“Great location”

Stayed for 3 nights. We had a nice room on second floor looking out over Grassmarket and Edinburgh castle. Best thing was the location which was excellent and the modern facilities, free wifi etc. Staff were all really nice and friendly but the hotel did feel a bit impersonal. We did not eat in the hotel, preferring to go out to all the interesting cafés and bistro within 5 minutes walk.
Only complaint was the shower was very inadequate and as there was not a bath it would have been nice to have a decent shower.

What a lovely hotel. Had a fab stay from start to finish. We let them know it was our anniversary and when we arrived we had a bottle of wine and a card which was a lovely touch. We had an amazing room on the 5th floor with a castle view which was amazing at night when it was all different colours. We used the pool twice which was small but nice
The only thing that let it down was the tiny communal changing room which was a nightmare when busy. The dining room had a lovely atmosphere.we had the full Scottish breakfast one day and the continental on the 2nd morning which we think was better value for the money. We loved our stay here and would highly recommend it. The room view made our stay so would request this when booking. Its worth paying a bit more for a superior room.

Stayed for our anniversary in February and the hotel even gave us a card which was a lovely gesture. The hotel is very clean and the staff are very friendly. We didn't eat here as we felt breakfast was to expensive. We were disappointed to find that friends who joined us had a better deal from Expidia than us who booked direct however, the hotel does price match prior to your stay

We stayed here in a large hen group last weekend. The location could not have been better everything was in walking distance. Our flight was delayed and we did not arrive till after 1am. The staff could not do enough to help. Reception, bar and especially the staff of the fifth floor restaurant were exceptional. The hotel itself is lovely. The room was nice but the phone didn't work when I phoned zero it just kept playing an automated message and one of the window locks was broken but the porter fixed this right away for us. Our room had a very small and poor shower head and the temperature wasnt very hot. This may have just been our room as we saw another which had a large proper shower head. There were young children in the room next to us and they cried a lot and ran around banging doors at six am. These were only small details as overall the hotel was brilliant and I would def recommend and stay again.

Here are the facts about the Apex:
Very well positioned in the Grassmarket.
Lots of nice little cafes, pubs and restaurants in the immediate vicinity, including one little cafe called 'Oink' that specialised in pulled pork rolls. The full roast pig is in the window and the fresh meat is pulled from it as required. It looked fantastic was was doing a roaring trade.
We had drinks in 'The Smallest Pub in Scotland' which had a great atmosphere and a very mixed clientele.
The previous reviews regarding the noise at night are absolutely correct however we made use of the complimentary soft ear plugs and slept soundly. The views of the castle lit up at night were worth it.
Some tips- If staying on a Saturday night, book at table if you want to eat in one of the nearby restaurants as we struggled to get a table.
If you need some bits from a supermarket, there is a Sainsburys up the road a short distance to your left from the hotel (we stocked up on Prosecco as there is a fridge in the room)
Avoid late afternoon if you want a swim as it was busy with kids. Tropicarium was nice (a cross between a sauna and a steam room)
Breakfast is 7-11 but avoid 10 at the weekend as the dining room was very busy.
Summary -well positioned hotel, reasonably priced, great views and helpful staff and we would stay again

Room Tip: If you want a view get a room at the front. If you want peace, get a room at the back.

We stayed here for my husbands 40th birthday with our 2 young daughters. Staff were very helpful and nothing was to much trouble for them. They provided a birthday cake after I sent them an email which my husband loved. Our room was a good size and overlooked the castle, there was a complimentary bottle of wine in our room which was a lovely touch. My daughters loved the swimming pool it wasn't huge but perfect for a splash about. The hotel is located in a perfect area for exploring Edinburgh. The only complaint I had was the noise from outside as we heard lots of screaming and shouting when the pubs shut and in the morning the bin lorries woke us up very early however there are earplugs provided. We have stayed in Apex hotels before but this has been the best one so far.

Room Tip: Use the earplugs provided if you have a castle view room

This hotel is nice and close to the centre of Edinburgh. This can also be a disadvantage and we were woken by revellers in the middle of the night. The room was fine, but of note the toiletries were not changed or replenished during the 3 days of our stay = disappointing!
