I had no conerns at staying at the Apex as I had stayed at one in London a few times and thought it was great. However the Apex International Edinburgh wasn't up to the same standard.

The common areas are lovely and very modern yet welcoming and the check in staff were very helpful. We had been sent an e-mail offering an upgrade to a superior room but found out upon check in that we weren't in time and the rooms were full. This became more disapointing as we entered our room. First impressions of the room were ok but as we put our things down we were not impressed. Hugely important to me is having a safe for our keys and documents etc which this room didn't have. I have never stayed in a hotel without a safe so I was quite shocked. I called the front desk to be told only superior rooms have a safe of which they had none available. I did complain as I thought for a 4 star hotel in the city this was a standard feature in a room. Moving on from safe-gate, the finishings in the hotel were poor. There were 2 seats in the room that were very marked and looked dirty as well as being broken and threadbare; the bed was sloped and very uncomfortable; the furnishing were tired and the bathroom had mildrew in a few places. This just wasn't what I had experienced in London.

The staff are great however and I returned before the second night of our 2 night stay to a safe in a cupboard so I was very grateful for the effort.

The pool is a nice thing to have in a central city hotel and the bar is well stocked and cosy.

The location is perfect for the castle and the royal mile also.

In conclusion, a bad room made for an ok stay. I would only book a superior if returning but I would more likely try another hotel.

Room Tip: Spend the extra on the Delux or Superior - it wasn't much and from sneaky looks on the way out o...

The rooms were nice, breakfast was really good, the swimming pool was a great extra, and the workout room was small but equipped well. The hotel is in a fantastic location, near tourist attractions, restaurants, and downtown Edinburgh. Our family of four stayed in a family room - which is a room with two two-person beds. It worked well for us.

Stayed here for one night after going to see the Lion King. Room was clean but not overly big, fine for one night though. We didn't have any issues with noise from the street, as other reviewers have mentioned, but we were there midweek so perhaps it is noisier at the weekend. Within easy reach of city centre, around 15-20 mins walk. Breakfast was delicious, plenty of choice and great value if you pre-book.

We booked the 2 day package which included the New Years eve gala ball. We upgraded to a room overlooking tbe castle. Good size with a balcony. Breakfast in The Heights restaurant was very nice even though it was very busy with a queue for tables at times. Staff were very polite and helpful. The gala ball includes a champagne reception, 5 course dinner, cellidh and disco. You are also piped out to the Grassmarket at midnight to watch the fireworks over the castle. It was a great way to see in 2014.

Room Tip: Book a room overlooking the castle

Just back from a short break to Edinburgh with my wife & family. The hotel was fantastic with great views of the castle & a breakfast to die for. The location was brill with several family friendly pubs across the road & attractions just a short stroll away. Only downside of my weekend (which has nothing to do with the hotel) was that most of Edinburgh pubs don't let kids in unless having a meal. We got turned away from several establishments & couldn't even get served soft drinks.

View from the hotel bedroom and restaurant was great. Service was good. the car park was £5 per day/night. Service was good and all facilities are great.
Best thing is the location surrounded by tourist attractions, nice bars, restaurants. near to night clubs so no need for taxi's.
I didnt have breakfast here, i went to the italian across the road or the many cafes within 2 mins walk.

Stayed over one night just after New Year with family and grandchildren. Rooms were a good size with two queen sized beds. We had adjacent rooms on the first floor overlooking the street and castle. Stunning views, but we were to pay later! The kids went swimming in the pool and had a great time. The lighting was poor especially as it got dark outside, and the flooring around the area was dangerously slippery. There are signs indicating this however, but one had to be very aware walking up and down the stairs to the pool. As more people arrived, it was obvious that the seating was inadequate. Two recliners and a bench in the entire area. We didn't eat in the hotel, but had a drink in the bar, which was small but nice. During the night, we were all awoken by the shouts and noise from people on the street outside, which lasted until early dawn! This wasn't helped by the fact that the window wouldn't stay closed in one of the rooms and didn't make for a good start to the day. The staff were very helpful, the rooms were clean and the bathroom was updated. We agreed that we would stay again, but ask for rooms on the opposite side, despite the view!
