily a deal breaker, but a quaint touch.
Would I stay there again?
Yes, and I plan to when I return to Edinburgh in December, 2014.
I just hope that the same lightbulb isn't still in need of replacement when I return... now, that would be depressing.

Room Tip: Odd numbered rooms overlook the castle - wow. Even numbered rooms overlook a brick wall / car park...

I stayed recently at this hotel with family for a special anniversary. My experience from start to finish was outstanding. A member of my group was fortunate enough to be upgraded to a deluxe room with a patio terrace and outstanding view of the castle, for which money could not put a price on, definately the best view from any hotel in the city. The staff in every aspect of the hotel were welcoming, helpfull and professional. Cooked breakfast in the morning was freshly served at your table, not buffet style but fresh and of quality ingredients. Due to other commitments we did not dine at the hotel, but the friend who recommended this hotel confirmed that the meal she had previously had was excellent and of a very fair price. The bar staff were very attentive and went out of their way to ensure you were looked after. This was by far the best hotel I have stayed in for a long time and cannot recommend them highly enough!

Room Tip: Try and go for an upgrade, if you get castle view on the 4th floor you have hit the jackpot.

The APEX International is an upper class holiday or good business hotel well located in Edinburgh. It combines good quality rooms, with a range of faclities depending on price, with excellent dining facilities. The staff are always helpful and very friendly. Car parking is provided but at a cost and the car park is interestingly tricky to negotiate - best not to bring one. Situated in the Grassmarket is has splendid views of the Castle and everywhere in central Edinburgh is within walking distance.

Room Tip: Weekends in summer maybe best to avoid facing the Grassmarket as it can be noisy on the lower floors

I have always stayed at the Apex Waterloo in Edinburgh, but my dates were not available and so decided to try the Apex International instead. Well I was not disappointed at all. We opted to upgrade to a balcony room and what a view. The hotel is in a great location with stunning views of the Castle and Grassmarket. As usual Apex have excellent standards for service and cleanliness. The breakfast was also very good in Heights restaurant - very relaxing again with stunning views of the Castle. I only wish we booked 2 nights. Can't wait to return. Thanks to Peter on reception for making us feel so welcome.....

We had our last night in Scotland at this hotel on 6 October 2013 after visiting the Highlands and Islands. The view from the top floor diningroom overlooking the castle was spectacular! The staff were really helpful and friendly despite the fact that they had a large conference going on at the time. A very limited view from our bedroom but quiet enough and we didn't spend much time there. I liked the touch of the Apex rubber duck to take with us even if my photo didn't win the competition!

Room Tip: Our room was very convenient for the restaurant as it was on the 5th floor but if you want a view yo...

I stayed there couple of time, first one being in 2011 and second just 3 months ago in Aug 2013. My first experience there was great, in terms of room and service although I changed room on the second day as 2nd floor was really annoying as it faces the Grassmarket which tends to be full during weekends until late hours. However, my most recent stay in August 2013 was less appealing as the room was bit small and had no necessities such as slippers, shower cap, soap etc..Luckily I stayed there one night only so it was not a big deal. However, the staff there were really nice and when I informed of this upon check out, they apologised. I got a 20 percent discount voucher which came in handy as I used to to cover cost of room service in another Apex hotel (Waterloo). Breakfast is really good and the view from top floor restaurant is amazing.

Room Tip: The higher floor you can get, the better sleeping experience
