The staff here are amazingly helpful and friendly. We had a room on the 4th floor overlooking the castle. The castle view was wonderful and was the same seen from the Heights restaurant where we breakfasted. Breakfast was excellent. The Wifi connection worked well, and our bathroom was spacious and clean. The style of the public areas reminded us of the 1970's maybe this is currently fashionable. However it was frustating that for our 2 night stay only one lift was working.Apparently it had been broken for a few days. I think even on the 4th floor warm weekends maybe be noisy as it overlooks the Grassmarket an area of pubs and restaurants and there was no apparent airconditioning in the bedroom requiring a window/door to be open.

Room Tip: A Castle view is essential

The Apex International is right in the heart of Edinburgh. We were greeted by stunning morning views of the castle every time we walked out of the front door!

Pretty much everything of interest is within walking distance of the hotel.

The Metro restaurant which is the cheaper of the two restaurants was a tad expensive but the food was absolutely fantastic! 5 stars for the quality of the food. Cooked to perfection!

The hotel's spa facilities are lovely. The pool has some really nice, romantic blue lighting under the water and has very smooth, relaxing music playing at all times (nice and quietly in the background of course). There is a fantastic sauna.

All of the hotel staff were lovely! They asked us about our day, recommended places and generally had a smile for us at all times!

The room was very nice and incredibly comfortable. The bed was amazing! Nice big tv too! The shower/bath was a little small but hardly anything to complain about.

I would say go for a superior room as we didnt have any view out of window at all really. Superior rooms have a view of the castle.

I stayed at this hotel for two nights and the staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. The on site facilities are excellent and the restaurant serves superb food. The breakfast lounge has some amazing views of the city and particularly Edinburgh Castle. I would absolutely stay here again!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a good view of the castle.

I had no conerns at staying at the Apex as I had stayed at one in London a few times and thought it was great. However the Apex International Edinburgh wasn't up to the same standard.

The common areas are lovely and very modern yet welcoming and the check in staff were very helpful. We had been sent an e-mail offering an upgrade to a superior room but found out upon check in that we weren't in time and the rooms were full. This became more disapointing as we entered our room. First impressions of the room were ok but as we put our things down we were not impressed. Hugely important to me is having a safe for our keys and documents etc which this room didn't have. I have never stayed in a hotel without a safe so I was quite shocked. I called the front desk to be told only superior rooms have a safe of which they had none available. I did complain as I thought for a 4 star hotel in the city this was a standard feature in a room. Moving on from safe-gate, the finishings in the hotel were poor. There were 2 seats in the room that were very marked and looked dirty as well as being broken and threadbare; the bed was sloped and very uncomfortable; the furnishing were tired and the bathroom had mildrew in a few places. This just wasn't what I had experienced in London.

The staff are great however and I returned before the second night of our 2 night stay to a safe in a cupboard so I was very grateful for the effort.

The pool is a nice thing to have in a central city hotel and the bar is well stocked and cosy.

The location is perfect for the castle and the royal mile also.

In conclusion, a bad room made for an ok stay. I would only book a superior if returning but I would more likely try another hotel.

Room Tip: Spend the extra on the Delux or Superior - it wasn't much and from sneaky looks on the way out o...

The rooms were nice, breakfast was really good, the swimming pool was a great extra, and the workout room was small but equipped well. The hotel is in a fantastic location, near tourist attractions, restaurants, and downtown Edinburgh. Our family of four stayed in a family room - which is a room with two two-person beds. It worked well for us.

Stayed here for one night after going to see the Lion King. Room was clean but not overly big, fine for one night though. We didn't have any issues with noise from the street, as other reviewers have mentioned, but we were there midweek so perhaps it is noisier at the weekend. Within easy reach of city centre, around 15-20 mins walk. Breakfast was delicious, plenty of choice and great value if you pre-book.

We booked the 2 day package which included the New Years eve gala ball. We upgraded to a room overlooking tbe castle. Good size with a balcony. Breakfast in The Heights restaurant was very nice even though it was very busy with a queue for tables at times. Staff were very polite and helpful. The gala ball includes a champagne reception, 5 course dinner, cellidh and disco. You are also piped out to the Grassmarket at midnight to watch the fireworks over the castle. It was a great way to see in 2014.

Room Tip: Book a room overlooking the castle
